I still decorate my rooms with stuff from thrift-stores, especially the picture frames. Angela Benedict Hello, darling! I am one of the modern teenage goths who grew up with Internet and never saw the 90's (outside of the little sliver of '99 when I was born). I've been identifying as Goth for almost 3 years now, and hearing you describe what it was like back then makes me feel so sorry for what is available now. There are like 0.5 other Goth people in my high school of 2,000 people. The only way to find new music is online. Concerts for bands I like either don't happen or happen way too far away. It just touches my soul to hear you talk about these things that many others don't address. However, I would like to point out that it is not solely internet which is to blame. Kids these days have too much responsibility to be goth the way goth was back then. You've got to take 4 APs, be active in 7 clubs, be president in one of them, be in 4 honor societies, and figure out what you want to do in life by the time you're a freshman. Otherwise you're not good enough for college or a good job. It's a lot of pressure and it's hard to find time for sleep, let alone going outside and hanging out with friends. In fact, in my school, there are two kinds of people who see their friends outside of school: those who are having a study group, and those who are partying and probably not going to college. I'm just saying that teens these days have a lot less freedom and more expectations than teens in the 80's and 90's. I think that's an unexplored reason why the physical subculture has been replaced with a digital one. I love your videos so much! Keep being awesome!
Hey Niara! I really appreciate the points you've raised. Growing up many of us had responsibilities in which we had to keep up with as well. I'll give you an example, we had regents and honors classes which came along with additional responsibilities. Our school has a 0 period and the students who were unlucky enough to get one had to be in school nearly an hour before everyone else. I was one of the unfortunate ones in 11th grade. Many of my friends were part of school groups such as graphic design, photography my good friend Corrine was on the swim team and a force to reckoned with-- I swear she must have had dolphin blood in her. Year book, Drama club and on top of those things we had to maintain a good GPA as well as a part time job. I have a teenage sister and have been exposed to both herself and peer group and I have to say, I don't see much difference between pressures. I'll tell you this, you got it much easier when you have to do a report-- Try doing that without google or wiki. The scene has evolved and the internet has provided a great way to find new music. I use it myself! When I discuss how we found it as babybats it's really more for historical reference. It's not to say that one is better than the other. That's really subjective. It was just harder for us but in the end we respected it more when we found it because of the pining and effort. Everything was a treasure hunt whether it was for the perfect vintage dress, CD, newest issue of Carpe Noctem but it was never a chore. It was something we looked forward to because it was our solace. Responsibilities are always going to be there but in the end it didn't matter how much extra work we had to put in that day, we were going to the Switchblade Symphony concert at Wetlands on Saturday night.
I remember as a kid watching The Hunger and seeing Bauhaus in the opening credits and saying to myself that was incredible! From then on I always liked darker music. As far as '"discovering" the Goth scene, it was because of a chick I had a crush on in my 1st semester of college. From there I hit the clubs and got into the music more and more and yep I'm guilty of buying a fuckton on vhs tapes from all kids of bands.
I'm such an OG goth I saw Bauhaus live in 1983! The intro to "The Hunger" remains one of my favorite moments in film. Back in the day, live shows, album art, and MTV's precious "120 minutes" were our only scant & precious exposure to bands, artists, and goth cultures apart from one's local scene. Later we got indie zines, Propaganda, Gothic Beauty, the Cleopatra catalogues, festivals, etc. I remember when Hot Topic first opened & was actually cool. Ah, good times.
Ahhhh you look so stunning!!! Is it weird that the album of my life is actually Trance Party Vol. 1? 🤔 Honestly in my goth life I've always listened to and been open to any and all kinds of music so, when I got this album in my hand at 10, it was love at first listen! I actually just bought it again with my tax return (you know the $5 I'm able to use from it...). Of course I love all the gothic and metal music that hits my soul, but I always find myself coming back to that album 🖤
the very first CD I ever heard that was the gateway into the goth world was the goth industrial club anthems CD. It had bands like Bauhaus skeletal family sisters of. mercy great video angela!!! of any wait to watch them!!!
