- Off Grid Ham Radio with Microsoft Surface Go and Icom IC-705. This is the Best data modes setup available to the portable ham radio operator today.
Hello Operators.
This is the next video in the Icom IC-705 series. This time we focus on the firmware update providing new wireless remote control functionalities, to this amazing SDR based QRP portable ham radio. In addition to my portable ham radio setup with the IC-705, we go through the accessories used to make portable data modes like WInlink, JS8Call, FT8, all easier at home and or while operating portable.
Finally, we'll discuss how the Icom IC-705 has changed the way we operate at home, and in the field.

Regarding the cage - I'd suggest taking a look at vendors like Small Rig - they make cages for video and audio producers.
You should be able to grab kit from them such as a "cheese plate" or a n "L-bracket" that would allow you for exammple to attach an AH-705. (or other 1/4-20 moutnable kit) and mount the whole shebang on a tripod.
Small Rig and other vendors in the same market also make things like cable clamps which can be used to make sure cables don't disconnext themselves and provide strain relief. Most of the stuff they make won't be useful, but they have generic items, such as the cable clamps, that will potentially be of use if you are using that style of cage - especially with the increase of use of 1/4-20 and the already common use of 3/8 threaded components in the Ham world. Another generic item that might be useful is that they make quick detach based carrying handles, which could reduce the profile of the kit in transit but only take a couple of seconds to attach when required. Some ingenuity and imagination will be involved, but I am fairly certain some utiility can be obtained using bits from components intended to support nad connect video kit.
Personally if I buy once of those cages - and I am seriosuly considering the options for those and other protection for my 705, - I will ultimately be aiming to buy two, so I can have one at the rear as well - probably attached by a cheese plate.
Another thing I am looking at is the power systems designed for video kit. E.g. battery packs intended to use common Sony NP style batteries and "V mount" batteries.
May I ask you a question?
I would like to hear a proper shout-out for the DX Commander in future videos! I saw it there on your picnic table and didn't hear it, so thought I might say that here♡ love me some DX Commander!!
Thanks, luv :)
The absent GPS COM port is a BIG BIG oversight by Icom. I'm glad you covered it because I thought I simply didn't know how to set it up. Thankfully, my touchpad has a built-in GPS.
@@wild-radio7373 I'm only using the DX Commander Expedition Pole which is absolutely brilliant. Ever since I got it, I seen no need for the sotabeams masts I've used previously. The DX Commander antenna systems themselves are not really practical for man portable work at this latitude. They don't work at all portable in the winter. As an antenna system which is going to be up for a while, they're brilliant. Quarter wave vertical is always awesome. There's just too much finger fiddling to set it up portable. I've given feedback to Calum about possibly introducing a half wave version of the D X Commander. That would reduce the number of wires, but maintain the multiband functionality. The responses on that feedback arr always kind of strange, so I don't know how to take them. Like I said though, the poles are awesome and the full antenna systems are brilliant for home installations.
@@richardcernava4139 agreed Richard. I was really disappointed by that. I've almost completed a report which I'll send to Icom. Hopefully it doesn't get lost inside that big company
Your innovation and leadership with operating in the field is second to none.
Here's why:
Average ham: zero interest in these digital/data modes, primary interest is hugely amplified ragchewing and the latest expensive rig
Prospective hams: young people who would be interested in all the digital/data but don't know it exists because the only encounter they have with a ham is an old man that shows them you can have a voice conversation with some yahoo by spending thousands of dollars, when the young person can talk to someone on the other side of the world, including video, with a free app on their phone.
What Julian is doing is in that gap between where ham is and where it could be, so, existing hams go to videos about 200w rigs and a prospective ham, a young digital native, would simply never discover this stuff because there's zero interest in talking to old men with more money than skill
I have been consuming endless hours of HAM RUclips and am completely transfixed by this channel...
I'm a 37yo Father of two and a prospective ham. I have to say, I only understand about half of what he says, but it's cool as F#!
@@pthithic Nailed it, there are also few who seem to understand formating and flow of a video for the platform.
I love my old salts who are full of knowledge on here... but their videos feel more like the archaic VHS instructional videos of the past than a RUclips video. Julian has nailed his video flow and style.
Outstanding video as usual. You’re one of the few channels that I drop everything to watch.
Julian - this combination of the IC-705 and Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is so compelling that I am now focused on reconfiguring my shack, and ultimately thinking of a home station and field station as you have advocated. This is great stuff! Thank you for all the hard work that went into this and all of your extremely well done videos!!
I stuck with you, and happy I did. Love my IC-705, such a blast to own and use. Rock and roll Julian
I just found the video page. Instantly became my favorite. No BS just valid info!
Also, I was just in Finland and realized as I was leaving is I was in your backyard essentially. Love your videos.
This is excellent information and is causing me to rethink my intention of using the Raspberry Pi and the IC-705. I will continue to re-watch this to ensure that I have understood all I need to do.
Utmost Respect for you and your contributions. Thank you.
Whoa! Voice modes remote is legit amazing! Great video and thank you for continually refining your system.
Honestly, that was a blast. It isn't well described in the documentation, so I thoguht, lets just give it a try :D
Glad I did, and happy you enjoyed it.

