Just tried it with the dongle on the Evolve. Be aware it took a couple of minutes to find the satellites. Be patient. After that it worked well. Thanks Mike
Got my the GPS dongle the other day. Once I set it out side for a while to get a update fix (not unusual for a GPS that has been moved while turned off) it came up and I had a good lock with 6+ sats. Integrated with APRSIS/32 with no issues and provides me with an easy way to show a moving map when using my TM-D710 APRS radio for public service events (the D710 doesn't pass GPS data to the laptop). Thanks again for the pointer to this unit!
I was just looking for this exact thing and the next day you post this video! Awesome content! Perfect timing!
Mike. I had to go into the Device Manager to see that I had my first port was the GPS (port 7 vs port 8). Then I also had to go and set that port 7 for 19200 baud. Had it set on something else but BktTimeSync would not go any higher than that. Once I did that and enabled the GPS it started working. I am using Win10 as well. Again thanks Mike for your videos. Also got the GPS dongle today and got it working. Like you said, look for the GPS lock when it starts flashing Green. That took a while since I was inside. After that I got that working as well on the laptop I use my IC-706mkiig on. Again thanks and 73. Robert KD4YDC
While I had backup devices, the main navigation tool I used to bring a 70 foot fishing boat from Houma LA to Crescent City, CA via the Panama Canal, 36 days at sea, was a $10 GPS dongle and a laptop running OpenCPN on Linux.
Thanks Mike. I have had a USB GPS receiver that I got for the purpose to time sync my Windows computer and never got it to work. After watching your video I got it out, downloaded the software and it worked. See, you can teach an old dog new tricks😄
Thanks again
Steve, k7ofg
Nice Mike and yes for many different things you need accurate time to work. Thank you for sharing this app.
I have the same setup for my system. Sync over the internet in the shack and have the same USB dongle for out on the field. Works flawlessly! 73
Great video. You are killing it !
I am re-entering the hobby after a long layoff and am particularly interested in digital modes.
I feel like I will now be able to unlock a new level of my video game! Could you do a video on how to program a VCR remote? My grandkids are tired of coming over to take care of that for me. Thanks for the video, my dude! I Can't wait to try this out in the field
Thanks Mike for the tip. Even though I have a 705 (didn't know you could do this!), I have another setup that I also use sometimes that is not a 705. Just ordered the dongle via your link. Thanks a bunch! Robert KD4YDC
Thanks for the tip on the 705. I didn't know you could do that. I have one of those dongles and it receives enough satellites even plugged into a hub in my shack. But for the field, since we have a radio anyway, one could always just tune in WWV on one of its various frequencies and sync your time by just manually setting the time to sync with the tone on WWV. Just in case you do not have a 705 or the dongle or a phone with a GPS in it. de NY4I
Only drawback of the dongle is the size, I have mine on a 3 foot USB extension cable. Originally the dongle was blocking another open port which I needed for the radio.
Hai great creat content, the question works it also whit a ft-911 ?
Did you watch my 705 video :D
Hmm, I don’t know.
Cool stuff Mike
Is there anyway to do this with the IC-705 wirelessly? I don't use mine with the USB cable???
Be aware that U-blox has switched from using a COM port driver to using a sensor device driver on Windows. You may need to roll back to standard windows drivers to find the relevant COM port when using other radios.
How do I do that?
Nevermind, got it working. My Pi gets gps signal indoors... laptop doesn't. 73 VE3GKT
Q: Will this also set my grid square for WSJT-X POTA ?? What extra steps are needed?
It's not going to set it for you, you still need to do that manually, but it does show you what grid square you're in. In the column that shows your GPS coordinates, to the far right of that is a field that says WW locator. That is your grid square.
Will that dongle see the GPS satellites inside?
I can't speak for your whole house but as you can see in this video, I am inside.
Great channel! Thanks for all you effort!! N0YMA
