@blue222blue Stop complaining you were at the better gig. Do you know how many would have loved to be at Woodstock. The fact is by 1969 there were more good bands and the music had evolved. This is great stuff of course but rudimentary. Everyone had gotten better. Including the Dead as LIVE Dead is way more happening than this which could have been Quicksilver Messenger Service. Jerrys guitar work really improved as did Hendrix. Then we have Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, Canned Heat. Again the Who's performance is better in 1969 as well whatever negative things they had to say about Hippies!
I saw this group a few weeks later at Hollywood Bowl, and never forgot the volume and Sound they put out, and I never heard it again until this vid now., like at 8:30-9:00. Remember it vividly, musical explosion of thunder. Wow! And I saw them several times 1971-74, but not like this!
The Dead always claimed this was a bad performance, not up to the standard of the day. However, it is a fine example of their raw early sound. Great camera angles too. Nice restoration job!

There are some INCREDIBLE live performances for those who know. Far better than their peers. At their best they were As Dylan Put it. 'Americas greatest Rock band'. Mixing jazz , blues, country and psychedelia. I consider this to be OK as they got better. It was not really until mid 1968 that they honed their skills to the point of being better than just a Jam band. LIVE DEAD, Skulls and Roses and Europe 72 and Bears Choice all prove you wrong!

TLR I’m not old enough to have seen Monterrey (and I’m an east coast guy), and I have always been a big Hendrix fan. But IMHO, the Dead put on some amazing stuff right here in this video! I was amazed! 🔥

One things fer sure, This 1967 Festival is saved on my Time Machine's coordinates. If I can only get it up n runnin' again.
charlie rosillo he doesn’t suck playing wise, he’s pretty good. he gets hate cause he went mainstream for a bit, made money from being a mainstream artist.. to which he made a good amount of money, now he can play whatever style of music he wants because he’s established and doesn’t need to worry about money. Now that’s smart. where he messes up is his stage presence and appearance. if I wanna see an average joe wearing the same clothes he’d wear when he’s hanging at home, I’d rather go to guitar center to see that. you have to have a look when you’re a musician. Just look at the Grateful Dead in this video. When you’re playing live, the first thing people notice about an artist is the visual side of things. That’s because the song comes on after. my opinion.
Lori Burns I don’t think he sucks, but i think his style isn’t conducive to the way The Dead operated. I do NOT like his singing. But I might go see Dead&Co just to experience what’s left. 🤷🏻♂️

Kreutzman was only 18. On their first album, I believe, he was listed as Bill the Drummer, because he was legally too young to be a professional musician, or something.

I'll try and get the Grape footage up tomorrow they do a wild version of Hey Grandma including tom smothers intro to the band too about how they were the first act to perform the day they did. The Steve Miller footage is interesting too but it's only an excerpt of Mercury Blues and a jam. I wish they filmed the whole thing but you have to remember the guys DA Pennebaker hired to film it I know one of them worked at a post office right before he was hired and they were using 15 minute rolls of color film and on top of that not everyone was filming at the same time so there might only be excerpts of anything else that was filmed. Don't ask me for any of it tho (besides what I told you I have) because I have the knowledge but I'm only a fan.
And yet, a few short years later, the vast majority of the audience would abandon the dream (The Dead, Jimi, you name it) for.... wait for it.... DISCO!!!????

The Grateful Dead themselves said Monterey was a below average performance for them. Woodstock too. This sounds pretty great to my ears though. Jerry joked that they played their worst at all the historic festivals.
Even their Woodstock set isn't so bad, the DarkStar and Lovelight kick ass especially the ending of Lovelight and I'd upload it but it would probably get blocked and taken down. Maybe I'll give it ago anyways.

The Grateful Dead themselves said Monterey was a below average performance for them. Woodstock too. This sounds pretty great to my ears though. Jerry joked that they played their worst at all the historic festivals.
Even their Woodstock set isn't so bad, the DarkStar and Lovelight kick ass especially the ending of Lovelight and I'd upload it but it would probably get blocked and taken down. Maybe I'll give it ago anyways.
