Honestly, I much prefer DK having a rotating villain cast compared to how it was always the Kremlings on the snes. Only so many designs you can have for crocodiles as evident by barrel blast. Also, kinda surprised you didn't mention Mario strikers battle league when talking about Nintendo trying to remove the kremlings from existence. That was a pretty big thing when the game was shown off.
I dont mind there being other baddies in the series but DK64 was the last time the Kremlings where the main baddies in a main DK game so it's time for them to come back around. I wanted to keep this video focused on the DK series so didn't go into appearances outside of it but yea it's lame how the kritters were removed.
@JoeTony1995 I wish bowser was not used the main villian almost every time. So i also did not like kung k rool being as ghe main villian again after the 2nd game give us new villains instead of the same one. Also he said he wanted a different villian not minions.
I agree, reusing the Kremlings ad nauseam would actually be less faithful to the SNES trilogy, Yeah, the Kremlings were always the bad guys but from game to game they had new themes with new enemy types.
i would love for k rool to return (as a new persona of course) but we need an enemy group different from the kremlings. i think the best way to bring back k rool would be to have him lead a group of reptiles (not just crocodiles) to give room for more creative freedom in enemy design. i was thinking that a wild west theme with cowboy reptiles would be a wonderful setting and theme for a third retro studios DKC game. have the different worlds be based on north american frontier biomes and have turtles, snakes, lizards, and crocodilians be the baddies.
The kremlins were a parody of the gremlins, a movie from 90s. Rare used to make a lot of jokes refering to movies and popular culture in almost every game. The final boss in dkc3 is in frankenstein, for example. I love the original trilogy but i understand the decision of making new enemies.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with liking the Tikis and to be fair, someone who grew up playing Returns over the classic games will more than likely prefer the Tikis over the Kremlings, who I have a fondness for given I grew up with and love, I do feel like the Tikis are given a little too much hate due to them not being Kremlings but the Tikis absolutely had some fun and unique designs and are certainly not the worst set of baddies amongst the greater variety of villains out there in the gaming sphere.
@@DontMindJoe that’s really reassuring, thanks for that! I just really liked the little guys growing up, and I agree; they get a bit too much hate sent towards them. King K. Rool and the Kremlings unfortunately made it to where other DK baddies had to be just as good, if not better than them, and both the Tiki Tak Tribe and Snowmads weren’t able to please the fans.
I liked all of them and am glad they got some attention. I just want the Kremlings to get some much needed spotlight again outside of playing soccer. ⚽️ 😅
Wasn’t massive on Returns, but hoh boy Tropical Freeze is an absolute masterpiece. It’s one of my favourite games of all time, and in a way I’m kinda glad they left it there, since I’m really not sure that anything will ever be able to live up to it!
You may be right. Tropical Freeze surpassed Returns in so many ways including the difficulty. Seriously, I thought Returns was tough but TP ironically made its predecessor look like a joke in difficulty. It's hard to imagine the possibility of surpassing TP. On top of that, the DKC series is also known for having a theme or motif of sorts. DKC1 had the jungle theme with enemies dressed in military gear, Part 2 had an awesome pirate motif, 3 is hard to tell but I'm gonna go with mad science experiments. I wasn't fond of the tiki theme and enemies in Returns but the viking motif in the 5th game was fun. To come up with a creative theme if there's a direct sequel would be painstaking. But hey, you never know.
I'd say the Motif for 3 is nature vs. industry. The first kinda had that theme a bit with the Krem factories on the Island, but DKC3 had Khaos and all kinds of technology themes. Even Funky had a workshop. DK64 was sorta just a retelling of the 1st series and maybe elements of Land. Tikis I suppose fit the whole Bongo obsession Nintendo was coming off of. Tropical Freeze was once again a unique Motif, but the main villian felt like the General Scales of the DKC series. I think the third needs a return to the Kremlings, but with a brandnew Motif. For example they started as military. Than they were pirates. They were just regular crocs during DKC 3; a missed opportunity at a cyborg motif, and DKC64; a missed pirate motif again. Than they played soccer and started climbing to solve puzzles.😅 Anyway my point is the Kremlings are capable of change depending on how King K. Rool is feeling at the time. Nintendo should create a brand new motif spearheaded by Rool OR make another new motif of enemies; with a brand new motif, but after you defeat the new threat it's revealed King K. Rool and the Kremlings were behind it the whole time. So after the new final boss you fight a final battle with K. Rool. Than after completing the game it gets replaced with Kremlings. So basically you know how SMW replaces all the enemies and colors of the main map once you beat the whole game and complete the special zone? What if you did that with the DKC series? You could replay the whole game replacing the main enemies and boss with King K. Rool and the Kremlings. You could use the Kremling designs from 1 and 3 and maybe some musical attacks from DKC64; I always liked that. What do you guys think?
I agree. Have them working together and other Kongs getting kidnapped again like in DKC64. As you rescue a Kong they become playable. Each sub-boss from each faction has a Kong. Than at the end you can battle all 3 main bosses in one final epic showdown using the diffrent Kongs at your disposal; sorta like DKC64, but it's now a gauntlet against 3 final bosses instead of just one. Maybe have a boss rush mode to unlock after the main game so you can test your skills and try to get the best time defeating the bosses. Than you post your scores online and compete against other players. What do you think?
To be honest I find the Tikis far more interesting than the previous villains. They were finally something creative and had wonderful designs, not just any fat crocodiles. Also, good music always came up when they came up. For example during hypnosis or in the last world, where there was this ominous choral singing. They were simply something supernatural and came across as such. The hardcore fans might tear you apart for that opinion, but I love the tikis and would be happy to see them again.
