I think so, too. I really like the look and the aesthetics of Leto's Joker, his voice and mimic is great. But.... something is wrong with the performance. Couldnt point my finger on it until I read your comment. 😅 Maybe Leto could not play "crazy" like Phoenix, because he lacks the emotional depth to understand a "crazy" mind. So he went over the top with it and...failed.

But a one word response is not who the Joker was though, he's an overly chatty miscreant that isn't really mentally ill, but messes with people because he's npd, meaning has an over glorified sense of self importance, even when he's clearly acting an idiot. Every time I see Leto acting it is just glaringly obvious that there is no real emotion behind it and that there is nothing of himself in the role. It just feels like a flat parody without any depth.

I remember finishing this movie the first time and kind of liking Leto's portrayal. In hindsight, I don't know wtf I was thinking and I was probably drinking too much at the time. I think I really, really wanted to like this version of the Joker. It was a different take on an iconic character we had seen multiple variations of and I thought a new take would be a breath of fresh air Sometimes when I really want something to be good it can delude my opinion in a positive or negative fashion

I think it was an interesting idea to try to turn the Joker into basically like a trap-style hip hop artist, who loves basically being a pimp, objectifying women and of course also enjoys the allure of making money. The problem is this completely flies in the face of the Joker and his motivations at least in most iterations of the character. Yes, the Joker is the "clown prince of crime" but he doesn't commit crimes for financial gain so much as he enjoys being an agent of chaos. Heath Ledger's Joker literally burned a pile of crime money in front of gangsters who called him insane for doing so -- the idea he'd be driving around in a Lamborghini that's suped with underglow out is laughably ridiculous.

I haven't seen Suicide Squad but i see from this video that the Leto Joker wasnt good. But saying what you just said is a huge underestimate. He did a phenomenal job in requiem for a dream, Mr. Nobody and Texas buyers club. The commitment he takes to make the role work is unbelievable. He gained loads of weight for Chapter 27, he lost loads of weight for Texas Buyers Club to play a transvestite with AIDS. Moreover, Joker is a very difficult role to play. There have been quite a few actors playing this role, and every one of them obviously wants to make it unique, and you can only do so much playing the same character . Its just that kind of a role, so bashing on someone for not doing a great joker is kinda crazy. And if i got the right idea from the comment section the movie itself wasn't that great, so maybe in a different script he would do much better, who knows.
I also think Ledgers death played a HUGE part in immortalizing that role. Imagine he didnt die. Would he have won the oscar? Probably. I dont think the role would be that legendary though. It's like Kurt Cobain dying. It elevated him to this pantheon of greatness

I think it was an interesting idea to try to turn the Joker into basically like a trap-style hip hop artist, who loves basically being a pimp, objectifying women and of course also enjoys the allure of making money. The problem is this completely flies in the face of the Joker and his motivations at least in most iterations of the character. Yes, the Joker is the "clown prince of crime" but he doesn't commit crimes for financial gain so much as he enjoys being an agent of chaos. Heath Ledger's Joker literally burned a pile of crime money in front of gangsters who called him insane for doing so -- the idea he'd be driving around in a Lamborghini that's suped with underglow out is laughably ridiculous.

Edit: now that I think about it, he is arguably the best looking actor for the Joker, if they made his design more niche, like a suit and made him less edgy he might have been "the Joker" for the female audience.

Joker is in my top 10 movies of all time without a doubt. Absolutely iconic. The blood smile scene STILL gives me shivers.
Both actors were almost the same Joker, only at different points in his life. Either actor could have done justice to the other joker movie (hope that makes sense). To be fair though, although Leto wasn't great, a lot it was likely directing and writing flops to blame as well.

While i agree with you i don't think the blame should be put all on Jared Leto, he has his lines and directors told him how to act. Of course he still did all of these things but he did them because he thought that it matched what he was told this character should be.

The best acting JL’s ever done was dying in Panic Room and getting his ass beat in Fight Club. Plus side - he doesn’t seem to age and is (allegedly) well endowed.
I haven't seen Suicide Squad but i see from this video that the Leto Joker wasnt good. But saying what you just said is a huge underestimate. He did a phenomenal job in requiem for a dream, Mr. Nobody and Texas buyers club. The commitment he takes to make the role work is unbelievable. He gained loads of weight for Chapter 27, he lost loads of weight for Texas Buyers Club to play a transvestite with AIDS. Moreover, Joker is a very difficult role to play. There have been quite a few actors playing this role, and every one of them obviously wants to make it unique, and you can only do so much playing the same character . Its just that kind of a role, so bashing on someone for not doing a great joker is kinda crazy. And if i got the right idea from the comment section the movie itself wasn't that great, so maybe in a different script he would do much better, who knows.

I also think Ledgers death played a HUGE part in immortalizing that role. Imagine he didnt die. Would he have won the oscar? Probably. I dont think the role would be that legendary though. It's like Kurt Cobain dying. It elevated him to this pantheon of greatness