Oh, I've watched that documentary-ish vid, too! It's such a cool cultural artifact for those of us born during/after the scene's emergence to be able to see that glimpse of its roots. I'm really glad someone was able to upload that so it's out there for the younger Goths to see.
I still remember when Rozz Williams died. I was destroyed. Every day I think about him and wish I could have seen him just once. It would have been such a gift
I feel like you addressed the things I had been thinking about while recently viewing your channel. Thank you very much. The video quality is looking stellar, by the way.
Your videos always brighten my day. They're one of the few times I actually feel connected to the rest of the goth scene! Unfortunately, I live in a town where I'm pretty I'm the only goth around (and with no goth scene to speak of). Do you have any tips about making friends with other people in the subculture?
Good old VHS you can't beat it! Reminds me when I was 16. I stayed up til' the middle of the night to see my favorite music show and record every episode on VHS
You got me there. Like I've said before I am a super fan of Strawberry Switchblade. I may or may not possess one of the Japanese car adverts that had one of their songs in it...
We had a show on German cable TV between 88 and 90 on "Tele 5" called "Off Beat" that covered Post Industrial, Goth, and Punk. Can't remember a week when they hadn't at least one Einstürzende Neubauten clip on the show :-) A couple a years later VIVA Germany started as a MTV competitor and they had a show that was a mix of MTVs 120 minutes and "Off Beat" retaining some of "Off Beats" content but added all that Indie and Grunge stuff from that time. Dern I miss the days when music television was actually broadcasting music.
I am hopeful that this video would lead to a makeup tutorial of your look here. Also, I like how you're restoring my faith in humanity with this playlist. :) ♥
Goth Box VHS was my first time seeing these artist also. I remember buying it at Newbury Comics when I was 16. It also came with a sample cd of some of the artists from the Goth Box CD set. Still have that VHS will never part with that 😊 Awesome video feeling nostalgic.
That playlist is fun. As an old Punk, this music is just dark new wave to me, lol I'm pre-goth. I totally rememeber these days. Thanks for compiling it!
This sent me on a nostalgia trip that ended with an installation of DOS and DOOM II....lol..p.s I think your previous vid just got Netflix to finally add The Craft...:)
OH YES I also had the Cleo Goth Box! Great source of material in the pre-internet years. I would watch the Corpus Delicti video literally over and over again.
Sheffield England my home city, I grew up going to Corporation, there was another club/pub called the Nelson but besides that we didn’t go anywhere else as Corp was home we felt safe. Love your videos found you yesterday 🖤
I have some Goth VHS tapes and audio tapes and it's still incredibly fun to pop them in. I thankfully already have 2/3 Propaganda Videozines (Vol. 1 and Vol. 3). They're two of my most beloved tapes. I think Goth tapes are still seen as super valuable. Those who have them usually know what they're worth. I think that's why if you look for the Propaganda Videozines, it's extremely difficult to find a copy. Those who have them, cherish them. Same with homemade live video tapes of the popular Goth bands of the time. Even copies of albums by bands like The Shroud and Requiem in White go for quite a bit. The Goth subculture has a market of it's own. What's valuable to us is almost entirely different from the mainstream market.
I wish my mind wasnt so zombified lol but you make me flash back to back then and I did remember there was a coffee shop where I lived in LONG BEACH CA and it was where all the local goths would go and just hangout and also up the street there was a corner goth bar where Christian Death played I was super young but my best friend and I knew the owner and his wife so we got to go in and I had to peel my best friend off Rozz's leg hahaha aww I know I said this before but I truly appreciate you for sharing this it's super important especially for the little ones its history I wasn't goth back then I was more of a little punk ass but my best friend was goth I remember her grasping on to it as I was just to full of hate and anger now I can say I'm finally getting into my "gothy" side but at the same time I've been around goth forever so it's not new to me I'm just wearing a new pair of shoes lol if that makes sense 😊 sorry for the ramble haha
I was born in 93 and growing up I wish that I had goth music videos on VHS because that would be cool to own some. Your videos have awesome music on them and I've put some in my Goth music playlist.