There's nothing wrong with liking the Tikis, were as I love the Kremlings I'm sure there's people (like yourself) who do love the Tikis. My opinions on them sure aren't gospel. The greatest scenario for DK in the future imo, would be to use all the baddies from the series at the same time, id love to see a game where Kremlings, Tikis, Snowmads hell even the boring ass evil Kongs from Jungle Beat all comeback and are used through out a Donkey Kong World that would be amazing! Retro made some incredible games in the end and I'm so down that we'll probably never get another in the series
Maybe King K. Rool has been forming alliances with these other threats the whole time and now they work in Tangen to eliminate the Kongs once and for all in a winner take all scenario.
Oh. What if a NEW animal buddy was introduced and it was a giant penguin 🐧 you could ride on the back of, but it had ice breath 🧊 to freeze enemies in a snow ❄️ level? Than; for the lols, you could make it suspiciously look alot like King DDD and have fans speculate if he's maybe a distant relative of sorts.😅
I'm 8 months late but this video is super good!. Retro Studios 100% deserves to get their final Donkey Kong Country Game. This is going to be a super long comment but I just love the Retro Studios Dkc series!. Here is a concept for the 3rd and final game. The Kongs are all on the island when all of a sudden, a fleet of airships fly towards the island and begin attacking it. After they have attacked the island they start capturing all of the animals in giant cages hanging from chains underneath their airships. During this attack, one of the kongs (Probably Diddy) gets captured while trying to stop the invaders from kidnapping the animals. Donkey Kong and the rest of the Kongs (Maybe even 1 or 2 returning/new ones) get captured as well whilest trying to save Diddy, and all of them each end up in airships returning back to different islands (The Kong that was selected for 2 player mode would be the one who gets captured alongside Donkey Kong). The Gameplay would begin with Donkey Kong trapped in a cage being carried by an airship in the sky, and having to mash Y & X in order to break out. Once the button mashing is over, the cage would be damaged and the chain connecting it to the airship would snap, the cage would then plummet down and crash onto the first Island of the game, Donkey Kong would break out of the cage and the first level would begin. These villains are the return of the Kremlings, and they are more advanced than ever before. Ever since the events of the first 3 Dkc games, the Kremlings have evolved and become a much more advanced speices with near modern human technology. They have captured animals and multiple Kongs and have transported them all to different islands, and it is Donkey Kong's job to travel to each new Island in order to rescue all of the captured Kongs. *There would be another 6 new Islands, and they would be themed after the following environments:* World 1: Swamp - Dense and Bushy (Name: Boggy Wetlands) World 2: Carnival (Name: Kremcroc Karnival) World 3: Desert / Canyon (Name: Arid Canyons) World 4: Northen Hemisphere Themed World / Great Freshwater Lakes, Mountains, & Forests (Name: Northen Kremisphere) World 5: Medieval Castles / War & Battle Themed World (Name: Krocodile Kingdom) World 6: City Themed World (Name: Krem City) *Imagine a silhouette themed level in the city with Donkey Kong jumping from rooftop to rooftop on the very top of city buildings at night with the skyline view of Krem City at night in the backround.* Thanks for reading!.
Very nice write up! Really digging your concept for a 3rd game! I like how you managed to really touch upon the past games with the Kremlings with bringing them into a new Retro made sequel. I really love the idea of a Kremling city especially with the silhouette art style! Thanks so much for such an in depth response and I’m glad that my video inspired you to write this up and share it with me!
I LOVE your idea!!! Why have Nintendo and/or Retro Studios not hired you now? Returning to the Northern Kremisphere after almost 30 years sounds awesome! Kremling Karnival reminds me of Krazy Kremland. 😎
Dude that's PHENOMENAL! I'd play that kind of game in a heartbeat! Maybe make 2 extra islands that are tropical/beach themed with lots of underwater levels and maybe caves to explore; like DKC3, but make the caves ACTUAL levels. And the other island should be industrial like Krem Kroc Industries and Khaos' world from DKC3. You can name them. Just felt like 6 islands was too small. Maybe the extra 2 could be unlockable like the list worlds from DKC2 and DKC3. After you beat the main game you unlock them for extra game replay value. You can name the extra 2 islands. What do you think? Oh and in the industry themed one Barron K. Rooleinstein's laboratory could be there; with twisted lab experiments that; although the Barron himself I'd nowhere in sight, produces cyborg and robotic Kremlings. Perhaps the animal buddies were to be taken to this abandoned island; as well as other Kongs, to be experimented on by the mad doctor; who has been wanting revenge since his 2 defeats in DKC3. He is working entangent with K. Rool and the NEW villian of the series. However you learn that the mad Dr. is NOT responsible for the experiments and that King K. Rool stole them from him and was using it the whole time, but was going to frame the mad Dr.; since 1. He's K. Rool's cousin and 2. He failed against the Kongs 4 times; even though K. Rool has at LEAST 4 times as well that I'm aware of if you count DKL series, and Kaptain K. Rool has failed twice; since he's another cousin. Anyway FANTASTIC ideas and I hope this only added value to your concepts.
Nice it's always good when Joe uploads a video. Man, whoever make the new DKC game, i just hope we can get the spider from dkc2 back, it's my favorite animal buddy.
Actually since it's a call back to the original there's one animal buddy that gets no love. This will be a hot take, but what about Winky? Also Tropical Freeze missed the opportunity to include Clapper and Unguard, but I digress. What if we made Winky BETTER and bring him back for 1 FULL level: like Rattley got in Rattle Battle, and really make him stand out for modern times. Squaks and others can make background cameos. I'm thinking Elie can appear in a background level somewhere as a neat little nod.
