Trust me. He was a mere mortal. I know because I was in the same room with him at one of the clinics he would offer for free when he was in town. He spoke to ME. Listened to ME. Maynard oh my Lord Ferguson. The most inspirational afternoon of my life. Yes...there will never be anyone like him. Thanks for posting.
@@Gennettor-nc8kxi think his tone is quite fitting tbh. sure he’s overblowing but he’s doing so on purpose as part of the loud in your face style theyre going for. you also dont give those high notes enough credit, incredible tone for how high they are. although i totally agree with you on rocky: he could have been far more stylistic and light and obviously not so showy with his range. i guess my point is that hes a pretty good trumpet player
I still listen to the Boss on a regular basis. He was one of the nicest guys you could meet with an infectious smile and just upbeat. He is truly missed by us trumpet Geeks. Till this day many try to copy him and his playing but there will only ever be one Maynard!
Maynard was great and gave a lot of young people their start - Plus he was such a nice person, I saw him many times in concert and met him with my kids. He couldn’t have been nicer explaining technique to my son - a great guy that is missed. 🙏👏
Hi, I bought the Seattle DVD and had trouble watching it more than once, due to the end of Rocky. I'm sure there were many high school auditoriums all over Flyoverland where MF nailed the last note, then he misses it here. If I had only known what was coming with RUclips, I would not have spent money on the DVDs, "At the Top" and Seattle. MF is playing Rocky as I'm typing this and I put it on mute, sorry sorry. But I always loved MF.
He plays the B, I hear it. But I got bat ears. I only hope at that age after a long demanding set, I can still play any notes at all on the last chart. lol What a freaking BOSS!!
Dogs can hear it! Look up his appearance on the Mike Douglas show and Conquistador! The last note is the absolute highest note I've ever heard on the trumpet.
I like how they did that double time groove with the piano solo. Appropriate for his later years and a nice adaption of the more rock version of the '70's. Piano player started to hint at wanting to put some substitute chords to take it somewhere else but kept it safe. I would have had somebody re-write the entire arrangement with this feel and some cooler harmonics but his fans wanted to hear the ole Rocky.
I got to see him as a kid when he played a show with the band my dad was in... beaver bop cats i believe or it was trinity jazz i cant quite remember .... but it was awesome to see such a legend
What is there not to love of this legendary trumpet virtuoso ? Though in later years of his long career he was still trying to top that one last note he never failed to deliver the big band sound for us to enjoy in awh and wonder how does one human hit those high screeching notes ? Blessed talent years of practice and rehearsal , finding the best pic-up band members dedicate to the art of music and their instrument of choice .
I see Adolfo Acosta currently lead trumpet with Tower of Power playing 2nd chair. I think Mike Bogart might have been there a year or two earlier. I love them all.
Such a great player. Fun to know you played with him. I got to sing with him. Good guy too. What was that electronic instrument he played. quieter or something like that.
that right there the ending.....he ain't got it no more. I get one gets old, but that little peep at the end, proves he should've retired years ago before his death
Very high and technical - but an ugly tone. And musical? No, not really; an un-oiled hinge of one of the doors in my house makes exactly the same noise. Give me Bix or Louis any day.
Got earplugs?
If you think you need earplugs with Maynard, go see a live performance from "Here Come The Mummies!" You can see them on RUclips, the Bob N Tom show.
@@keithchrysler3732 I wouldn't see a ferguson live performance for free.
Jerk..

I did trumpet clinic in '75 and I get what you're saying.
I don't think it's all that good actually. Sure, high notes and very technical but a good tone? No. Musical? No, not really. Give me Bix any day.

Yeah. But the difference in me and you is you were in one of his clinics. Very good.
I played with HIM in the 80s
I was lucky to have seen Maynard in concert 5 times, did trumpet clinic and had lunch with him! Incredible talent!

Fantastic and iconic contemporary Big Band.

He didn’t miss the last note. He just played so high we can’t hear it

Jeff Rupert if you read this you burned everybody's butt with that awesome tenor solo. Love ya man.
Wow! That tenor sax solo!
fr i loved it
I'm just here for the drummer, absolutely crisp!!

I saw Maynard at Sonoma State in the 70’s with my Slater Junior High music teacher. I was mesmerized. This was equally fantastic.
Means you must be in your 90 now..
One thing that was always for certain at an MF show…he would leave it all out on the stage!!
I miss him

good eye.
Good stuff, Maynard
First glimpse at the thumbnail, and I thought that was Dusty Rhodes!!!!
The whole band are great players there's only one way you get there practice practice 😊
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to make a move about my life, but if they ever do by mistake, 98% of the soundtrack will Maynard’s stuff.
Loved Him!!!!
Нет слов!!!! БРАВО!!!
Damn they are so tight!!!!
Adolfo is nails on lead trumpet!
Great !!!! Got so many of his records !!! Am I crazy, but the middle top row trumpet player sure looks like the guy playing with Tower of Power ???
It is the guy who plays with Tower of Power, Adolfo Acosta.
@@johnfuller8284 Thanks ! Was not sure !!
Maynard at Concerts would but the echo on and say his name because it sounded cooler than Maynard Ferguson
He was right before Patrick Hession
I see Adolpho Acosta up there in the trumpet section!
That was fantastic.
Don't bust a vessel dude. Trying to hit the highest note possible isn't what music is about. Love man.
That’s what he does , duh !
Such a great player. Fun to know you played with him. I got to sing with him. Good guy too. What was that electronic instrument he played. quieter or something like that.
did anyone recognize aldolfo costa of Tower of Power in he trumpet section?
so cool
Alguien se ha fijado en el bajista?? Porque es brutal
Stars🎉🎉🎉🚀👑🥂
Frank Abrahamson trumpet 🎺 section
Alto player is Mike Dubaniewicz.
whos the drummer? rhythm section on point.
He needs a new clef for all those ledger lines he’s playing above the staff.
Pog
you can tell this is definitely when he's getting old and cant play as well
:D :D LOL
But even in his very old years he’s still better than 99 percent of jazz trumpet players will ever be.
probably because of embrochure change
About half a dozen jelly rolls from death.
Tenor player might be Jeff Rupert
2:09
Personnel?
bet
I can't tell whether he looks more like Donald Trump or Jackie Gleason.
Am I the only one commenting
DanB Juliano yes i suppose so
Indeed
Unpopular opinion. Maynard isn't even good(even in his prime)
@@masonchappell7936 He's good it's just his playing style is wack
balin apparently he’s never heard Maynards recording of Birdland
1:05 Does anyone know the name of this sax player?
that right there the ending.....he ain't got it no more. I get one gets old, but that little peep at the end, proves he should've retired years ago before his death
Poor guy looks like he's going to burst an artery.
Meh
音が何かよれってる。もう少し痩せた方が良いよな。
エリック氏の方が遥かにレベルが高い。
高音出し終わった後のリアクション、笑っちゃう😂

This reminds me a lot of his version of Dayride from Chick Corea.