Great video Angela. Its interesting to hear things from the perspective of someone who lives in America. The internet has really been embraced by Goths, which is wonderful, its good to hear things from a historical perspective. VHS... Ahh yes, remember it well.. lol
Angela, you're going to make me OD on nostalgia! LOL I have all these videos, too (and miraculously a working VCR). Did you go to Kim's and covet all those import tapes? They were so $$$! And stumbling on a good find at Tower Video- you could barely wait to get home
Did I!? I loved that store. They had the best imports. I took a header down that dip in the middle of the store. New platforms and I was laser focused lol. I got something else I for Nostalgia, I'm so excited to unveil it in the next over-- The overload will be intense!
I once owned a Propaganda VHS tape that featured a short film about the, "Blood Countess." It's ubiquitous display of a bat in slow-motion flight during scene changes gave birth to the phrase, "Gratuitous Bat Segue," in my circle of friends. ;) Also, the tape included some lovely early videos of The Shroud.
Kind of weird, but I just played this video and listened to you speak as if it were a podcast, while buried under my blankets. If you ever had a podcast, I would totally tune in !
Ohh wow. Fantastic ! Thanks for the link. I've been seeing that site sort of pop up in different places, but never explored it. Just left a little comment under your feature, but I think they've got to approve. Sidenote: what are two goth new yorkers doing up so late on a Thursday ..hmmm
I've definitely always been darkly inclined. However, I VERY limited in what I was allowed to do with my clothes/look and what media I was allowed as a kid. This video makes me think of when I used to sneak my mom's Sarah McLachlan CD into my Walkman when I was about 13. I would just listen to the first track, Building A Mystery, over and over again. 😂 Not that I'm saying that Sarah McLachlan is goth. That one song just paints such a picture. Still one of my favorites! Discovering Mephisto Walz and Lycia, about a year or so later, definitely changed my little teenage life.
This was so true. I still remember a friend of mine calling me franticly and me taking three buses to get across town just because she got Staring At The Sea: The Images.
I have no interest in goth stuff or literally any topics on your channel but I am so interested in what you have to say bc its something about the way you explain everything, makes me want to know more lol
I remember finding my first Cleopatra CD.. it was 1996 and it was a small record store in NJ.. and it was Bread and Jam for Frances by Switchblade Symphony...good times
Lol honestly its very interesting to hear you talk about going to goth clubs or places with other gothic or like minded people. I wish I had that now because chances are that my local starbucks is not going to change Ariana grande to sisters of mercy :P And one day you need to put your husband on camera!
I can remember as a kid watching the talkshows you know my kid is a freak episodes let me and my mom saying how beautiful they looked in my mom with tape everything so one of my regrets is when we moved from our house that we lost all these tapes from the 90s it had thousands of hours of stuff like this
@@angelabenedict I asked the DJ who did the song but he misunderstood me he thought I asked about the song after it, which is also in that video, Blancmange, Living on the Ceiling.
in your videos you list off a lot of gothic bands so to speak and no matter how long youve been in the goth scene its always great finding new bands. so if you could kindly list off a few bands you have deeply enjoyed it would be greatly appreciated- thanksx
I had the DVD of the goth box, found it at tower records in Okinawa, came with a 2nd dvd called gothic industrial madness. Didnt care for that one but the first disc I played endlessly on a loop. Some of those videos were of aweful quality but it didnt matter. Recently picked up the Switchbalde Symphony phantom of the opera and The Nosferatu dvds that cleopatra put out back in the day. Nosferatu is alright but that phantom of the opera is just as good as I remember it to be.
Question: did you ever have a chance to get your hand on "The Whip" compilation? That is still my all time fave. A friend brought it to school (8th grade) on cassette and we would listen to it over and over. I've since purchased it on CD twice. It's one of those albums that just always bring me back.
Actually found a goth post punk night in the UK not far from me. I thought there wasn't anything at all near me!! Had a great night. Turns out it was an old mate who was actually the dj!! Who knew?! 😂😂😂😂 I don't dance, ever but made an effort cos my girlfriend asked for a ton of tunes. Fantastic night💜🖤💜🖤
I was a prep till I got to High School or at least tried. Fed up with that I became Goth in the early 2000's I absolutely love being a Goth even if I don't always look it.
