I used a roller tbi block and 062 heads with flat tops now can you please tell me what cam (roller) ( just the cam cause I had the tbi motor) to run for Maximum power if you have a proven setup thanks.
90 blocks have roller cams with hydraulic lifters I believe. Vortec heads came factory with flat tappet lifters. Did u have to have the vortec heads machined to accept the hydraulic lifters? Or did u just measure clearance and shim them
This is an old comment, but I want to respond for the next person in the comments anyway. V8 Vortecs were on 1996+ trucks and had roller cams. Vortec heads are essentially cloned from the 1993+ aluminum LT1 heads (used in passenger cars like the Camaro), except with regular coolant flow instead of the LT1's reverse flow. The LT1's also all used roller cams. Prior to the Vortecs, 1987-1995 TBI engines used flat tappets. Most 87-94 (and some 1995) TBI blocks had provisions for the roller lifter spider and camshaft retainer plate, so they can usually be converted, but they rolled out of the factory with flat tappet. I've seen some of these blocks have the spider bosses in the valley and casting for the retainer plate, but the bolt holes weren't drilled and tapped. My own 1989 block had some core shift on the spider bosses, but the spider was still able to mount in an effective position. I've also seen pics of a block that had core shift on the retainer plate casting, so indications are that some of the blocks used for TBI maybe have been used for it because the roller provision machining wasn't up to par. For whatever reason though, all TBI had factory flat tappet.
C'mon man. Share with the masses. I have a 96 Cheyenne that has a 305 in it. I recently bought a 350 that came out of a 91 c1500. The guy also had some 906 vortec heads. I bought everything for 275. I'm on here looking for advice and inspiration. Never built a motor before but I'm hoping to get about 400hp out of this thing. Let me know some specs or what I should do to make a nice little street machine
@@kennethheadden2229 The 906 heads are good. I'm using the factory LT4 Hot cam and the matching springs. You can use plain screw in studs and self-aligning 1.6 roller rockers. I will try to post part numbers later today.
good video I wasn't bored I can listen to engine building videos for a long time. I appreciate you trying to share some knowledge.
They sure did turn out real nice 👍
Keep up the good work. You’re really making good progress.
Motor coming along nice! Ole truck ought to run pretty good!
Lookin good!
Very informative!!
so how did it run? how did fuel management system react to the mechanical changes?
Did you have to rebalance rotating assembly after new pistons
Was that Indian head you used to seal the bolts? Have a good weekend
What's the cam specs??
Why the sealer on the bolts?
I see you use a speed handle like I do, they are a handy tool many don't use These days.
old school cordless

I am running a GM LT4 hot roller cam.
@@delrayjyd9676 exactly what I was going to say I actually have on in the box I was going to use the Ls6 springs
The melling 22280 cam is very similar to the lt4 hot cam but much cheaper.

So this is a newer vortec head late 90s onearly tbi block? What headgaskets you use will tbi intake fit vortec heads?
No they have a different bolt pattern. That's the same problem I ran into with 97 vortec heads onto a 91 tbi block
Also a much taller port than a tbi intake
No you'll have to buy the intake for vortec heads and let me tell you they are pricey lol like 350 dollars pricey
Gone up that much? I had a performer rpm for them back in 2012 they were bout 200. Over 300 now? Tf
@@darinr9424 yes they are 300 some are more depending on style or what you get
What year is the head gaskets?
The head gaskets are for 96-98 Chevrolet truck.
What of I'm doing a swapp from throttle body heads to vortec what head gaskets will work? Motor has a big cam to
What the part list ur using?
It's all in my head

Kenneth Headden put the 305 heads on the 350 and see a big difference

Kenneth Headden i got a 93 cheyenne swapped with a 350 vortec from a 97