Julian, Excellent presentation as usual! You’ve inspired me to go off-grid this summer. I’ll spend a 4 day weekend in the Pennsylvania wilds with pretty much your setup operating digi-modes.
ICom contract with this guy he knows his craft!
Outstanding! Keep things as simple as you can. Pennsylvania is a beautiful state once you get outside the cities. You'll have a wonderful time for sure.

BRAVO Julian ! I enjoy operating POTA and SOTA plus, Winlink VARA. Being able to operate from the Field without the nest of wires is the next evolution in portable and emergency operations. I once wondered if the 705 was worth it's rather pricy entry point but was looking solely from the perspective of operating voice and CW, something my Xiegu does quite well and at 20 Watts. Your well documented and thoroughly explained data operations shed new light on the true utility of the entire kit. Thank you so much!
Julian your an awesome operator and when I see a new vid from you I am excited to view, your presentation and explanation is logical, clear and straight forward. Honestly you have inspired me over and over renewing my interest. Thanks, 73
Outstanding! Your video is a delight. Thank you!
I really appreciate and enjoy your work and time spent helping noobs like me.
Great to see all you share!

Excellent. What a journey this has been. ;-)
GREAT Series on the 705, Julian !! Thanks again !! It's unfortunate that when l tried to order the RS-BA1ver2, no US vendor had it in stock and Icom was not giving them a delivery date. So I ordered from a Japanese eBay supplier. Hope I receive it sometime this year. 73, Terry W4ZQ
You won me over with this. Great video.
After watching this video i decided to get the Surface Go 2... 128gb ssd 8 gigs of ram and i added a 256gb sd to run apps from. I love this thing. It has the M3 processor so it is pretty snappy. Thank you for all the videos you do.
You are very welcome.

Hi Julian. That setup has to be the gold standard for off grid radio deployment. The amount of research and testing you do is way beyond anything anyone else is doing right now. And I thank you for your tireless commitment to the subject, and for bringing it to us all here.
Unfortunately the commercials around the IC-705 mean I probably wont be getting one anytime soon, so I'll have to get by with the IC-706MkiiG and the RPI, or my Lenovo laptop, and a bunch of cables. Now that my ankles prevent me going man portable my setup includes my 32Ah battery box and solar panel, or a small generator. I'm going camping again with friends next weekend so I'll be taking my portable station and will be doing some POTA via JS8Call. Should be fun as I've not used the mode for some time, and I've never used it for POTA. However due to the conditions and weekend contesters running lots of power conditions for POTA aren't great right now. I'm hoping that by using a digital mode I'll cut through the contest noise, and being where I will be, there will be little background/domestic RF noise, so incoming signals will be booming in, as they say.
Keep safe Julian, and maybe we can have a QSO next weekend.

Great explanation. Sold, Sold, Sold! Thanks for the great video.
Outstanding information! Many thanks 🙏👍🏻🤘🏻😎
Can’t wait to hook up my surface to it now. Thanks

this was a fantastic video!!! one day i will make it this far. I have come a long way since february 2021.... learned many things....many of those things learned have been thru your content.
that is a great explanation, glad i found this video and channel
Absolutely outstanding Sir!
Great Video. I have pretty much based my entire portable ops on your setup and this ultimately was the last piece of the jigsaw for how I want to go wireless data. Hope to work you portable some day and thanks for the excellent content and information 73 Mike M0VOZ
Hi Julian thanks for this, esp the info on the real world hamradio processing power of the surface go
Wonderful video and Information. Respect and Ty^^
Another great video. I wish I had more experience as a ham and had the confidence to use QRP. Just not ready to go this route quite yet. Looks like the perfect setup for what you do.
Love your channel. Thanks for all the info
🙏
Great information and explanation! Really appreciate your time and effort 73.
Glad it was helpful! Trying to add context makes these types of videos tough to sit through, but hopefully useful ultimately.