Where did you get the lace shirt from yoga re wearing in the video? Ahhhh Propaganda..... Loved their mags and stuff. The documentary video sounds really cool. You make me want to see it. lol!
On my videos? I use Windows Movie Maker. I'm lucky it has an option for me to add music. As for my photo, I have photoshop CS2, the best I can hope for there is 'curves' to adjust the lighting so again, no filter.
Awww such great memories. Loved Cleopatra and propaganda mag. I had so many velvet dresses and so much lace, and a little vinyl. Then Goth seemed to go steampunk/rave goth. No offense just wasn’t the same.
Some of the videos in the playlist really resonated with me, but a larger portion felt a little bit "off". At first I couldn't quite understand why I felt myself wanting to love the music but internally cringing at certain sounds. Then, the realization finally hit me: These were the first cries of a new genre being born. My interest in Gothic music came around in the early 2000's as my taste in music grew from Linkin Park and Megadeth to include Industrial and the gateway drug known as Evanescence. From there I crawled down many rabbit holes: Epica, Lacuna Coil, Sirenia, Within Temptation, The Birthday Massacre, Leaves Eyes, Delain, Xandria, Nightwish, Therion, The Ancient Bards... Do you have any recommendations on further gateways to the more ethereal types such as Mephisto Walz? I'd love to check out more modern variations of that style.
I wanted to be a vampire since I was 7? And when I was old enough for clubs… Dallas 1984😁 ( I found my Death rock family)! And if you weren’t listening to Christian Death and Souxsie? And didn’t have the cash to shop at that one store downtown Dallas? You were a poser!😂😁- It was all about The Stark club and Deep Elum? Those were great days!!!
I'm curious, were you influenced by the LiveJournal community "Gothic Babes" at all? I know when I stumbled upon that community I would spend hours looking at everyone's pictures and picking out make up or clothing styles I liked and adding them to my style. I miss that so much LOL!
do you have a link for the sheffield video - i lived in sheffield in the early 2000's (it is a wonderful place) and would be delighted if i recognised some of the people.
thankyou !. i've not seen anyone familiar in it so far. Not that i really expect that i would recognise any babygoths when i only knew them when they were old :). Really interesting music selection played . The goth library of music was not well filled up in 1984 and it was strange to me hearing the low-fi bauhaus style be dominant was babybat the general term in america? we always used babygoth over here. ^o^

The old Cleopatra compilations were great discoveries for me!
Bob Markwell I plan on searching for them there's nice for nostalgia reasons.
Peter Murphy is the Goth King !!!
You look absolutely stunning
I'm in love with that red eyeshadow
TheLaylainlila i like all her playlist
Thank you! It's actually crimson lipstick.
Thanks for sharing. I’ve been awfully nostalgic today in 2121 and watching you being nostalgic a few years ago makes me even more nostalgic.
Oh, I've watched that documentary-ish vid, too! It's such a cool cultural artifact for those of us born during/after the scene's emergence to be able to see that glimpse of its roots. I'm really glad someone was able to upload that so it's out there for the younger Goths to see.
That ending was amazingly done. Amazing video overall as well but I love how you faded out at start it over again it was just perfect!
I still remember when Rozz Williams died. I was destroyed. Every day I think about him and wish I could have seen him just once. It would have been such a gift
Seriously, I have no idea how I found your channel a few weeks ago! I'm 24, and so far from goth, but I adore listening to you xx
Aww, that's very sweet of you
I feel like you addressed the things I had been thinking about while recently viewing your channel.
Thank you very much.
The video quality is looking stellar, by the way.
Oh my god, that Goth Box VHS was everything. I still pull up that Ghost Dance video from time to time. So damn good.
Your playlist brought me WAAAAY back!!!!!
I absolutely LIVED for that nosferatu song ❤
Thank you so much for sharing...
