Watch his head. He looks at the target location before making the move. Today I learned.

I love how Tony plays fretless his way even using a pick. People like to limit fretless to jazz. They even compare anyone playing fretless to Jaco. You don't have to play like Jaco to enjoy fretless. Just play it your way.

I love playing fretless in rock. There's way more fretless players in rock than people realize, too: TF, Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, Seal, King Crimson, tons of sessions), Rick Danko (The Band), Mick Karn (Japan), Boz Burrell (Bad Company), and John Paul Jones (various Zep songs), just to name some.
TF and TL both used pick on a fretless a good bit.

Tony Franklin's intonation is absolutely incredible, and his technique is masterful. He makes the complicated seem easy, even though it isn't. Example: His ability to slide into notes with a level of accuracy that is either spot-on or at the very least musical. To have intonation that is musical if not perfect is really my ultimate fretless aspiration. #respect

I used to use a pick prior to getting my Fretless, but after this I might alternate!

If you haven't heard... check out an album by Menchen... called Red Rock. Tony plays some delicious bass tracks on every tune. In my opinion... the album is a classic and Tony's bass lines makes it sound divine.

I totally get what your saying...music is about expressing a feeling in that moment in time your in...it doesn't have to be perfect, I remember I was once told that if you made a mistake do it again people will think it's part of the tune😂 I'd never do that but it was a lesson. The pick definitely cuts through better on the fretless.

You're nuts...in fact he has a great sound whether he's using a pick or not...one of the best fretless sounds around for me.
