Vinegar is good but dont use it much cuz it ll eat the sealings. Also need to clean the intake and ventilation holes. The mainboard and all connection plugs inside need to protect from corrosion.Mine get shorted out luckly little burning smell but no damage.Clean it with wd40 make the plugs more waterproof and it works again.
If you have one that the vinegar just won't get clean..try oxalic acid (aka "wood bleach") and soak the parts in a solution of oxalic acid for several hours before checking. We also use this to clean the clear plastic holder on our whole-house water filter to like-new clarity.
I was reading up on that earlier this year, evidently it comes from rhubarb leaves or skunk cabbage. I’ve read it amazing at removing rust and bleaching wood. In the summer when the skunk cabbage is fully developed I would like to boil the leaves then concentrate it and see how well it works on rust compared to vinegar. From what I’ve read it’s a lot better.

Have you been using “tap” water? Or distilled?
And do keep us informed on how the pitted / rotted one is doing 👍🏼
What is your vinegar to water ratio?