I love your story times, it gives me nostalgia for a time when I was only a wee bab! I hope you'll do more one day, goth or not. : )
Oh this brings me back; my eyes teared up. Thanks for taking g the time to make these videos and playlists!
I'm so happy you like!
Also can I just say I really appreciate the sneak-in of the Strawberry Switchblade video on the playlist?
How could I not? That definitely qualifies as an important video :)
You got me there. Like I've said before I am a super fan of Strawberry Switchblade. I may or may not possess one of the Japanese car adverts that had one of their songs in it...
I discovered Strawberry Switchblade in 1986 but didn't see the video for Since Yesterday until I got on the internet in 1995.
We had a show on German cable TV between 88 and 90 on "Tele 5" called "Off Beat" that covered Post Industrial, Goth, and Punk.
Can't remember a week when they hadn't at least one Einstürzende Neubauten clip on the show :-)
A couple a years later VIVA Germany started as a MTV competitor and they had a show that was a mix of MTVs 120 minutes and "Off Beat" retaining some of "Off Beats" content but added all that Indie and Grunge stuff from that time.
Dern I miss the days when music television was actually broadcasting music.
Kennst du noch Hard n Heavy ? Das lief auch immer auf Tele 5
I am hopeful that this video would lead to a makeup tutorial of your look here. Also, I like how you're restoring my faith in humanity with this playlist. :) ♥
thanks for the MTV Rozz clip. (RIP)
Would you ever do a makeup tutorial on this look or a skincare routine? I stg you slay my life 🖤🦇
I'm an esthetician so I was thinking of doing a skincare routine and show the products that I use along with some tips.
Angela Benedict YES PLEASE!! You're skin always looks so amazing.
yesss do it!
Goth Box VHS was my first time seeing these artist also. I remember buying it at Newbury Comics when I was 16. It also came with a sample cd of some of the artists from the Goth Box CD set. Still have that VHS will never part with that 😊 Awesome video feeling nostalgic.
Hey It's Kitten Tears you should upload it on here
yes, please! upload it on youtube!
Hopefully one day need to get my hands on a VHS player I know there is one still locked away in storage somewhere 😊
Fantastic!! I love how you're able to rehash feelings through videos!! This was amazing. Thank you for your time and effort to create this playlist! 😍
VHS... Ahh yes, remember it well.. lol
Thank you! I lived for tapes after I realized Goth videos existed.
i just like your retro-style, looks amazing!
I love it when I see you upload a new video!
I remember telling people I was an alternative music lover. Wasn't until a few years later that I was called goth
Your astonishing for a lack of better words. Wow.. and I love you style as welll!
I never gave up on VHS (or cassette tapes)!
Thank you for the Rozz link
No worries. I just wish I could have found the original news report as it appeared on MTV.
The power of your words is epic.
Love the Goth Box! Picked up a lot of music based off that.
Aww
Ohh wow. Fantastic ! Thanks for the link. I've been seeing that site sort of pop up in different places, but never explored it. Just left a little comment under your feature, but I think they've got to approve. Sidenote: what are two goth new yorkers doing up so late on a Thursday ..hmmm
Do you do makeup tutorials at all? (Kind of new to your channel) I always absolutely love your makeup!
Great video. I love your stories!
Amazing playlist woohoo! Saved it :D Great video as always
This was so true. I still remember a friend of mine calling me franticly and me taking three buses to get across town just because she got Staring At The Sea: The Images.
Angela I love the Play list. Great choices.
I have no interest in goth stuff or literally any topics on your channel but I am so interested in what you have to say bc its something about the way you explain everything, makes me want to know more lol
Your eyebrows are so perfect!
Love this video. Your makeup is amazing!
Would you eve do makeup tutorials?
I remember finding my first Cleopatra CD.. it was 1996 and it was a small record store in NJ.. and it was Bread and Jam for Frances by Switchblade Symphony...good times
Love, love, love your makeup in this video!
john koviak...
Lol honestly its very interesting to hear you talk about going to goth clubs or places with other gothic or like minded people. I wish I had that now because chances are that my local starbucks is not going to change Ariana grande to sisters of mercy :P
And one day you need to put your husband on camera!
