  • If you love nature, you will love the San Quintin area in Baja California. We spent a week hiking volcanos at Punta Mazo natural reserve, kayaking los humedales (the wetlands), and eating the best shrimp tacos in Baja.
There are several extinct volcanoes in the surrounding area that have created rich soil, making San Quintin a major agricultural community growing berries, grapes, and tomatoes. We passed massive strawberry fields on our way to our campsite at Campo Don Alvaro in La Cochera. This tiny fishing village sits atop dramatic cliffs lined with beautiful beaches on the Pacific ocean and was the perfect spot to camp while we explored the natural beauty of the area. The two restaurants on site serve up some of the best seafood in Baja. Try the shrimp tacos and quesadillas.
Nearby are the wetlands, called los humedales in Spanish, which can be kayaked when tidal conditions allow. Be sure to check the tide tables before going to avoid getting stuck in the mud. Lots of birds call the wetlands home and they are a very unique place to visit in Baja.

The beauty never ends on your adventures. “I’m not sure this is safe” is something I often hear but we need to hear it!

Awesome! The hike up the volcano didn't look "easy" to me LOL. But the view was amazing. Those dirt roads looked like a challenge so it was good you didn't need to hurry. Keep safe, and keep enjoying the trip... your nearing the border and all the California traffic with its high prices.

The views were indeed amazing at the top! Definitely lots more traffic in California, but also wider roads!

There are some other trails up the other volcanoes, too! We just didn't have time to do more.

We enjoyed your video. We live in San Quintin so have been in most of these places. So sorry you did not get better directions to the volcanoes. After you climbed the volcano, you went to the wetlands to kayak. Where you put in your Kayak you were within two flat miles of the highway. Admittedly the road you took to get to the Humedales to Kayak is indeed rocky, but it is flat and much better equipped for travel with a trailer. That is a far simpler way to return to the main highway from Chorera. Sorry you needed to scale the sand dunes to return to the highway.

Thanks for the tip, we may have to try going that way if we make it back! The sand dune was a little hair raising, but we made it :-)

@@HomeARoam That was one fine job of driving up that sand dune. I have never had the nerve to pull a trailer up that hill.

We're either crazy or don't know any better 😜 We figured if we got down there must be a way for us to get back up.

@@HomeARoam That is logical. If you go somewhere then the opposite of the way you came ought to get you home.