I grew up playing DKCR as a kid and I loved it. I later played tropical freeze and loved that too. I really do hope we get another DK game soon since he's my fav video game character. Anyways good video! I agree they really should've brought back K rool in another game.
there actually is a reason retro has not made any more DK games its because the have been making Metroid prime 4, for the last 100 years so hopefully once that is finished we will get a new DK game.
I honestly think it won't live up to the hype and they should just scrap it. With the theme park announcement, DK in the Super Mario Bros movie, King K. Rool's inclusion in SMASH, and talks of a new DKC game, DK is at an all time high in popularity and Nintendo should do everything they can to capitalize. With all do respect to the Metroid series; believe me I love the series, but we just got Dread and a re-release of Prime to tie us over. As far as I'm concerned Dread WAS Metroid Prime 4; okay I know it's not related to Prime, but you get my point, and it's time to focus all of our energies on DK while he's at his MOST marketable. If Nintendo sleeps on this opportunity DK might not see ANOTHER "Return" for like 20 years. Samus WILL have other opportunities. Let's give DK the adulation he deserves and come out with a BANGER!
I still prefer stickerbush symphony, but it LEAD to its creation so I love it ALMOST as much. DEFINITELY a masterpiece not just for the DKC series, but the gaming industry as a whole.👍
K rool is such an underrated, underestimated, and over looked character. I honestly think he is among the most badazz villains in all of nintendo, and I am craving k rool and he needs to be back. They have done him dirty long enough, and now the king must return and reak havoc on DK island
underapreciated by Nintendo? Sure, but not underrated. The guy was so popular that he made it to Smash thanks to the Ballot. Granted K.Rool IS my favorite DKC Villain as the rest of DK's rogue's gallery. The tikis have the personality of a Goomba and the Snowmads are viking expies of the Kremlings and the villains from Jungle Beat......exist.
He should return with a brand new whacky theme. He's crazy! 🤪 King, military general, pirate, mad scientist, treasure hunter, boxer, etc. You never know WHAT exactly is up the Krazy Kroc's sleeve/scales. Maybe he could unleash cyborg Kremlings or robots perhaps. Maybe he could vaudeville or dance troop inspired; forcing the Kremlings to dress and dance like dancers.😅 There's all kinds of whacky gimmicks Nintendo could try out with the King.
Honestly i like the design of the Tikis. They feel like some ancient jungle gods worshiped by tribes in the Amazon or something. Maybe thats just me but i think they are kinda cool. However the Kremlings are cooler imo.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with liking the Tikis in the end its usually personal preference when it comes to designs and stuff... The Tikis aren't the worst things ever far from it, especially when held up to other games enemies they're certainly creative. I just prefer the Kremlings to them overall. In the end id love to see all the enemies from the series' history in a game together... Nothing would be cooler than to see a Donkey Kong World type game with different regional enemies.. Incorporating all the baddies.. DK deserves it
@@DontMindJoe yeah i actualy also prefer the Kremlings. But the the Tikis were a nice addition imo. They should definitely bring back King K. Rool in the next DK game though.
I just want retro studios to release anything. Retro hasn't released a new game in 8+ years excluding the switch port. As a big Metroid prime fan and a HUGE dkc fan, I just want a new game from my favorite studio.
I had a cousin who interned at retro. I know you are probably skeptical but relax he didn't learn of anything or tell me anything that juicy. All he said is that there was a follow up to DKCTF in the concept stage but as far as he can tell it has been scrapped. It didn't even start development and the only thing he knew is that it might have featured the return of the Kremlings and he thinks he saw like a skeletal Kremling on an art person's monitor so maybe they would have been undead Kremlings ? We are probably never getting a follow up to tropical freeze.
That's really cool! Id love to talk to him some time if that would ever be possible! Not even for channel content just for a personal interest and hear what it was like mostly because the downfall of Retro is just so weird.. Love to hear some stories about the company. So if he as ever interested in talking that would be cool! Skeletal Kremlings would have made sense considering their home island was destroyed and such, or also all the ship wrecks around DK island could have skeletal ghost pirates in their from Kremlings raids past and would have been an amazing theme to build off of. Even if they approached from the angle of K.Rool literally being dead it would have been interesting. Though there were skeletal Kremlings before, like Kackle and would have been cool to see past ones return along K.Rool in some ultimate invasion! With the franchise allegedly being in Nintendo's hands again, yea most likely not.. Which is a real shame.. I dont have the greatest confidence in them after they made that shit Jungle Beat..
@@DontMindJoe The only thing I can think of for how Skeletal kremlings would work. Is that either there cursed to come back to life or a new villain brings them back and they want the Bannana horde to bring them back to life. The Magical nature of the Banana horde is made more explicit in the retro series. I know a lot of people say that the Kremlings didn't have enough variety being as how you can only have so many crocodiles. My idea is maybe you can have other Kremling affiliates based on Reptiles. Like a snake Kremling, a geco Kremling or even Dinosaur Kremlings. I imagine a Tetradactyl Kremling that just serves as a giant Ridley reference. Each phase of his boss fight would be him dying and coming back to life just like Ridley lulz. Also some people AKA big nerds will say "what is the in universe explanation for why the Kremlings come back before ?" My response to that is the Snowmads. The Snowmads have ice powers the Kremlings are reptiles hence are cold blooded. My idea is that maybe the Snowmads actually fought the Kremlings and kept them at bay with their ice powers and with their defeat in tropical freeze the Kremlings are back. Also this could serve as an explanation for why Lord Fredrick seems to know who Donkey Kong is and what DK island looks like. He learned it from the Kremlings. Also depending on how Stupid Retro wants to go. In ordered to defeat the Kremlings maybe Donkey Kong will need the help of another ice villain from his past. I am of course talking about Eddie the Mean Old Yeti from the DKC cartoon. Remember how people theorized that Lord Fredrick was actually K Rool ? I theorized he was Eddie. Just kidding with this last paragraph obviously. I admit it's possible my cousin might have lied to me but the fact that Retro wanted to bring back K Rool in the remaster of DKCTR shows they had some interest in him and wanted to introduce him to a new audience. So this does back up what he said that they had plans for the Kremlings.