I can remember as a kid watching the talkshows you know my kid is a freak episodes let me and my mom saying how beautiful they looked in my mom with tape everything so one of my regrets is when we moved from our house that we lost all these tapes from the 90s it had thousands of hours of stuff like this
i love this makeup! could you do a tutorial? also, great info!
i love your stories 💕
I'm glad you like!
Damn i just found this channel and i dont regret a thing 😊
I love your makeup in this video!
That goth club video from 1984 has a song I've been looking for for 34 years, The Stranglers the Skin Deep.
34 years! Holy crap, what a find.
If you check my playlists here, I've built several for you featuring many of the subgenres :)
Angela Benedict thank you!!!
I used to have a taped copy of when London after midnight was on the Montel Williams show from 1992 but I lost it in a move
I was a prep till I got to High School or at least tried. Fed up with that I became Goth in the early 2000's I absolutely love being a Goth even if I don't always look it.
Goth Box was amazing!
That playlist is fucking perfect!! Thank you!!
I'm so happy you like it! Did you watch the 80's club video?
Yes! I've actually seen it before. Wonder if there are any 90s Goth Club Docs out there.
I'm sad that I'm incredibly late here. I've watched all the wrong "goths".
Where did you get the lace shirt from yoga re wearing in the video? Ahhhh Propaganda..... Loved their mags and stuff. The documentary video sounds really cool. You make me want to see it. lol!
It was part of my eBay 3 outfits for $30 haul. Some lady in PA was cleaning out her closet and I got it for like $8!
Filter, Hey Angela Nice Shot !
What's with the Filter pun?
Angela Benedict i think its the Filter song hey nice shot/shirt
You use a video filter and it is a nice camera shot. You are as usual beautiful... I am doing a 90's joke. Playing with words. 95 Hey Man Nice shot ;)
On my videos? I use Windows Movie Maker. I'm lucky it has an option for me to add music. As for my photo, I have photoshop CS2, the best I can hope for there is 'curves' to adjust the lighting so again, no filter.
Haha I get it. Love that song.
Awww such great memories. Loved Cleopatra and propaganda mag. I had so many velvet dresses and so much lace, and a little vinyl. Then Goth seemed to go steampunk/rave goth. No offense just wasn’t the same.
"Pottering around." Hehehe! The British vernacular has rubbed off on you, I see. ;)
Evanescence indeed is a gateway drug. And HELL YEAH for Epica and Lacuna Coil!
Rozz Williams was such a loss. He does not get the credit he deserves. ~1334~
I agree :/ He was brilliant. Valor copyright the name Christian Death right after Rozz's passing. uncool.
Angela Benedict No "valor" in that is there?
I'm obsessed with John Koviak, I have to see that video UGHH ♥!! xD
You wont regret it :)
Those were great days!!!
you truly don't know what i'm ready to do to be born in the 70s and to actually meet peter steele..
I'm curious, were you influenced by the LiveJournal community "Gothic Babes" at all? I know when I stumbled upon that community I would spend hours looking at everyone's pictures and picking out make up or clothing styles I liked and adding them to my style. I miss that so much LOL!
I saw London After Midnight here in Amsterdam in 2010 - 2011 (ish)? I'm sure if I dig deep enough, I can find the pictures of them I took.
I love the necklace you're wearing! Where is it from?
Born in 1982. Still a goth.
do you have a link for the sheffield video - i lived in sheffield in the early 2000's (it is a wonderful place) and would be delighted if i recognised some of the people.
It should be there now. I thought I added it but turns out I didn't. Thanks for the heads up!
thankyou !. i've not seen anyone familiar in it so far. Not that i really expect that i would recognise any babygoths when i only knew them when they were old :). Really interesting music selection played . The goth library of music was not well filled up in 1984 and it was strange to me hearing the low-fi bauhaus style be dominant
was babybat the general term in america? we always used babygoth over here.
^o^
Helen Fairgrieve my friend was always asked if she was in a theatre production when we were in high school... and penguins.
