Since sis was vegan, I talked to her about doing a vegetarian diet, so she started making vegan and vegetarian food at home (sometimes using eggs from a neighbor when available), and Bella LOVED it! So did her other dog. They went crazy when she was making their food. Both of the dogs thrived on her homemade veg dog food and treats, which was great for the humans as well since we were all vegan. But Warning to those with cats: Unless you are keeping strict tabs on how often your cat urinates, and checking the color of your cat’s urine (the stones can cause it to become tinged with blood), then you probably won’t notice the signs of these problems until too late. Urinary problems are very painful for your cat. With male cats, urinary stones and crystals can actually block the urethra and prevent urination, leading to death. The funny thing for me is witnessing the parallels between the critics of each of these two positions I hold. People have been telling me that I was going to die if I did not eat animal flesh for decades. And for DECADES people have been telling me that my animal companions were going to die if I did not feed them flesh. The self-assured ignorance of these people in each instance is astonishing and relentless and in each case, the positive evidence supporting the healthfulness of each position piles on year after year. Sadly, some people, and even some "vegans" are so emotionally invested in their own positions that no amount of evidence will ever sway them.

      The video is about animal ethics, not health addressing the problems of raising & taking the lives of 100+ other animals just to feed your one, & the environmental impacts of that. An average dog eats as much meat as an average European human &, therefore, has as much impact on the eenvironment & other species. Changing to a vegan formula can reduce that to a fraction.

    • @lightningpower927
      @lightningpower927 Месяц назад

      @@jonahwhale9047 Thanks for your reply, but I disagree. Dogs are natural omnivores, and my dogs' health drastically improved after switching from kibble to a meat-based diet. Their well-being is my top priority. While some dogs may thrive on a vegan diet, there are potential risks, including nutritional deficiencies. Dogs need essential nutrients like taurine, vitamin B12, and high-quality protein that are primarily found in animal products. Vegan diets don't provide these without careful supplementation, and deficiencies can lead to serious health issues. Moreover, not all dogs respond well to vegan diets. Some may experience digestive issues, and it can be challenging to ensure the food is palatable and meets their energy needs. Regarding climate change, global warming is a natural process the Earth undergoes every 30-40 years. The notion that eating meat significantly contributes to global warming is misleading. The environmental impact of meat consumption is often exaggerated and should not be used to justify forcing dogs to go vegan. We wouldn't expect a lion to stop eating gazelles or a shark to avoid fish, so why should my dogs abandon their natural diet?Addressing climate change requires comprehensive solutions, not just altering pet diets. I appreciate the conversation, but my focus remains on what keeps my pets healthy and happy.

    • @jonahwhale9047
      @jonahwhale9047 Месяц назад +1

      @@lightningpower927 But dogs are "natural" at all, so a naturalistic fallacy doesn't work. If you want a "natural" dog, try living with a hyena, wolf or African wild dog. Just remember, you're part of their natural diet too. There's no such thing as "high-quality protein". Proteins are just proteins & neither we, nor they, actually need them. What we need are the amino acids they provide.
      Taurine is not considered an essential amino acid for dogs, but commercial dog foods are also fortified with it. B12 does not come animal sources, it comes from bacteria, even in animals (it's fermented by bacterian in their warm feces).
      The rest, including the climate crises denial, is just typical copy & paste carnivore/paleo arguments ... &, quite frankly, brainless when it comes to the problem of pets.
      Why? Think it through ... if everyone has a cat or dog, it is equivalent to doubling the human population. Double the population, double the pollution. Cut the pollution from pet food, or indeed owning pets full stop, means cutting the amount of pollution an equivalent amount.
      There's no arguing agains that.
      You're really just looking for excuse for YOU to carrying on eating meat, by making up stories & defending your dog's right to do so.

      @@jonahwhale9047 While dogs are domesticated, they are biologically evolved as omnivores with a natural inclination toward meat. Their digestive systems are designed to benefit from animal proteins, which are essential for their health. The term "high-quality protein" refers to sources that provide a complete amino acid profile, crucial for both humans and animals to maintain muscle mass, energy levels, and overall health. Although taurine isn’t classified as essential, it is vital for the well-being of certain dog breeds, and vitamin B12, while originating from bacteria, is most readily absorbed from animal products. As for environmental concerns, while pet ownership contributes to resource use, the idea that it significantly impacts global overheating is misleading. Climate change is a complex issue that doesn't hinge on pet diets.