DKCTF didnt need animal buddies. The levels varied so much already and the kong powerups provided some alternatives when it came to controls. Also the way that retro designed rambi levels were more akin to mine cart and rocket barrel levels, because they were specifically designed around rambi in mind.
Also if Retro can't make a DKC game. Monster games who made the 3DS port of returns made some new levels for that game and they were pretty good as far as I remember so maybe they could make it.
I wish there was a third. I DEFINITELY see the Kremlings, animal buddies, and other Kongs all returning; especially since King K. Rool made it into SMASH and the Kremlings have spirits. Also even if Nintendo DOES do it in-house I'm not entirely sure I believe in them. No offense to the Big N, but looking at the track record RARE did all the ORIGINAL titles and RETRO Studios did the new games. Nintendo did Donkey Kong in the arcade... uh... oh they did the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series; games about.... puzzles... well there were bongo games and.... oh boy. See why Nintendo doesn't do Donkey Kong games often? I wish them luck. Oh and I feel like DK64 and the DKL games don't get enough love. I actually wouldn't mind better designed upgraded HD versions for the SWITCH or at least re-releases until we get a new one to hold us over.
Im 18 now and dkcr was my first game ever. That one time my friend and i played it on his wii when his mom was at the local grocery store. I was about 6 years old back then and since that day ive loved donkeykong country and most people will hate on me for this but the tikis are my favorite enemies out of all the games. The day i saw the smash bros trailer i thought we are getting a new game. I cried when i found out it was just a smash bros charakter trailer
The Tikis are certainly cool. They SHOULD have been in Jungle Beat. Anyway they CERTAINLY have a place, but us hard-core fans would STILL like to see them co-exist with the Kremlings to make EVERYONE happy. 😊 As loyal fans; old and new, and with the announcement of a theme park, we deserve that much! 😃🍌🍌🍌
@@AidenHilton981 unfortunately no, it seems like it’s just the 3DS version in HD… which is super disappointing. It would have been nice if they did something to make the game more a more attractive purchase.
Ik I’m 10 months late but I feel like the Tiki bosses had a really cool vibe and had some insane connections. But for tropical freeze, Ik they have the frost badge but they are just complete different animals. That my opinion to share out that’s all.
When it comes to new DKC games, there's quite a lot I miss and think should be better but I think they're good games to play, especially with friends. Some things I miss that I think should be in new DKC games should've been having the same DK island, including more Kongs and Minigames and functions for each kong besides a shop, more animal buddies, a full music gallery (returns and tropical freeze had this but some songs are cut out), and on top of that maybe different types of collectibles like the DK coins. Maybe a lost world too? Either way, I think if they have another dkc game, the most anticipated kong to return for me would be Candy Kong, and Espresso for most anticipated animal buddy. I think especially in returns it was a very missed opportunity not bringing him back, because his flight ability would have been amzing to use especially for the forest and cliff levels. Also I am hoping for the kremlings to return as well, because the kremlings are to me just a staple of the donkey kong series, and not having them isn't really a good thing. K rool and co. have appeared in spin-off titles and DK Barrel Blast but the last time they were a real antagonist was DK Jungle Climber for the DS and it's the last time both kongs and villains of the series came together, so i think these things I pointed out should be in the next game... should we get one.
At this time - I feel Retro was intended to become the dedicated studio for DK, but the Metroid situation caused complications. We may not see a third entry, but are in a more favorable position to see a new and ambitious title.
This is true, the possibility behind Nintendo EPD doing the next DK does make me wonder what we could see, especially with the rumors that it’s a young Dev team who grew up playing the country games. Really hoping we see something great, the waits been long enough
I'm someone that actually grew up on Jungle Beat rather than any of rare's titles (but i have played and enjoyed them and obviously most of the current lore and characters are their creation so always respect) an in house Nintendo made DK game is just as good a deal to me as Retro making their 3rd country if they do it in JB's vein honestly. Just gimme more Kong family, bring kremlings back, and even solidify the barrel blast originals as mainstay rivals, keep the hype fest vibe that help makes Jungle Beat so exhilarating and we got the the golden DK game right there for me personally. That being said, its indeed true Retro has made 2 of, if not just straight up Nintendo's greatest platforming games back to back so if the plan is for them to give more Kong and this long ass wait is just due to them being held up by metroid prime 4's weird development struggles, then I'm all for that too as long as they also give me more Kong family, bring back Kremlings and include the BB rivals and just do DK how they do DK lol.
I think a big issue with the Retro games aside from the lack of K Rool and the animal buddies is the lack of a recognizable identity. I feel like with time and with more games they're just gonna sorta blend in. They have created no fan favorite characters of their own or used old characters in interesting ways, the generic Island design isn't used anywhere else outside of these 2 games (Smash uses the old design and the Mario movie and the Park use a new design which will likely be used in the next game too), the gameplay's too hard for casuals to really enjoy but also not involved enough to really satisfy hardcore fans... I think my point is Retro's DK games don't commit enough to anything and so they end up being forgettable. I'd even go as far to say they're more forgettable than the NSMB series, cause while the NSMB games are bland they really commit to being bland, they know what their thing is and they commit to it.
