    The goal of this TAS is to complete the PAL version of Super Mario Bros. as fast as possible. PAL is quite different to NTSC, as in the PAL version Mario moves faster, jumps higher, falls faster, and accelerates/decelerates much faster than in its NTSC counterpart. This makes things such as FFPG from pole inputs, a 132 xpos block clip in 4-2, the floor clip in 1-2, and the ceiling clip in 8-4 possible.

    As a casual observer of the smb speedrunning community I’m confused how I am only finding out about this TAS now. Why is this not considered THE smb TAS? For years everybody has been telling me 4:54 is the limit and even in TAS in the last 10 years only one frame has been saved, meanwhile nobody is willing to mention that the limit is multiple seconds lower on PAL. You deserve more recognition for this TAS!

      honestly the main reason is that people just don't really care about the pal version LOL even i'm guilty of that, i don't have an actual pb for the pal categories

    Fun watching what is theoretically possible if all limits are removed, of course a human player could never hit this time, but the top speedrunners are doing amazing things.

      great way of putting it, yeah! i think it's really fun seeing all the things tas can do in games, even if it isn't anything a human player will necessarily ever be able to do

      I wouldn't put it past them. I think that the double fast acceleration was thought to be a TAS only trick too, but look at where we are now. I have a feeling that we've still got some things in the game to discover and pull off, especially with what we've discovered about the PAL version in the fact that PAL might actually be faster with the tricks we discovered in that version. Who knows?, may e someday we'll get a sub 4:50. You never know.

      mmmmm that's hard to say, but like. in terms of tasing they're both pretty much equal, but in terms of actually playing the game i like ntsc better, so overall ntsc is a bit better imo. pal is still cool though

    So which version has the theoretically fastest time? PAL or NTSC? Which one would be faster for the TAS? Which one would be faster for a human?

      pal is faster for both. the only reason it isn't used in rta is because the pole inputs required to get ffpg are insanely difficult to do even 1 time (you need to do l, r, l+a, r), and the only reason it isn't on tasvideos is because it's a different game version than the one in happylee's tas and so can't obsolete it, but there aren't enough obvious differences to warrant an entirely separate branch.

      yes, it's done to push mario 20 pixels farther to the right on the screen, which is the minimum needed to make the wrong warp possible later in the level.

      technically yes, the no l+r tas is a low 4:52 i believe. however as i've said before the pole inputs required for ffpg are really insane. it'd be like having to do a perfect first room in 8-4 5 times (once for every level with a flagpole)

      @@SamiSaba2 unfortunately not. 4:51 is only possible using left+right inputs, which are banned in actual speedruns. the fastest time theoretically humanly possible is a low 4:52

      ​@@electricpants8196 jump velocity (i think velocity?) Is higher so you go up higher and get higher fast, so when you do it because of the increased velocity your lower in the block and instead trigger an ffpg/full flagpole glitch

      dw that's totally fine! uhhh i explained somewhere else in the replies i think but tl;dr in nes times european games ran at 50 fps and north american/japanese games ran at 60 fps. so nintendo released a separate version of most nes games for europe so they played closer to how they did in north america/japan, which included smb1.
      in pal smb1 mario runs and falls faster, the framerule timer is slightly changed, etc etc so that the game doesn't feel really slow

      In the past, TVs and games consoles were very dependent on the electricity supply in the country they were played in.
      USA and Japan uses NTSC format, designed for 110V at 60Hz, and European and Australian games use PAL format, designed for 230V at 50Hz.
      PAL versions of games have a slower frame rate, and if games are poorly designed, will run worse on PAL (but not always).
      The different speed does allow for some special tricks in speed running.
      Apart from that, PAL releases will have more languages and other differences to NTSC, to cater for European markets.

    what's the theoretical limit on PAL without FFPG? because if it's still faster than in NTSC without FFPG then it would be reasonable for people to switch to PAL

      i dont think its very well documented, but the current world record (5:04 iirc) is certainly very close. so the only way to be faster than ntsc is with ffpg

    Also if you look at the scene in world 8-1 at Time 245 on timer he goes through the top block phasing through a hitbox which shouldn't be possible for that pillar!

      it is perfectly possible for every block in the game, i'm sure you could find plenty of other examples of that exact thing happening throughout the rest of this tas, not to mention any other tases.

      @@theretrogamer1 i mean i guess? it just takes advantage of how the game handles block collision. in the game if you're in the upper few pixels of a block while moving upwards (upper 6 pixels for pal, 5 for ntsc) the game doesn't stop mario's movement, which was designed to make corners more lenient

      to keep a really long explanation short, pal is much more lenient when it comes to being able to clip into the ground like that. it can be done in the ntsc version as well (check out happylee's channel for an example of that) but it is extremely precise

      the game is unmodified, it's just the pal version. on top of that this isn't a speedrun in the first place, it's a tool assisted speedrun. i'm not claiming it should go on any official leaderboard

    in my nestopia, if i switch to PAL the framerate changes from 60 to 50. and the game, music is slower. how can i simulate this run?

      the version he's talking about there is the ntsc version, whereas this is pal, but the concept is still the same for the 4-2 wrong warp

    What does “PAL” mean?

      technically pal stands for phase alternating line. but basically a lot of europe/asia/oceania has their electric grids running at 50 hz instead of 60 hz like north america/japan. which means games made in japan would run at 5/6 normal speed when played in those regions, so to "fix" that, a separate version of smb1 was made for those 50 hz regions that let it play rouuughly the same as the normal ntsc/60hz version

    What’s makes the full flagpole glitches possible on PAL? What change in Mario’s physics between the two versions allows it to happen? I understand just a small change in jump height allows it to happen, and is that this?

      i would assume so? honestly i don't really know why it's possible on pal, all i know is that it is

      Due to the fact that PAL uses 50hz AC frequency, the game effectively runs as 5/6th speed. Therefore, so make the game not feel "slow" physics values must be changed in order to compensate for the slower speed. For some values, such as Mario's walking, they can be adjusted perfectly. However jumping physics are not exactly the same as on NTSC SMB1, therefore using a specific setup it is possible to grab the flag lower than is possible in NTSC, allowing for FFPG.

      @@theretrogamer1 basically because pal runs at 50 fps, game physics had to be altered to roughly match those seen in the ntsc version. the music was sped up slightly too much, while the sound effects weren't sped up enough, which is why the music sounds higher pitched and is faster, while the sound effects are lower pitched and more drawn out
