I remember always wanting one of these as a kid, but my mummy-moo couldn't afford me one. I was really impressed how well the 58 ran at the start considering how filthy the mechanism turned out to be.
Hi again. Just a quick thank you again for the T Cut tip. Just to let you know it works very well on dirty wheels. Just cleaned up 5 Lima J50's in next to no time. Saved me at least an hour.
Yup. T-Cut wasn't my idea I just passed it on but it works a treat on wheels as well yes. I mention this in my next video I'll probably upload tomorrow. Just be sure to polish it off with contact cleaner or ipa to avoid any residue.
You needed to put this on a heavy freight train to see if it can pull it. I have 2 of these, one in original condition and is pretty poor on pulling big trains. The other one has added weights which hasn't improved the hauling capacity tbh Great video as usual
For interest please include some voltage and current figures during the pre-service test run, and then the same after the service, it will show the difference a good service can make, the figures also show the state of the motor, especially the magnetic field strength
@@oobill superb mate ,👍🏻😊,fleabay hehehehe ,if I see one I’ll bell you Bill ,now whats you next model ??or is it a sunrise look forward to it abd I now use t cut great tip I used the fibreglass pen lightly but t cut better and my small can came with a booklet on t cut polishing .
Looks like they built that one to last. Wonder when the cut-off date was after which locomotives started looking a lot more lightweight and plasticky? Nice video, how to make a good runner run even better.
I sure that they used to have a ringfield motor when they first came out on the market, a friend had one, but I never got one, Although I did get a Heljan one a few years ago. Had the person who sent you that been running it on a dog or something? Never seen so much fluff and muck trapped in a motor before!
Hey love the videos! I was wondering if you would be able to do a video on the cleaning products and grease/ oil you are using and some of the tools 🔧 keep up the good work 💪 🚆🚉🚄🚋
A good suggestion. I've been doing a bit of research lately on lubricating locos etc. Once I'm happier with my own methods for this I will do. It's one of those subjects that a lot of people have very strong opinions on yet there is little, if any, clear definitive info on. I've changed my methods a lot from experimentation, advice, suggestions and criticism. So a video at some point on this is a must. 😉
Can you add captions to your older videos? I've watched enough to see your learning process, but people are still likely to watch your earlier presentations and hear you extolling fibreglass pencils (for example). I've seen others include captions to correct mistakes in the live commentary, and embedded links to other videos. Extra work for you, I know, but possibly also peace of mind as you'll know you're giving consistent advice. Just a thought.
@@rhiwderinraytubeAnd if the locos were in good order why send them? It's not taking advantage it's asking for help. I knew roughly what I was agreeing to.
Ah Bill. My 58s just started playing up 😢... So found your video a good reminder. Thanks. Any idea why the gears might be jamming? Im going to service it and see how it goes. One thing for sure it will not be as dirty as this example 😂
Gears can jam up due to wear, damage or foreign objects. With Hornby ringfields the gears get loose with wear of both the gears and the spindles on the motor block. An inspection should tell you what's up.
I've also developed a sickness for buying old locos and torturing myself trying to get them to run. To be honest adding a stay alive to them, as I'm on DCC, make as world of difference. Really is night and day (see my channel for recently serviced and fitted Hornby HyMek) The motors in these 58s, are they older than the ringfield style motors? Also any advice on fitting more up to date wheels to these older Hornby and Lima units?
Do you charge to fix locos ? I have 3 that needs a look at. Bachmann 2mt squeals in one direction Bachmann 45xx which sits there emiting smoke from the motor and a hornby Hymek squeaks at speed while running.
Loco wheel axles are splined so wheels simply pull off and push on. As long as you remove them carefully without forcing too far in either direction or turning them its fine. They just push back on. Hornby ringfield motor bogie wheels are especially easy to remove and refit.
@@oobill Thanks for that. Now a question that I cannot find an answer for, and I've searched many times on the internet............ I've got several diesels with the motor in the centre driving the 2 bogies and over time they have slowed right down to a worrying degree. I tried replacing the motor on one of them - a Bachmann Network Turbo - but that made no difference at all. Any experience of this yourself?
@@saltspringrailway3683 I've no experience of Bachmanns or DCC so probably not the best person to ask. But if I were you I'd be looking at the axles. Without regular maintenance any lubricant dries up and gets sticky. This will slow the loco down, put undue strain on the motor and will eventually stop.
Well you've done it again! I washed the gears (in situ) with Goo Gone followed by alcohol and my Turbo runs like a dream!!! I am therefore delighted but I have several other Bachmann diesels that I now have to work on! You sir are an inspiration.

You are a top banana 🍌 repairing these classic locos. I know this came out in around 1982/3. I remember it from my childhood.
A really under rated loco the hornby class 58. I love running mine, and there a doddle to covert to dcc. Great vid ooBill.
The Hornby class 58 set the standard for the modern day throw away motor we all know and love today?

I've 3 of the 58s in different liveries run nice and smooth the most recent had all its paperwork 1998 and it had never been used love um

How do I send you my class 33 for a touch of the magic in your hands?
Has anyone managed to upgrade their 58? I now have 16 and not one has enough power to pull a rake of 12 mgrs
Are those the same motors as Scalextric use in their cars? They look very familiar. Looks like someone's recreated BR's notorious Carpet Era 🤣
When you pull the wheels off I cringe. How do you restore them, do you glue them back on or is it an interference fit?