That’s honestly a fair take and one that I never considered before! As I sit here and reflect on the games that’s a very accurate criticism of them for sure. The only real identifiable quality to the Retro titles is their reluctance to use the Kremlings and that’s about it. Had they gone on to say, make up new animal buddies, use the Kremlings and give them/K.Rool new personas and do something really new with DK isle, they would have been much more than what they are for sure. In the grand scheme of things I thinks Returns suffers the most as it’s the more generic of the two and it’s only redeeming quality is it’s difficulty if your into that. I think a lot of this has more to do with the Producer Kensuke Tanabe than anything he has a great way of making shit super generic in comparison to past titles
I've been a DKC fan since day 1, but I've gotta be honest, I was never really married to the Kremlings as the only bad guy group for the Kongs. It's why I was never bothered by DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze having entirely original enemy groups. King K. Rool in Smash did make me more appreciative of the Kremlings, but I'm still not keen on them being the ONLY enemy group for the Kongs.
@@DontMindJoe I guess I just think there are bigger problems facing the Donkey Kong franchise than not having K. Rool and the Kremlings as the bad guys. I think it's more important to get Donkey Kong out from Mario's shadow.
The current problem with Donkey Kong is a lack of brand recognition… Nintendo doesn’t help this since they like to shaft DK characters in pretty much every crossover game. Super Smash is a testament to this, Donkey Kong despite being one of the largest IPs in the 90s received zero additional characters in both Smash 64 and Melee, Brawl would see only Diddy Kong show up and like 5 remixes of Jungle Japes and then nothing until fans had to literally vote in K.Rool. Diddy being cut from Mario Party which has yet again just happened with Jamboree and being cut from Mario Kart only to be added with the latest DLC for a game that’s over a decade old. Nintendo seems to like to ignore the franchise for whatever reason and that doesn’t help. In the 90s when Rare was in charge of the series Donkey Kong was huge easily on par with Mario, this is evident enough with Magikoopa being cut in Mario Kart 64 for DK. He had made enough of an impact at that point to be given that slot. As soon as Rare left the picture Nintendo mismanaged the series and made into the mess that it is today. It all started when they decided to make Jungle Beat and cut all of the recognizable characters out of the game but DK himself, even Reggie said it would hurt the franchise and he was right. Ever since that era Donkey Kong has been on the slow decline, part of that issue is there’s no coherency with his games.. in the years since Rare he’s gone from bongo rhythm games to puzzle climbing games back to platformers and when he was finally given his platforming series back once again most of the recognizable elements from past DK games where changed/removed. Returns sold well, as it was a long awaited return to what was considered peak DK and was a big success, Tropical Freeze sold alright because it was on a failing system then when it was ported to the Switch it sold slightly better… it’s strange that people need to goad players into playing whats often considered one of the greatest platformers of all time yet Tropical Freeze seems to go under the radar, why is that? Donkey Kongs identity is a question, his coherency within his own franchise is disjointed, we had to wait until 2014 to see Dixie Kong in a mainline Donkey Kong game again her last main appearance being in Donkey Kong Country 3 in 1996… Donkey Kong has been broken down and rebuilt 3 times so far and the ramifications of that are showing with a franchise that is often overlooked and forgotten by a vast majority of the Nintendo fanbase. At this point Donkey Kong is in Mario’s shadow because Nintendo put him there by taking away everything that made his series what it is in the first place. Every Nintendo franchise has marquee characters that are staples to their games/series Mario has Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad and Bowser his arch enemy The Legend of Zelda has well.. Zelda, Link, Impa, and their arch nemesis Ganon Kirby has Meta Knight, Waddle Dee, and King DeDeDe which is his on again off again nemesis Star Fox has Fox, Falco, Slippy, Peppy and his arch nemesis Andross and most of the time Wolf Why should Donkey Kong be treated any differently? Many of those franchises have been running the same way since the 90s and have seen success one way or another Some more than others Star Fox has certainly suffered but that’s a different story. Nintendo fans love familiarity, if they wanted Mario to fight someone other than Bowser it would have happened by now but it doesn’t because people don’t care how many times he fights him they just want to see it happen again and again.. all of these franchises are familiar and stable they have characters that have long legacies and rivalries and are beloved for it. Donkey Kong doesn’t have that. It’s been ripped away from him, he doesn’t get to have his cast of recurring characters anymore, it took tropical freeze to give us back Funky and Dixie.. where’s everyone else? Swanky, Candy, Wrinkly.. every new game would introduce new Kongs into the series but we don’t have that fun tradition because Nintendo has too add back in the ones they cut. One of the things that most of these Nintendo games have in common is a main villain a character who’s made the hero’s life miserable for decades and you love to see them clash again and again. Once again that was taken away from Donkey Kong… it’s quite evident from the aforementioned Smash ballot that K.Rool hasn’t been forgotten, in fact when Returns and Tropical Freeze came out that was one of the big questions “where’s the Kremlings” it’s a big question with the amusement park too… because they’re the rightful main bad guys. Donkey Kong deserves the same treatment as his fellow Nintendo contemporaries. Nintendo thrives off of nostalgia that’s just the way it is, and Donkey Kong doesn’t look the same and that turns off some people, not everyone but some.. and it doesn’t help that his fellow Kongs once again K.Rool get very little exposure to practically none in K.Rools case outside of their own series on top of getting cut from within their own series. The thing that’s going to help Donkey Kong is a return to what people remember from when it was on top. K.Rool and the Kremlings are a part of that despite what some people may believe.
