    Just ran across this - I hadn't played with the switch circuit on my Erebus, so that is pretty cool. I would think sending a sequencer driven gate would make for a cool switching effect for routing...
    Thanks for the video; really helpful stuff.

    I think I told you this on another part in the series but thanks again for these videos. You sold me on this thing. I just got confirmation that mine is shipping and will be here Tuesday and I absolutely can’t wait. This will be my first Dreadbox synth after years of pining for one.

    after nearly watching all your Erebus V3 videos - very helpful btw! - I think I prefer it over the Model D, even though more expensive. The mod options are really appealing + the filter is nice. Out of some reasons I never used the duophonic option with my old Erebus.

    Thank you, this video was very helpful: I had no experience with modular synths (my microbrute doesn't count..), and i was finding difficult to figure out ways to use the patch bay, even with the manual.
    About the analog switch: I patched the LFO to the filter cutoff and CV: it creates some kind of weird but fun enveloppe.
    About changing the clock rate: I used the LFO instead of the S&H: the changes of clock rate become smoother.

  • @invisibleoc
    @invisibleoc 4 года назад

    Oh, nice video - it's not really anything you couldn't get from the manual, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable to watch. You do love your big smooth pads, which is no bad thing.
    There were some nice examples- even if you can't really think of a completely convincing use for the switcher. Watching the video, I suspect that I've thought of one, but it'll have to wait until I have time to fire my v3 back up to see if I can make it work- I blame you! That floating VCA really is something I should use more, too.
    Thanks, oddly entertaining for a patching video and relaxing as ever.

    Been waiting for the V3 for a while. Loving your videos thanks. Agree that it is a real shame that you cannot modulate the filter. Also wondering, can it be synced to an external MIDI clock?

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks very much. There are a couple of patch points that take a clock signal so you can provide your own clock signal into those, but I don't believe you can directly synchronise say the built-in LFO to a particular clock as the LFO is free-running.

    Thanks Tim, great demonstration. I like the Dreadbox gear conceptually but I do find the execution of the range and finesse of the controls leaves a bit to be desired in some cases. I have a lil Erebus and plan to fit some re-scaled and better quality potentiometers to see if I can improve it as an experiment. Lil Erebus is not something that is particularly useful for music as it struggles to span an octave in tune however much pain you endure during the scaling and tuning procedure but it is quite a fun device despite this. Rob

      Hello, I'm planning to buy a dreadbox device like a lil erebus or an Erebus V3. I'm quite worried about the tuning problem of lil erebus. My question is should the tuning be made regularly or only once ? Does Erebus V3 has tuning issues as well ? Thanks a lot.

    • @ProfessorSynth
      @ProfessorSynth 5 лет назад

      Lambert Lambert : I have not heard of any tuning issues with the Erebus V3 and do not own one. I think it is probably OK. The lil Erebus however does have a limited octave range in which it will stay reasonably in tune. I think it will probably need retuning periodically which is quite a painful process so for musical work the Erebus V3 would be a much better choice. Rob

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  4 года назад +2

      Hi. That synth is the Erebus v3!! :) I'm playing my controller keyboard, playing three note chords, and each note is being sent to a different oscillator in the Erebus. You need some eurorack gear to achieve that. As for the freezing, I'm over-dubbing, so I have recorded the drone already, and I'm playing the drone back to me when I play over it with the chords.

    Fantastic video Tim, I’m almost sold on this, it should be my first synth. Pardon my ignorance. How would you patch the midi to cv/gate without using the eurorack module?

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks very much :) So just to confirm, using the synth in monophonic or duophonic mode, no patching needed. But for 3 voice paraphonic mode you need something to convert the midi signal into 3 separate CVs plus a gate signal. There are quite a few modular midi interfaces that do this but also some standalone hardware units. Best to do an internet search for different options....

    • @raulrodriguez82
      @raulrodriguez82 5 лет назад

      @@TimShoebridge Thanks for clarifying that. I got confused by the instructions on the manual: "Erebus V3 is a Duophonic synthesizer, but it can also be used in standard Unison (mono) mode. In or- der to change between the 2 modes, use the DIP switch 2 on the back panel. By default when 2 is off, Paraphonic mode is enabled.
      When in paraphonic mode, by hitting a single key all VCOs will follow this note, but by hitting a second at the same, it will have OSC 1 and OSC 3 playing the low note, and OSC 2 playing the higher note. This is always a low note priority. In duophonic mode, envelopes are always on a retrigger mode."
      They seem to be interchanging the terms as if they were synonyms.

    • @OgTitouan
      @OgTitouan 4 года назад

      @@raulrodriguez82 Nope, if you were in mono mode and pressed two notes, only the first one or the lowest will be played !
      You can still tune your second oscillator a fifth and then by pressing only one note you would hear two different pitches

  • @ObKling

    I don't get the multi inputs or outputs. Is it a multiple? Plug something in the first and have it come out both of the next? Also, I've heard there are a lot of these units that have midi problems. That's something that's put me off ordering one. Did you have any trouble or have you heard about midi problems? Thanks. Enjoyed all three videos on this synth.

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  5 лет назад

      Bjorn Lucas You are welcome. That out+ patch point is part of a special standalone VCA circuit, not the main VCA of the synth. You will see me do a couple of patch examples with that VCA later in the video. The input, cv, output- and output+ patch points are all linked with painted lines to show they are all related. I would suggest that you take the audio out from the rear of the synth, but you will need a 1/4 inch to 3.5mm cable or adapter to plug into your existing modular gear.

    That it cannot be played 3-note paraphonic via it's own MIDI input is it's only true letdown. They should have have fixed that by now. It is after their closest thing to a "poly", isn't it?

    • @thchris

      lol i was looking for someone to mention this.. i really like the sound of the erebus. but I am still deciding between it and the Behringer neutron... the way I see it is that the neutron offers more features for a smaller price. but I really like the sound and design of the erebus. if it could play 3 notes without much hastle i would get the erebus for sure.. kind of a huge wasted opportunity right here...

    Coming from an age when real polyphonics where unafordable (I am really THAT old!) I've always had a soft spot for paraphonic instruments because a good paraphonic can do most of the work of a polyphonic if need be. To learn that 3-note paraphonics are however not directly accesible via the internal MIDI interface is a bit of a letdown.

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 5 лет назад

      I wouldn’t be let down by it. After all, it’s billed as only 2 voice paraphonic. That patch is just a creative way to get 3. Not so much an oversight or missing feature, just the architecture of the synth.

  • @seek4truth
    @seek4truth 3 года назад +1

    I guess the main weakness of this synth is the filter, right?

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  3 года назад +1

      Well liking the sound of a filter is certainly a very personal thing. It's not a Moog filter for sure, and it has a subtly different response to the Erebus 2 (which it will always be compared to) but that difference is to be expected given the different design and multi-mode capability. There are very few semi analogue synths out there with a sweepable LP to HP filter, certainly 12Db, so I guess it has a sound and character of its own...
