- Canzone Napoletana, sometimes referred to as Neapolitan song, is a generic term for a traditional form of music sung in the Neapolitan language, ordinarily for the male voice singing solo, and expressed in familiar genres such as the lover's complaint or the serenade. It consists of a large body of composed popular music-such songs as O sole mio, Torna a Surriento, Funiculì, Funiculà and others.
The Neapolitan song became a formal institution in the 1830s through the vehicle of an annual song writing competition for the yearly Festival of Piedigrotta, dedicated to the Madonna of Piedigrotta, a well-known church in the Mergellina area of Naples. The winner of the first festival was a song entitled Te voglio bene assaie; it was composed by the prominent opera composer, Gaetano Donizetti. The festival ran regularly until 1950 when it was abandoned. A subsequent Festival of Neapolitan Song on Italian state radio enjoyed some success in the 1950s but was eventually abandoned as well.
The period since 1950 has produced such songs as Malafemmena by Totò and Carmela by Sergio Bruni. Although separated by some decades from the earlier classics of this genre, they have now become "classics" in their own right.

My father was totally Calabrese and he sang this too. The songs are called "Neapolitan" because of the fair which was held in Naples to determine which song was the most popular. Pappa had a voice very much like Caruso's. But Pappa never studied voice, nor read music. So much for learning in a "conservatory"!

This is one of the few restorations that works. There is a special story about this recording. It was one of Caruso's favorite songs to sing. When he made the recording in Camden, NJ in 1919 he ended the recording by blowing a kiss into the recording horn. I always loved that thought as I listen to him here. Lovely recording that technology has made a little more palatable to younger ears...

This is one of Tosti's many great songs. Caruso sings it perfectly. This is sung in Neapolitan, not Italian.

D'Annunzio in quel periodo viveva a Napoli è accolse una schezosa sfida del poeta e amico Ferdinando Russo sfidandolo a scrivere in dialetto e così nacque questa bellissima canzone. Ricrediti sono napoletano e quasto dialetto lo parlo da una vita e non trovo niente di non napoletano nel brano!!!

D'annunzio e Tosti stavano seduti fuori al bar Gabrielius "piazza del Plebiscito di Napoli "e seduta a qualche tavolo poco distante c'era una ragazza seduta al tavolino che sorseggiava un caffe' :Gabriele D'annunzio in soli 10 minuti scisse A Vucchella il Maestro Tosti prese appunti e la musico' ! Ispirandosi a Napoli :Come Lucio Dalla ,Romagnolo scrisse "trovandosi a Sorrento" La bellissima canzone dedicata al Grande Caruso
si è vero: d'annunzio si trovava in piazza san ferdinando seduto ad un tavolino del cafè (con una effe) gambrinus con un gruppo di amici che, affettuosamente scherzando, gli facevano notare che, ormai da tanto tempo a napoli e pur avendo scritto opere anche in francese, non si era mai cimentato a scrivere in lingua napolitana (non napoletana). egli di getto su un angolo di marmo del tavolino scrisse " 'a vucchella ". in seguito tosti la musicò.

En esta version " mejorada digitalmente" la orquesta suena a muy elevado volumen, opacando la enorme voz del gran Caruso. Un pecado imperdonable.
The accompainment (sp) level needs to be turned down the voice is supposed to be equal or louder than the accompainment. It was very nice but overpowering.

Non m8 piacciono molto quelle accelerate nel tempo.
Sarà questione di sensibilità personale,bisogna vedere come è stata scritta.
Nel passato spesso adattavano il pezzo al cantante , o ad altre esigenze .
Si all' interpretazione no allo stravolgimento del testo.

Immenso Caruso, ma questa canzone è interpretata in maniera ancor più sublime da Tito Schipa:
Schipa indubbiamente ci fornisce una interpretazione di livello ma, a mio giudizio, tende al patetico e, quanto a voce, non regge il confronto con Caruso, il quale non aveva, peraltro, i supporti della tecnologia, che al tempo di Schipa erano già importanti. Anch'io, tuttavia sono un grande estimatore di Schipa, ma Caruso è l'essenza e la divinità del canto. Stefano Mangione.

Do some research into the number of tenors just before Pavarotti or Domingo came on the scene and you will be amazed. DiStefano, Bjorling, Corelli, DelMonaco, Bergonzi, Wunderlich... AND they could sing without a mike.
