    Had the old version, sold it to help fund a move to GFX, however, I now have an X-T2 setup for more general rough and ready photography and have added the new version to my 16-55 and 50-140 for a weather sealed trinity. I also love the aperture ring hard stops and markings.

    Another good video Cris. Keep up the good work. The OIS button is useful on this lens. Its recommended to turn OIS OFF when mounting on a tripod. For an f4 lens, its a good candidate for swap between tripod vs hand-held. And the OIS button really made sense. Giving up the Made in Japan for a WR really dint make sense for me. Im gonna keep my Japanese original. Cheers !

    Nice video. Very helpful. To be honest, my expectations were pretty low because I knew the optical formula was the same between the two versions of this lens, but your attention to the little details made it worth the view.

    If you alway shoot on a tripod, you should always turn image stabilization off. If not the IS will add some shakes instead of removing it. IS only makes sense of you shoot by hand.

    • @cris_photography
      @cris_photography  3 года назад +2

      Never had a problem with that, if it works for you that’s good but I never added any shaking to my shots. Heard of it, never made a difference

    • @ThorDyrden
      @ThorDyrden 3 года назад +7

      The recent OIS can recognize, when the camera is on a tripod and consider it in their compensation-calculations.
      Also - if the OIS adds shakes to a stable camera it is not working properly... since holding the moving element stable should be simple (it must do the same, when you turn OIS off... off does not magically mechanically-fix the moving elements - it just tells the OIS "don't move")

    Real estate photographer checking in. I had the OG XF 10-24mm that I shot *a lot* of real estate with until I sold it to upgrade to the XF 8-16mm (pre-ordered at release) but here I am a few years later thinking about 'going back' to the new WR XF 10-24mm because I've realized that 10mm is more than wide enough & I'd actually much rather have the extra reach beyond 16mm in a single-lens kit for this purpose. The aperture ring is 100% the reason I'd buy the new version over the old version. Nothing like that tactile click & visual indication when shooting. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

      Update: bought the XF 10-24 f/4 WR & my 8-16mm is now up for sale. Super happy with the swap. Forgot just how great (and light by comparison) this lens is.

    I had the old version and sold it for the 16mm f1.4. Not exactly the same animal of course, but I had concerns about no WR and also did find the aperture ring to be annoying. Now I find myself wanting a bit wider than 16mm so I did order the newer model since Fuji fixed each of my concerns with the original. Can't wait to get out and use it. ...still did keep the 16mm f1.4 as that lens is all kinds of special.

    Thank you for sharing your experience!
    I’m an enthusiast, I love to take shots outside during trips (yeah not anymore unfortunately) and a couple of months ago I found myself in need of such wide lens. I own the 16-80 and I’ve always thought it was wide enough for me but I had to change my mind. For me It’s particularly interesting since both lenses share the same filter diameter and overall size!
    When the new 70-300 will eventually be released I really hope it will have the same 72mm thread. Just three lenses that cover a focal length from 10 to all the way up to 300 and more with the converters, all three sharing the same filters

    I was hoping to pick up a good deal on the older lens as people switched to the newer version. I shoot landscapes but in very mild conditions, so I really was not concerned about the weather resistance. I found a lot of people selling their old lenses for $500, so that's what I went with, but I was somewhat disappointed in the lack of overall sharpness. Maybe I just got a poor copy? My 18-55 and 50-230 are both sharp.

    Interesting, I swap to fuji in September and purchased the 10-24... 10days before the new version was announced.... Not being a professional photographer, don't think I need to be worried about not getting the latest upgrade. I already have much to learn with the older version.

    • @cris_photography
      @cris_photography  3 года назад +1

      Hey Stephane, thanks for watching. Honestly, you are not going to see that much of a difference between the first and the second gen. People that need that extra WR, the aperture ring and/or the OIS will, but that is definitely not a must, also because the optical image quality remains the same. I personally will keep my 1st gen lens as long as possible and keep rocking it. Take care!

  • @steveborghardt
    @steveborghardt Год назад

    Good Video - Quick question - why would you use OIS while using a tripod? - I always thought that while using a tripod stabilization should be off as it can sometimes introduce slight motion when using a stable tripod. Also - you cant get any more stable that a tripod so OIS is redundant at best, introducing slight motion at worst.

    • @cris_photography

    Aperture can be changed from rear dial on your camera body for mk1 10-24 so ring can be off, at least how i use it to avoid accidental changes.

    • @cris_photography
      @cris_photography  3 года назад +1

      True true l, but so are the ISO and shutter speed dials but it doesn’t change the fact that one of the main reasons for me to chose Fuji aside from the image quality is the layout, the accessibility and the design. Having to use a dial on the back feels like using a Sony or Canon camera. Sure “technically” speaking it changes nothing but I have a certain nostalgia towards dials on the lens itself.
      Thanks for stopping by and for proposing this alternative solution!

    • @cris_photography
      @cris_photography  3 года назад +1

      Hello Paul, thanks. No, I read that Fuji announced there is a detection when the lens (camera) is on a tripod to avoid that unwanted effect.
      In terms of shakiness on a windy day, I’d suggest to increase the shutter speed (and ISO as needed) and put some weight on the tripod central area or on the legs to stabilize the overall camera/lens setup.

      @@cris_photography hi Cris, thanks for your replay. The lens was in its original box and also inside a larger box with the original paper. I think the drop was from at least 1 Meter. Is It poissible that the drop causes disalignment between the lenses? I have tried it and everything seems to work. If I move the lens, something inside it moves too but I think it's the OIS. I have noticed that, after looking the focus point, if I change the aperture there is a low noise coming from the inside of the lens. Is it normal?

  • @jimmason8502
    @jimmason8502 3 года назад

    Just a question, how do you accidentally mistake f4 for f11? That's a whopping three stops more light lol.
    Also, I've read some reviews on both these lenses and seen a bunch of videos and nobody ever croons over the 10-24. Seems to get the job done, but is, meh. Be nice if Fuji could come out with a fast wide-angle prime like a 12mmf2.0

    • @cris_photography
      @cris_photography  3 года назад +1

      Did you ever shoot in aperture priority mode? Did you ever do so in a wedding for example? If so, you will know that sometimes you have to act fast and move around a lot. If I change the aperture by mistake due to an aperture wheel that is practically click less and that doesn’t show the aperture you’re on on the lens itself, you might have accidents since the ISO and shutter are in auto mode. That’s how you mistake f11 with f4... that is true for other disciplines as well. Cheers
