The problem is this completely flies in the face of the Joker and his motivations at least in most iterations of the character. Yes, the Joker is the "clown prince of crime" but he doesn't commit crimes for financial gain so much as he enjoys being an agent of chaos. You can squeeze out greatness out of him with good writing and direction, but I don't think he's amazing on his own like Joaquin, Bale, etc... His ego is just on a ridiculous level and once he's given a form of creative freedom he shits the bed by thinking he's above everyone
The "gifts were an idiotic attempt to create buzz about how committed he was. From day one I thought it was the cheapest lamest act I had ever heard of. That said Leto is usually an ok actor.

Heath Ledger was kind and nice to his colleagues, while Leto sent condoms and dead rats to Margot and his colleagues. Their actions tell a lot about their personality.
Ledger and Phoenix absolutely nailed the role. I have a hard time choosing between the two, both so visceral. Leto was like a soggy fart that might have been a shart
Both actors were almost the same Joker, only at different points in his life. Either actor could have done justice to the other joker movie (hope that makes sense). To be fair though, although Leto wasn't great, a lot it was likely directing and writing flops to blame as well.
It does seem kinda like that. Batfleck is clearly older than this version of the Joker, so maybe it's a title of sorts, and this is just the new kid taking the mantle. Personally I was kind of hoping the o.g. Joker would have been Willem Dafoe, that guy can Joker. But alas he already has a different role in the DCEU.
Luis Carlos Tabian I choose to blame both. The screenwriting is not in an actor’s full control, but he definitely had input on it. I mean, the movie was a train wreck to begin with, without Leto’s beyond cringeworthy performance, so I guess most of the blame would lie on the director.

He actually played an unhealthy ENTP type, sure the others had fancier acting portrayals, but they weren't actually playing an ENTP, the fact that people saw Leto as a joke means he actually succeeded honestly. No one likes the Joker, people see him as a Joke person, a fancy can't get their hair out of place person, and then they get caught off guard at his hidden strength when they've triggered him. Heath and Jacquinn just made the character seem grunge and likable, but it wasn't a real joker.

I think it was an interesting idea to try to turn the Joker into basically like a trap-style hip hop artist, who loves basically being a pimp, objectifying women and of course also enjoys the allure of making money. The problem is this completely flies in the face of the Joker and his motivations at least in most iterations of the character.