      Read the small print, they are working with a UK cultivated meat start up (lab meat) to develop a meals for cats by carefully removing just a few cells from a single chicken egg - a process done just once - to create, in theory, billions of kilograms of genuine chicken meat. Apparently it doesn't require killing any chickens & given that chickens are going to lay eggs anyway, is it an ethical problem? I wonder if it needs to be a fertilised egg or not? I don't know.

      @@reesecarr2105 There are two main "alt meat" concepts being explored at present; "lab meat", which are made from samples of real animals, & "precision fermentation", which are made yeasts/fungi/bacteria. At present, I don't know of any of the second being applied to pet food but both are multi-billion dollar investment industries.
      There are ethical issues with lab meat, most isn't vegan, but in general the idea of it being used for pet food is being given a free pass because it's so much better than the current system.
      In general, however, it is even more vegan just not to have pets & be against pet keeping.

      @@reesecarr2105 Appreciated. I always though feeding cats dry breakfast cereal was weird animal products or not. Imagine spending your whole life eating nothing but the same dry breakfast cereal three times a day. Or even the same junk pet food as humans feed them. The entire habit of keeping other species is so fraught with ethical problems. I've seen far too many bad examples ...
      Given that they are not humans, & have dietary restrictions, their welfare is the best argument in favour of lab meat. However, I'd like to ask without judgement, why you didn't rescue a mostly herbivorous animal, like a rabbit, instead.
      Many vegans seem to have an irrational blind spot when it comes to cats, & I think it's a hang over from pre-vegan "animal loving" days.

      The new food Omni are developing is using lab meat, "chicken" grown from "a few cells taken from eggs". May or may not help. Just out of interested, have you tried him on a raw meat diet? Bear with me a minute ... I'm referring to day old chicks pet shops sell to snake or lizard owners. Let's be honest, it's what he would have been eating in the wild, & it's not only dietetically superior to the crap pet food manufacturers put in their junk food, it's ethically superior as at least the fowl involved aren't put through months of hell before being slaughtered.
      They are all the male chicks who are slaughtered by the egg industry & die on day one.
      And, on the other hand, have you considered the ethics of keeping him alive if a) he's going to suffer, & b) in the wild he would have been dead long ago due to it?
      Why should 100s of healthy animals have their lives ended each year to prolong the life of one unhealthy animal?
      The second question reads harsh, but I write it having watched a cat die due to kidney/urinary issues. It's not pleasant.

      @fortcastlevgn2368 I believe the best food for cats - until the lab meat comes out -- is dehydrated/boxed non-plant based human grade (you add water back in) as they are obligate carnivores. Get rid of all cans and kibble. My vegan friend's 11 year old cat has thrived for 8 years on this, energetic, shiny, happy. Worry about humans being vegan, not trying to force cats. The issue of animal based pet foods has also been coopted by the anti-vegan, pro-slaughter industry lobbies as a sort of proxy war. Just as they don't want humans going vegans, they don't want companion animals going vegan either. The debate is at about the same level as the human anti-vegan arguments were in the 1950s & 60s, & there's a lot of psychological projection going on. Animals for pet foods are a key economic factor in the profitability of the slaughter industries.
    It's a $100bn dollar plus income stream for them, not just "scraps" being recycled.
    Knock $100bn dollars off the slaughter industries' bottomline, & you make a big dent in it.

    Feeding dogs and cats which are hyper and obligate carnivores a plant based diet is animal abuse.
    I don't care if you have some poorly controlled weak associative studies with conflicts of interest, confounding variables, short term results and results that can't be repeated under the same conditions that can't prove causation and are heavily financially incentivised saying otherwise 😂
    Don't confuse hyper carnivores with omnivores, they're completely different things. Just because dogs can tolerate plant matter to a degree doesn't mean they can primarily rely on it, seriously open a book once in a while. Dogs don't have the physiological mechanisms, digestive anatomy, digestive enzymes or gut bacteria that herbivores do and neither do cats or us for that matter. Cats can't tolerate plants at all since they're literally obligate carnivores. Feeding these animals plants will cause metabolic issues, neurological issues, musculoskeletal issues, gastrointestinal issues, autoimmune issues, dental issues, nutritional deficiency issues etc...
    Seriously if you actually care about animals just get a rabbit instead.
