Libertango by Astor Piazzolla
I first heard this tune in the 1980’s, but under the auspices of Grace Jones’ “I’ve Seen That Face Before”. It was years later that I learned that this piece was composed by Argentine tango composer, Astor Piazzolla.
I had the opportunity to play this wonderful bassoon quartet version (that I later lightly modified for 5 and 6 bassoons) on a dear friends recital some years ago, and finally decided to record the whole thing myself in my home studio.
I sincerely hope you enjoy this beautiful little tune.
(P.S. if you listen very carefully, the last “a minor” chord features the low A of a special contrabassoon with an extension, the lowest pitch a piano can play.)