Its still a great series of games but I feel it would have been better if they kept the tag team mechanic and the animal buddies (rather than just Rambi).
Oh yea the games certainly have their flaws, the lack of animal buddies was a real problem for sure, if confounds me that Enguard never showed up in TF for some reason.. Or at the very least Retro attempting to make their own animal buddies..
Also where was clapper? Enguard fits DKC Returns, but Clapper would have been PERFECT for DKTF; especially since one of the bosses is a giant seel. It'd been perfect!
I hope you enjoyed the video thanks for checking it out! Yea Tropical Freeze is a damn good game, I will say this the Switch version is great and I'm pretty sure you can get it on sale
I would be over the moon if they did HD remakes of the 3 original games from the SNES, especially if they kept the old 3D models looking similar to their OG art style
Yea exactly! That would be amazing! Sort of like what they did with Links Awakening where they made the models look exactly like the old sprites but in 3D, unfortunately I don’t think Nintendo gives enough of a shit about DK to do that
@DontMindJoe honestly some of my favorite villains in the mario-verse, but that's probably just because I really like the Manipulation/mind control types of characters
All this time, I blame Retro for the bland villains replacing K.Rool & the Kremilings, but damn that Kensuke Tanabe! And to think, people hate him already for other reasons.
The dude is a real fucking franchise killer. His only good work was on Metroid Prime and I'm honestly shocked in hind sight that Ridley and the Space Pirates were in there considering how he clearly hates doing anything that involves using established villains or being at all creative with the established characters
I want K. Rool to come back as much as anyone, I just hate everyone saying Fredrik is a bad boss entirely because he is not K. Rool. People who mock the boss fight itself, was K. Rool's really that absurdly unique to begin with?
Well at the time yea, his boss fights in DKC1 and 2 where actually pretty unique as far as fights from that generation go. Frederik suffers from the fact that he’s in a game post Tiki Tong who a lot of fans don’t like to begin with.. then they teased him as if he was going to be K.Rool, then he’s basically a clear homage to K.Rool and his boss right takes similar beats from K.Rools past fights. In the end a lot of people just wondered why go through all of these hoops when you could have just used the Kremlings and Rool to begin with. It was just a weird situation so many people see him and the Snowmads as just Kremling wannabes. To be fair, I don’t hate the Snowmads but I do think they should have taken a more unique approach to Frederik.
@@elisabetlindgren2464 well in the end it’s all a matter of opinion, where as you like the Tikis, I like the Kremlings… whichever one is cooler is subjective, honestly in a perfect world both of them return for a big game. I’d love to see all of DKs enemies come back in one adventure so that way everyone wins
He did but I only considered the console version I personally feel like Eveline Fischer doesn't get enough recognition for her soundtrack especially considering she worked on the previous 2 games with David Wise
Normally I don’t trust leaks much either but considering Retro is working on MP4 I doubt they have much time or resources to do another game at the same time and I imagine that we will get a new DK game soon within the next couple of years
Possible for sure, we’ll see soon enough I’m pretty confident we will be getting a new DK game within the next couple of years. I’m expecting to see one in time for the DK park in Universal studios Japan which is opening in 2024 so hopefully this year or next we should get a new game and it will be interesting to see who develops it
I actually really liked the tikis, they're for sure the weakest antagonists of the series, but they're still pretty fun enemies to deal with and they got cool designs When the worst aspect of a series is still pretty good you know you got a masterpiece on your hands
I love the original Donkey Kong Country games but to me DKC 1 is my favorite in that trilogy just because DK was playable and not in the other two but anyway them not bringing back king k rool or the kremlings or even the rest of the animal buddies didn't bother me to me donkey Kong country Tropical Freeze is the best donkey Kong country game to me you get to choose who you want to go throw the game with like Diddy Kong or Cranky Kong or even Dixie Kong who should have teamed up with DK in DKC 3 since he got kidnapped in DKC 2 if he was playable in DKC 2 it would have been my favorite in the in the trilogy DKC1 makes the most sense because it's a DK game but I have to give it to Tropical Freeze as the best because you can play as anybody even Funky Kong now and if you just want to go to the game with one Kong all you have to do is turn on the number 2 controller and kill Donkey Kong and you can pretty much go through the game without him I went through the entire game with just Dixie Kong 💯💯💯
A pity Retro got bogged down in this never ending Prime 4 dev hell. I’m sure the game will be good but so many years spent one 1 lesser franchise feels like a waste.
wat do you mean what could have been. they already announced a 3rd game for the trilogy on the switch. it's been in development since 2019. takes longer than 24 hours to make a high quality video game my dude.
@@Vro789 I am aware of that. It IS only THERORY, but it WOULD be a great way to establish more lore and would be a fun call back. Even if not for the story what if Fedora Kong became a DLC inclusion; like Funky did? Also Fedora Kong doesn't Kongtinue the DK naming tradition; so I propose we change his name to "dapper" Kong. Why? He looks quite dapper and his initials would be DK. Also as a further connection to the lore what if the Jr. Initials were printed on his Fedora; indicating he IS in fact the ORIGINAL DK Jr.? Also DK III and Junior HAVE been in the same games, but it's spin offs and the Mario and Luigi series helps fill in the time travel aspect nicely anyways. What do you think? It's ONLY a theory, but could evolve into brand new lore to the series while still paying respect to Myamoto Sans and RARE's original visions?
