  • Take a tour of the Alaska ferry and the ship M/V Columbia. In this episode we'll show you what it looks like, how to make a reservation on the Alaska ferry and what it costs.
    We filmed this while riding the Alaska ferry from Juneau, Alaska, to Bellingham, Washington. The boat made short stops in Wrangell and Petersburg and a three hour stop in Ketchikan, Alaska, before sailing the final two days to Bellingham.
    The official name of the Alaska ferry is the Alaska Marine Highway System.

    I've only had the opportunity to take an overnight ferry once, and I would love to do it again. Camping on the deck would make it a unique experience. The Navy did give me the chance to cross the Pacific three times on a ship, I wouldn't want to do that again. Thanks for sharing.

      I guess crossing the Pacific on a Navy ship would be a little bit different than riding a ferry. What ship were you on?

      @@iLikeMike I left about a year before it was decommissioned early due to damage from a grounding. It was commissioned in 1954 so the Navy didn't want to invest in repairs for such an old ship.

    We rode our Honda Goldwing trike from our home in the Houston, Texas area to Fairbanks, AK back in 2017. Spent 10 days riding around in Alaska. Then loaded up on the ferry in Skagway and rode that to Prince Rupert, BC. We had a little cabin for two nights. Great views and an excellent experience. The ferry was one of the best parts of the trip. 6 weeks and 11,000 miles. 👍

      I didn't know about the ferry, either, until I started planning the drive.

    Did 5 day passage from Bellingham to Whittier with my R1200GS (BMW motorcycle)
    Saved MANY MANY miles on my way to the DALTON HIGHWAY.
    Returned INLAND route back to the US.

    Is there showers and laundry facilities? How large of a vehicle can you drive on? Is it ada compliant?

    • @iLikeMike
      @iLikeMike  4 месяца назад +1

      There are free showers and the water is nice and hot. There are washers and dryers and you can get change from the purser to operate them. There were large Class C motorhomes, some even with trailers, that were driven onto the vehicle deck. The two boats I was on are ADA compliant.

    Great video. I called the costumer service and was told a cabin would be $500 and $460 for the passage from Bellingham to Juneau so that’s almost $1000 for less 3 days. Sounds very expensive and you still have to buy food. Am I mistaken?

    • @iLikeMike
      @iLikeMike  4 месяца назад

      You're correct, the Alaska ferry is not a cheap ride. You do have to still buy food onboard or bring your own.
