I cry rivers of tears every damn time I see this. The first lullabye I ever sang to my son... Hell he wasn't even a few hours old. I am an awful singer, and even 7 years later when he is sad or scared he almost begs me to sing that song to him... ummm yeah the onions I was chopping are getting to me.... I will just be in the corner... no I'm fine...

My son is almost 21...I still think of the stuff I sang to him when he was a baby in '01-'02...he loves the 70s & 80s...I used to sing Moonshadow to him. Yeah, the Cat Stevens song.

They were an essential part of what made Husker Du timeless.

So beautiful how Grant sings almost all the song along with his old friend and soulmate Bob (not done on studio version). This is made all the more poignant by the fact that a) they were at complete loggerheads at this time and not speaking (1987) and b) the introspective, serenity infused lyric ("You better grab a hold of something, simple but it's true / If you don't stop and smell the roses now they might end up on you"). I don't think Bob was particularly writing about the band/their friendship but the touchpoint is still there (not dissimilar to "Two of us" by The Beatles).
The two of them did not speak after the Huskers folded. I'm glad that they met just before Grant passed and Bob wrote a touching farewell note to his estranged friend, clearly an effort for the closed up person he is.
    Love prevails.

as many of the other posters have said this is one of the best songs ever. somehow it makes much more sense to me at age 40 than it did when I first heard it at age 19 ..... "if you don't stop to smell the roses now they might end up on you" and "expectations only mean you really think you know what's coming next, and you don't" are words to live by....

I first heard this song just after the album came out....I was working at a record shop in Windsor CT and got this on vinyl. A Co worker was a huge fan and turned me on to this amazing band. I'm as big of a fan at 53 as I was at 19

A really great song. I bought "Warehouse" while in law school and this was the first one I heard. I've always loved it so, so much.

This song sounds great live, but it sounded way too thin on the record. That last album had horrible production.

Horrible but the lyrics are good. Heard about this song. It's like a peek into my neighbors garage.

@cubistblues Heheh... CSNY's post-hardcore days... Boy am I fond of those. Remember back when David Crosby was straight edge and would stage-dive into the crowd and start a circle pit that would end up swarming the band on stage and they would continue to play harder and faster until they were 10 Miles High and Rising?
    Man, that was epic!

@kwakky Because they were always boasting about how great their harmonies were and because they would have shit themselves if they heard it.

@kwakky Maybe so, but their introspective, dissonant post-hardcore was definatinely better than CSNY's introspective, dissonant post-hardcore.