K Rool is a simple banana stealer. thieves should be put in prison not not be given roles in video games
Agreed, but it's definitely time to bring them back. At least in some capacity
It would be so funny if they can bring back Bluster Kong and Eddie the mean old Yeti and make them official canon characters to the series.
Maybe Bluster Kong could be the new shop keep.
@Grim Weed I get it instead of Bath and Body Works
They should
Make Bluster and Leo Luster playable.
I'd laugh my 🍌🍌🍌 off!😂
I think a new DK game is inevitable, Nintendo knows there is a demand for it.
Oh yea for sure we're absolutely getting a new game
I'm interested to see what they do though. In house with Donkey Kong has never really been all that good.
i would love for k rool to return (as a new persona of course) but we need an enemy group different from the kremlings. i think the best way to bring back k rool would be to have him lead a group of reptiles (not just crocodiles) to give room for more creative freedom in enemy design. i was thinking that a wild west theme with cowboy reptiles would be a wonderful setting and theme for a third retro studios DKC game. have the different worlds be based on north american frontier biomes and have turtles, snakes, lizards, and crocodilians be the baddies.
The kremlins were a parody of the gremlins, a movie from 90s. Rare used to make a lot of jokes refering to movies and popular culture in almost every game. The final boss in dkc3 is in frankenstein, for example.
I love the original trilogy but i understand the decision of making new enemies.
They should make fun of NEWER pop culture stuff, but still keep; just update, our favorite Kroc Krew!😉
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only guy who likes the Tikis.
Yeah, they’re flawed, but they’re still cool to me.
Just as long as the next donkey kong country game has a velvet worm boss and no avian bosses, i will be very happy
I want a new donkey Kong adventure game! Or a remaster of the older ones.
Id love to see a remaster of the OGs
I'd like the land series done in HD on the switch. The unique enemies alone would be cool. Remember the tornadoes 🌪 and flying pigs?🐖 😎
If retro does make one last DKC game, I would like to see The Kremlins, the Tikis, and the Snowmads all at once to take on DK for one final show down
Nintendo direct tomorrow, who knows maybe the time is here
King K. Rool really should have been a secret boss in the Switch port of Tropical Freeze.
I’m sure Retro will make a new DKC game someday.
We all hope 🙏
Oh. What if a NEW animal buddy was introduced and it was a giant penguin 🐧 you could ride on the back of, but it had ice breath 🧊 to freeze enemies in a snow ❄️ level? Than; for the lols, you could make it suspiciously look alot like King DDD and have fans speculate if he's maybe a distant relative of sorts.😅
glad to see that nintendo is just denying k rool entry into dkc, i REALLY want to see what that secret boss fight wouldve been
Im hoping it was only to appease Sakurai's ego and that we will see him in a new game soon
I can imagine it in my head and it hurts how great it could've been
I'm 8 months late but this video is super good!.
*There would be another 6 new Islands, and they would be themed after the following environments:*
World 1: Swamp - Dense and Bushy (Name: Boggy Wetlands)
World 2: Carnival (Name: Kremcroc Karnival)
World 3: Desert / Canyon (Name: Arid Canyons)
World 4: Northen Hemisphere Themed World / Great Freshwater Lakes, Mountains, & Forests (Name: Northen Kremisphere)
World 5: Medieval Castles / War & Battle Themed World (Name: Krocodile Kingdom)
World 6: City Themed World (Name: Krem City)
*Imagine a silhouette themed level in the city with Donkey Kong jumping from rooftop to rooftop on the very top of city buildings at night with the skyline view of Krem City at night in the backround.*
Thanks for reading!.
He's K. Rool's cousin and
4:40 is the definition of 🤓
I grew up playing DKCR as a kid and I loved it.
Let's give DK the adulation he deserves and come out with a BANGER!
aquatic ambience is one of the most beautiful songs ever made, and it was for a game about an ape getting his bananas stolen
Its certainly a masterpiece, it's one of the most atmospheric songs in gaming that's for sure
Here's hoping he comes back he's my all time favorite villain
I don't know about him being underrated
@@aidenliveandreloaded2522 wdym
underapreciated by Nintendo?
Well, they did release Metroid Prime Remastered on the Switch 😎
That doesn't really count though. They need a NEW hit. Maybe try to fix Star Fox or F-Zero.
Lore of Retro's Donkey Kong Country Trilogy that should have been.... Momentum 100
😃🍌🍌🍌
Do you think they'll do anything different for returns HD when it comes out on switch? Other than the 3DS levels of course
@@AidenHilton981 unfortunately no, it seems like it’s just the 3DS version in HD… which is super disappointing. It would have been nice if they did something to make the game more a more attractive purchase.
@@DontMindJoe ah oh well. DKC returns is still one of my favorite games of all time, so I'll Still buy it just to replay it in HD haha!
Nintendo should have let Retro Studios add K. Rool into Tropical Freeze HD Remix, even if as Paid DLC to tie in with Super Smash Bros ultimate
@@jarerarebear1765 I get it, but it’s been 20 years now since they’ve been the main antagonists it’s time for them to come back
@@DontMindJoe I guess I just think there are bigger problems facing the Donkey Kong franchise than not having K. Rool and the Kremlings as the bad guys.
I think it's more important to get Donkey Kong out from Mario's shadow.
The current problem with Donkey Kong is a lack of brand recognition…
Nintendo doesn’t help this since they like to shaft DK characters in pretty much every crossover game.
