- "Oak Demon" for solo contrabassoon - Dave Volpe
contrabassoon - Anthony Parnther
instrumentation: solo contrabassoon
duration: 3.5 minutes
(Dave Volpe writes)
"When my dear friend and very accomplished bassoonist Anthony Parnther approached me to write a piece for him to showcase his contrabassoon, I was inspired immediately. It isn’t often we get to hear the contrabassoon on its own. As the lowest instrument in the orchestra, it is usually supporting the strings or brass with its sepulchral depth.
Few are aware that this deep leviathan has a lyric side. Not only did I want to exploit its more expressive qualities, I wanted to take it to its extreme: I wanted it to dance. And so poured out this tune that I called Oak Demon. It is taunting and playful, yet menacing at the same time - a combination that only a contrabassoon can achieve."

this sums up why i want a contrabassoon
But it’s at least 30k
@@hydromatic2688 I have one because I played organ at a church for 500 bucks a day
@@6to7figures no you don’t and no you didn’t.
@@kishascape yes he do and yes he did.
@@hydromatic2688 Used contras ... can be found ... and are around 10K. Amani are maybe around 15K New.
This is a very underrated instrument, I wish orchestras would use it more often!
Why do you think Tchaikovsky never used the contrabassoon? It was certainly around then. He used other instruments from the extended woodwind family; piccolo, cor anglais and bass clarinet. Why no contrabassoon?
@@lucpraslan and why Stravinsky, Ravel, Beethoven, Debussy, Mahler... used it?
It's the same situation as the bass flute, too textural for a lot of modern day composers taste. Woodwinds as a whole in modern works do not get enough attention, they're fairly melded with brass now to just be there for colour while strings get all the love. Tragic.
@@minder01 as an aspiring modern composer, contrabassoons are very interesting and will sometimes use it. i am also a flautist and respect other woodwinds
Is it just me? Or is his intonation so much better than most others? He has one of the best sounds on contra bassoon that I’ve heard. Certainly the best intonation.
Not entirely sure how I ended up here, but good stuff.
XDD
The one benefit the contra has over us tubists is you have a much more versatile lowest end of your instrument, whilst tubas can't quite go fast down there.
The only exception to that rule is Gene Pokorny, of course... but for the rest of us mere mortals yes. That range is just there for them with such greater facility. Makes me mad lol.
It really depends on the tuba you have, a standard Bb tuba yes we can't go down that low that fast, but there are others that can, I'd have to check but I think a 4 valve Bb contrabass tuba could play this, but it wouldn't have the same clarity or feel as a contrabassoon.
True. Tuba sounds big and clunky in the low register.
@@awildjared1396 yeah It is also the context too. Tuba can make a much more powerful pedal sound maybe, and unlike the contra it can easily go subcontra if needed. I was just thinking say if you wanted to do a fast 16th note section on a tuba in say C1 range, it may not be desirable for that
Best sound of all the contra instruments.
Wow, this works really well on contrabassoon
dude, you did NOT have to flex on us THAT HARD with that case full of reeds at the beginning. this is awesome.
That bass moment at 59 seconds, DAMN. Thumbs up.
Great sound and chops!!
That last note!
JUST WOW!
Utterly rivetting. Wow. Wish the camera work had included Parnther's left hand, and views from behind so we could see the thumbs at work--so much agility demanded from bassoonists' thumbs. What a superb virtuoso! where can we hear him live?
This is giving me some _Close Encounters_ vibes.
😲.. powerful tone. That's a BIG air column.
Bravo👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I think I might purchase the score.
Anthony is one of the best bassoonist I know
He's the only bassoonist I know
The Contrabass is NOT a Bassoon. In fact it shares more in common with the Alto Sax

Sounds Great!
Wow! Wonderful piece! Fabulous playing!
Great video, you deserve more subscribers
I play bassoon right now and would love to play an contrabassoon!
Same
It's a lot of fun. I played contra throughout my 4 years of college and enjoyed every moment of it. Just be prepared to count lots of rests and haul it around. Plan your routes, make multiple trips, and keep an eye on it at all times. Also, it cuts through EVERYTHING, even the whole band/orchestra at full power. It is in every contra player's best interest to be mindful of how powerful it is.
Thank you for inspiring me to play this piece Mr. Parnther!! You are truly remarkable :)
Just Amazing 🤩

almost sounds like dubstep to me (2009/8) ^^
Is there some adaptation of this for normal bassoons? If so I NEED IT
I literally just started bassoon and own a contrabassoon
bass
For all the instruments people say sounds like farts, this is the only true one
Guess you've never heard a Contrabass Sax or Contrabass Trombone 😂
What kind of headphones are those?
Hilfe!
Very musical farts here
That last low note sounds like my washing machine
ye daddio
I can make similar notes after some three bean salad and sauerkraut.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👍😂😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍👍😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👍👍👍
Finally, some action in a bass instrument.. I'm sick of it playing a fricken slow and simple melody and just sounding like a couple farts
Sounds a lot like s bari sax
but better
No it doesn't, it sounds like a contrabassoon.
That would be a Contrabass Sax, a BariSax wishes it could sound that good and play that low 😂
Farts
