Great video as always! Having used the katana for several rehersals I was really surprised with how good the clean tone was, the ability to change the wattage also seemed very useful for home practice. I'm currently thinking of saving for a vox, as I personally love the jangly tone. Keep up the great work, the distortion tones were killer as always!
the clean on the Katana is just AMAZING!!! vox amps are pretty sweet, i used to have the ac-15vr (which was i think used in my first one or two videos on here!)
There’s just something about the JC40. Recently I plugged my acoustic 12 string into it and it sounded awesome. There is nothing that this amp can’t do
It may really be the "ultimate" amp even if just for its wide utility and reliability but it could also be just that for it's Superb sound too, and that is what I always hear: the "ultimate" guitar tone coming from the JC platform.
Nice comparison; 3 lovely amps . I Just bought the JC-22 for room experiments. It's great. The mixing of the chorus in the air is magic. The bright knob is perfect. The JC-40 sounds really amazing in this vid, what a sound ! What an amp !
I dig both amps. For all out high gain you can't beat the Katana, but I think the JC with a good fuzz box is more than adequate for most players. It's also hard to beat the quality of the built-in chorus in the JC, which was the first amp to offer this feature decades ago. For recording in the studio a JC is a very controllable amp and I'd even use it for metal. It can do everything with the right pedals. As a pedal platform I prefer it to any Fender or Marshall.
good pointers! the clean on the katana is really punching above its weight, but then again nothing can beat the jazz chorus line for me! no other amp has such an iconic effect built-in imo!
@@pedalpartners The Katana is a solid amp. It has a very good clean channel for such a high gain amp, but that's easier to achieve with solid state because of the nature of how tube distortion cascades from one channel into the next. This is why Mesa Boogies were so unique when first produced in the 70s. They had three gain stages, including the clean, that ratcheted up the gain. Solid state amps, if designed right, can do this and retain a perfect clean channel.
I'm beginning to realize, as it has finally sunk in, what a Phenomenal device the JC's truly are to this day and that only a real physically present JC in the room can totally pull of THAT Ethereal 80's-esque Majesty for the ear to enjoy fully. Maybe a great modeler plus a decent 2x cab or fairly good monitors can suffice for listening for recording purposes but I think you'll probably need the whole JC kit with Roland's speakers and astoundingly simple but Genius speaker activity to have the real deal JC experience. To think that this was done back in 1975 is very impressive but then again it was Roland that did it!
DAMN. I was thinking "Hmm, the Katana's distortion is too thick, but the JC 40's a little too thin, if only we could get like a perfect in between." and then BOOM. JC 40 with the Spires pedal was no joke THE EXACT sound I imagined! I really need a JC 40 and Spires pedal now... XD
I've got to say I am surprised by how nice the katana is, it wins the distortion pedal comparison imo. Everything else I prefer the JC-40, it just has that warmth and extra harmonics. An amazing feature of the jc-22 is the line output to record directly in daw. I imagine for the purpose of this video you would've all mic'd them with the same mic. But I bet it just sounds nicer in a recording with the line output, cause of course the 6" cones are gonna make it sound thin compared to the others. Right?
I've played with the Katana, and it seems to take distortion pedals better then most SS amps. Even in this vid, you can hear the difference. But I have not tried the JC-40 yet.
I have a Roland SB 100 from 1979 and a Roland GA from 1986. I prefer mono amps without built-in effects, but the JC-22 is the closest thing to a tiny amp version of what I'm using. I realize that effects are optional, but I like the EQ panels on my amps. I can do mono with a JC-22. The "extra features" and twin speakers wouldn't bother me, but the SB and GA resemble each other and I like them better because of my preferences. It's worth getting, but I wonder why they never reissue GA amps or SBs.
I vote for the JC 40. With Boss pedals. I’m old school. (and I used to have a JC 90 where I played it clean- but one band would have “heavy metal time” after our practices ... the JC 90 can CHUG with on-board distortion!)
As someone who owns a couple of nice valve amps I'd definitely opt for the Roland JC-22 as a clean amp for home use over the Katana. If you're only going to have one amp at home or the studio then the flexibility of the Katana is a winner.
Seeking thoughts on Roland JC 40 vs two Boss Katana 100 with stereo expand feature enabled. I am intrigued by the JC40 and have been researching greatly in the last year. I like the fact that it has a very neutral platform allowing a guitar's true colors to transmit before any amp effects doctor the tonal shaping. My question is multi-part. My set up would either be 1) guitar input split by ABY box, one going into mono input of Boss ME-80, the other going to input of Boss Katana 50, the ME80 out would go one output to new JC40 and the other to a Fender Ultra Chorus 2x12 stereo chorus. Thus making Katana 50 a dry center channel and the JC40 and Ultra making a left and right stereo from the ME80. I am keeping the Ultra so option 2) make Ultra the center via mono out from ME80 (Ultra does not have stereo input but is stereo chorus with stereo effects loop) and use two Katana 100's with stereo expand as the left and right to simulate a JC40 clean chorus effect. Would either of these be the better usage of the ME80? Is using the ME80 on the input side rather than through effects loop hindering any tonal possibilities? Basically trying to get a spacial room filling aspect with a center, left, and right and will either keep the Katana 50 and the Ultra and add a JC40 or get rid of the Katana 50 and replace with 2 Katana 100's and keep the Ultra. The Ultra is older, has a few quirks, is super loud, and simply is not a JC40 so do not want to use as the primary. It will work great to supplement a stereo setup but looking for a new condition, fresh sound and quality as the main sound source. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks for this. Would you say the stereo of the JC 20 is worth it over the bigger speaker diameter of the Katana? Torn between which to get and I can’t try them out due to covid. Great work btw!

