  • The last time Magnus Carlsen lost to player rated around 2500 Elo was back in 2006 when he was just 16 years old. That's 17 years ago! In round 2 of the Qatar Masters Open 2023, Magnus not just lost his game to the 23-year-old Kazakh GM Alisher Suleymenov, but was completely smoked from the board. Check out this game along with the commentary of IM Sagar Shah to understand how exactly a player with a rating of nearly 300 points below Magnus could outwit him so thoroughly.

It was part of preparation for nf7
If we see carlsen game towards the queenside and
Sulemynov attack shifted from centre to kingside.

It looks like a roman army progression, the second move by Alisher two pawns in the center of the table sets up a strangle if not quickly counter attacked. But Magnus remained ignored it and let the strangle progress until alisher had too many pawns passed the center line. I think when anybody moves two center pawn +2 at beginning of the game (whatever opening that is called) you have deny that progress immediately or you end up backed against the back wall, which is what happened to Magnus. It's a rookie mistake by the world champion.

Chess is a very difficult game. Occasionally even the best get torn to shreds. In games with 300 point difference the lower rated player statistically wins about 1 out of 20 or 30. When I was an 1800=1900 tournament player I had some high 2100 scalps. In any event young 2500 GMs are capable of playing to well. I think part of what happened is that Magnus played too provocatively to avoid drawing a lower rated player. It happens.

Now cheaters are really good at it most of the times. Like if you go to a poker table in a casino and think you are sitting with a fair table, but there is a team at that table that acts like they don't know each other, and they know exactly how to move their cards, tap their chips, sigh, etc, all kinds of codes that they've practiced just to win your money, that sucks.

I think, Magnus totally overreacted with his quite direct accusations. In this game, he made several grave mistakes really very below his common playing standards. Alisher played really well but it was not out of this world. The sacrifices were not too magical and don't forget, that he's very young and his current ELO maybe not fully representative for his actual strength.
But on the other side, I generally understand Magnus' anger a bit about the fact, that the watch itself was allowed at all. I do not really know any current professional chess tournament, where this is allowed anymore. And by the way: Qatar, a recomendable place for lived human rights...

    • @ericastier1646

I think the biggest mistake is not to have immediately checked Alisher double pawns +2 opening. If you don't immediately counter those two first move it becomes like a press forward. That opening also forces the opponent into a game you have prepared in advance but Magnus did not respect the power of that opening and paid the price.

I'd say, Magnus made a blunder much earlier right at the beginning of the game by letting Alisher open up with two center pawns +2 without checking and breaking that. That opening generally leads to a morphy progressing like an army in line if none of the two center pawns is taken soon after, which is exactly what happened, Magnus did not respect the power of that opening and got strangled. It's easy to defend at the beginning but if let to progress it sets a whole dominance on the chessboard.

To think somebody is cheating on you just for wearing a watch is ridiculous. Magnus' worst problem is he thinks too highly of himself and tends to belittle his rivals all the time, so he can't accept that somebody at certain point can beat him. By the way, can anyone explain to me what is that connection in the base of the chessboard for?

Is this the way it is with most players ? No words at all . No go game, that was fun or no talking about the game at all just up and leave without saying a word ? If I was the best chess player in the world and I got beat by a lower ranking player I would at least say wow great game lets play again sometime . You did really good keep up the good work . This was probably the most exciting thing that has happened to the younger guy and for the other player to just get up and leave . I hope not everyone is like this after a GAME .

It's true that magnus totally accepts that the opponent played an amazing game and won fairly but the point is following the rules and more importantly if Magnus pointed that out and even told the Arbiter, Alisher could have just removed the watch and worn it back after the game. You can't blame either of them completely but yeah it might impact on how Alisher would be treated after this and Magnus Should have been careful of that.

Carlsen could simply kindly ask his opponent to remove the watch in a very moment when he spotted it. Proactive and assertive communication. Commenting it and emphasising the possibility of cheating AFTER his lost game is too late and it potentially degrades the victory and image of his oponent in the eyes of many.

The watch might be able to transmit winning moves and/or high frequencies or vibrations directly through the wrist. The Russians searched for an electronic device after Fischer beat Spassky. And the KGB used psychics and spies to battle against Korchnoi in his match against Karpov. 😮