Every Nintendo franchise has marquee characters that are staples to their games/series
Mario has Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad and Bowser his arch enemy
The Legend of Zelda has well.. Zelda, Link, Impa, and their arch nemesis Ganon
Kirby has Meta Knight, Waddle Dee, and King DeDeDe which is his on again off again nemesis
Star Fox has Fox, Falco, Slippy, Peppy and his arch nemesis Andross and most of the time Wolf
Why should Donkey Kong be treated any differently? Many of those franchises have been running the same way since the 90s and have seen success one way or another
Some more than others Star Fox has certainly suffered but that’s a different story.
The new dynamic with diddy kong being little more than a glorified power up was a mistake if you ask me
Its still a great series of games but I feel it would have been better if they kept the tag team mechanic and the animal buddies (rather than just Rambi).
Your content is unique. And I love it. Keep it up.
Just got this recommended, i wish i finished Tropical Freeze before my Wii U bricked, missed on such beauty...
I hope you enjoyed the video thanks for checking it out! Yea Tropical Freeze is a damn good game, I will say this the Switch version is great and I'm pretty sure you can get it on sale
Nintendo give us Donkey Kong Country N'Sane Trilogy!
I would be over the moon if they did HD remakes of the 3 original games from the SNES, especially if they kept the old 3D models looking similar to their OG art style
@@DontMindJoe The models should look like they do in the manual ot those fan remasters on RUclips.
I would die if they made that.
Yea exactly! That would be amazing! Sort of like what they did with Links Awakening where they made the models look exactly like the old sprites but in 3D, unfortunately I don’t think Nintendo gives enough of a shit about DK to do that
Perhaps the reason why a new retro donkey kong game is taking too long is because of retro trying to make metroid prime 4
Just scrap it already. We got Dread and Prime to tie us over.
Hot take: The Tiki Taks are good villains
I think they have their merits that’s for sure, I definitely think people over hate them
@DontMindJoe honestly some of my favorite villains in the mario-verse, but that's probably just because I really like the Manipulation/mind control types of characters
@@DontMindJoe I know that he ruined Paper Mario. I wonder what other franchises he ruined.
Ain’t that the fucking truth
I think that the tikis are more cool than the kremlings and i think that the kremlings should not return in the next dkc game
David Wise composed for the GBA version of DKC3 with a(n) original soundtrack.
He did but I only considered the console version I personally feel like Eveline Fischer doesn't get enough recognition for her soundtrack especially considering she worked on the previous 2 games with David Wise
@@DontMindJoe She composed a few tracks for the first game and David was the only one who composed for the second game.
Ah yea your right she didn't do DK2... either way though she's great at making atmospheric tracks and i do enjoy what shes done
@@DontMindJoeI agree 👍
Loved your video!
Thank you so much im glad you enjoyed it!
There were LESS levels in Tropical freeze, not more. About 12 less levels, IIRC. And very few rocket and minecart levels, which sucked.
I still think retro could make the next one…
I never trust leaks
Normally I don’t trust leaks much either but considering Retro is working on MP4 I doubt they have much time or resources to do another game at the same time and I imagine that we will get a new DK game soon within the next couple of years
@@DontMindJoe maybe they finished it already and are waiting to release it
Nintendo did that for 25 years on EB beginnings
Possible for sure, we’ll see soon enough I’m pretty confident we will be getting a new DK game within the next couple of years. I’m expecting to see one in time for the DK park in Universal studios Japan which is opening in 2024 so hopefully this year or next we should get a new game and it will be interesting to see who develops it
@@DontMindJoe also freakin bluster kong is in the Mario movie
I’m hype
I actually really liked the tikis, they're for sure the weakest antagonists of the series, but they're still pretty fun enemies to deal with and they got cool designs
When the worst aspect of a series is still pretty good you know you got a masterpiece on your hands
Fun. Bring the kremlins back
I couldn’t agree more
I love the original Donkey Kong Country games but to me DKC 1 is my favorite in that trilogy just because DK was playable and not in the other two but anyway them not bringing back king k rool or the kremlings or even the rest of the animal buddies didn't bother me to me donkey Kong country Tropical Freeze is the best donkey Kong country game to me you get to choose who you want to go throw the game with like Diddy Kong or Cranky Kong or even Dixie Kong who should have teamed up with DK in DKC 3 since he got kidnapped in DKC 2 if he was playable in DKC 2 it would have been my favorite in the in the trilogy DKC1 makes the most sense because it's a DK game but I have to give it to Tropical Freeze as the best because you can play as anybody even Funky Kong now and if you just want to go to the game with one Kong all you have to do is turn on the number 2 controller and kill Donkey Kong and you can pretty much go through the game without him I went through the entire game with just Dixie Kong 💯💯💯
A pity Retro got bogged down in this never ending Prime 4 dev hell. I’m sure the game will be good but so many years spent one 1 lesser franchise feels like a waste.
Retro's take on Donkey Kong is more shallower than the New Super Brothers series.
wat do you mean what could have been. they already announced a 3rd game for the trilogy on the switch. it's been in development since 2019. takes longer than 24 hours to make a high quality video game my dude.
I hope your joking 😂
Trilogy? Retro studio did 2 DK games. Not 3
@@nontalkativeguy3606 no shit. The video is titled “the greatest trilogy we didn’t get” as in they didn’t make a trilogy unfortunately…..
I want redneck kong to appear.
Who doesn’t
😂
How about DLC of Fedora Kong? We FINALLY see DK'S Daddy; the ORIGINAL DK Junior, in action!😉
@@Nick-up5wv There's no evidence that fedora kong and dk jr are the same, especially since dk the 3rd and dk jr have been in that same game before.