can i aks you if the jc 22 could be good miced for doom and metal sounds? is the only one that my budget can buy beetween 22 and 40 and for my needs as the only guitar player in my bands i really need stereo setup. but i'm worried about little 6,5 speaker and they sound with distortion.
i personally sold all my tube amps and am now down to a JC40, ISP theta, a quilter tone block 201 and a sunn 2x15 cabinet. i like tube amps - sunn model t, various orange, fender, matamp, etc are incredible. but my ears decided solid state over tube.
Looking for the JC-22 vs JC-40 ideas. I like the idea of the smaller one for home and ensemble practice but getting out there on the club stage I'd need the 40. But then I'd wind up owning both and they're priced very closely. Ugh.
the jc-22 is actually capable of live playing. the 40 is very loud, the 22 only slightly less so. definitely great for smaller shows, especially if you mic up :)
@@pedalpartners Hi. The places I play at only mic the vocalists. So I have to bring my own muscle. I also play with some heavy-handed drummers which does not help my situation. Might need to buy the 40 and then use it as an end table. Thanks for reply!
Katana is what it is, very convenient and a jack of many trades but master of none. On the other hand the jcs offer an excellent clean that pairs with a great pedal platform. Still prefer clean tubes but the convenience of the Roland jc is unquestionable.
@@pedalpartners Great news, I got my Kurt Cobain Jaguar back at the same price I sold it for. I may put in a partial coil split circuit, with the switch located in the spare space by the three way toggle.

i personally sold all my tube amps and am now down to a JC40, ISP theta, a quilter tone block 201 and a sunn 2x15 cabinet. i like tube amps - sunn model t, various orange, fender, matamp, etc are incredible. but my ears decided solid state over tube.
Do you know if the jc40 would take a tube distortion well. I'm looking at that amp and a blackstar dual distortion. It has a tube in it
all our vids are recorded with a jc, we've tried all kinds of distortions so have a scroll on our page to get an idea! thanks :)
Thanks for reply!
needed this i cant decide
hope this helped! thanks for watching :)
Love your content!
thank you so much, we really appreciate the support!
Great Video!
I love the options of the katana and getting good tones out of the box, but man they JC40…I had one years ago but sold it when unemployed…Idk
the katana has a great clean tone, me being me i'd always pick the 40 but the katana is a solid option
In my opinion, the Roland JC-40 is the best.
love them all for different reasons! thanks for watching :)
Where to get patches?? Great comparison btw!
you can solder them yourself
@@drugtaker3283 you don’t say? Lol! I want to get some nice shoegaze patches but don’t know where to find them. I’m terrible at making them myself.
Wonderfull.
Thanks
thank you for watching Pablo!
For me the JC-40 was the one for the best aural pleasure.
it's a very satisfying amp!
How do you deal with the hiss from the JC amps?
Totally fine in a live context, studio just gate it. For bedroom playing, accept it haha
@@studieslessonstheoryetc141 how do you gate it?
@Luke You are so right. While playing I don’t notice it at all. But I really want to record with it which is where the problem starts....
@@whatsabryan what are you recording into? A DAW or?
@@studieslessonstheoryetc141 I would just be using garageband through my phone
Katana is what it is, very convenient and a jack of many trades but master of none. On the other hand the jcs offer an excellent clean that pairs with a great pedal platform. Still prefer clean tubes but the convenience of the Roland jc is unquestionable.
I think the Katana is a stellar amp. And the master of tone is connected to your fingers.
what microphone did you use to record em? those cleans are as clean as it gets, loved it
see patreon.com/pedalpartners for my intro to recording & check out my recording video here ruclips.net/video/U9q43c6CykY/видео.html thank you :)
I keep trying to tell the tube heads that the JC-40 takes pedals like a champ and they never listen.
Katana CLeans are modelled after JC right?
Inconclusive -- they all sound decent
I think I still have time to return my jc-40 and get the katana and save 400 bucks!
I just sold my lefty Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar, and I am regretting having done so already.
ah no, i'll never part with mine!
@@pedalpartners Great news, I got my Kurt Cobain Jaguar back at the same price I sold it for. I may put in a partial coil split circuit, with the switch located in the spare space by the three way toggle.
I literally just ordered the 22 did I make a huge mistake not just spending the extra hundred bucks for the 40 😭
the 22 is awesome, especially if you live in an apartment or don't want to carry around a huge amp!
is that tape on the trem arm? i hope its okay :'(
It's a technique done by kevin shields to get a looser vibrato to make glide guitar easier. Try it sometime!
thanks for the concern Zane, can confirm the guitar is all well! have an awesome 2021 :)
@@tea-stomach-cycle6385 that sounds cool! Il check out out. Glad the guitar is healthy new years and cheers dudes