Great video. I'm running a Surface Pro 7 and a G90 and it works really well.
Excellent video. Very well produced and the video cutting is outstanding! Interesting with the Surface solution, I'm using a smaller GPD MicroPC, smaller and with built in keyboard but no touch screen.
This is awesome.Great cross wire jungle to free wireless world ;) I appreciate Icom that has heard users. Snapper is great Super with these field tests.
I love technology. This setup is brilliant
Outstanding, thanks for the the video.
You're very welcome 👍
Thanks for the video.
As always, a wonderful video! I absolutely concur that the icom software needs to present the 2nd usb interface for the GPS connection. I was just complaining about that earlier today. I'm looking into using the inexpensive GPS that I have on the RPi with a USB2->USBC OTG cable to get the GPS signal onto the Surface Go2
I think you are an awesome source for knowledge! I am thinking about getting into HAM. I wished I had a compact list of all I need to do HAM, send texts, and email. Meaning hardware and software. I like the look of the IC-705. This video gave me a lot of what I'm looking for.
Love your videos very informative. Great radio and the surface go 2 paired together rocks! Thanks for doing these videos
Thank you Wendy

Outstanding presentation, thank you
You are very welcome, thanks for watching.
Incredible video.
Excellent review
I use RS-BA1 on 7300 and 9700..on my surface pro 4.. Remember you also have CW keyer built-in, u could run a cw beacon..
Icom do make better Radios, well done on an informative 👏 video
Great vid, buddy,
I have been thru all this and agree 100% - I'm using a Dell XPS-13 because it's what I had free. All works perfect now that I change the the settings as advised in the video. I do have problems with intermittent disconnects from WiFi when using the IC-705 as an access point. Thanks for all the GREAT Work. 73's Dan ~ KC4GO
Great to hear! I also had the connection drop outs. I found the wifi adapter was going to sleep in certain battery power profiles, when WIndows thought I didnt need it :D I was related to the "turn off the screen" timeout. Please give that a try.

Julian oh8stn
Great work, Julian! Many thanks!!
I'm tempted now to cancel my TX-500 backorder in favor of the 705 which is, for the moment, in stock (I could pick it up today).
If GNU/Linux didn't suck for photo printing, I'd only have a Windows VM for those things, like firmware upgrades, where manufacturers simply won't get away from Microsoft. I can deal with the Surface in this case, though. 73, KN6NPZ
When I was a kid I built a heath kit radio and broadcasted through my neighbors record players..... we never had anything like this. Haha. Nice setup
We have certainly come a long way.

It actually is quite amazing Steve. That's part of the reason for getting this video out there. In a sense, it sets a benchmark. Thank you for watching, and for the kindness. It's very much appreciated

I think this video has helped me decide on getting the 705 over the lab599... Or maybe ill get both, but the 705 first! Thank you for the great content, please continue the great work.
I want to first say congratulations on accomplishing your long term goal of a completely wireless transceiver and computer portable Portable Digital Radio setup. I know this was a long term goal of the channel and am so happy for you.
I would say that from a cost prohibited standpoint that your solution maybe at the higher end.
I currently use the Raspberry Pi 4 because it's cost effective and totally inspired by you. I have the Larkbox Pro and haven't used it for much since I have no idea how to adjust the audio levels in Windows 10 so I can receive data for programs such as Winlink, JS8Call, WSJT-X, Fldigi, etc. I can easily do this on the Pi but in typical Microsoft fashion this simple task is overcomplicated on Windows 10.
Would love to be able to use Winlink Express and Vara HF but this is a limiting factor for me.
I would say you should recommend the Larkbox Pro as a more affordable options as a Windows Raspberry Pi than starting with the route suggested in the video. Lots of commitment for an expensive 5 Watt Radio.
This is my opinion and I respect your work. Hopefully there won't be any hard feelings.
73 de KC1MIJ
Thanks for this. I probably should have mentioned it in the video but oh, honestly the video was getting too long. The Lark box Pro is not forgotten. It's one step in the series. We'll be using the larkbox pro for the winlink Gateway project coming up. The problem is, I can only do one thing at a time. I really suck at multitasking :-) but don't worry, the larkbox pro is on the way.
Finally, thanks for watching, for the support and for the kindness. It is very much appreciated.

Very informative.
I like the idea of the surface with a radio. I am not a windows fan but it appears to have the best options for control & functionality. I had already been wondering about a windows tablet to program my Anytone 878 DMR radio with. Thanks for the video. 73 de KI5HXM
Very informative, thanks! I will definetely try now something similar with my ‘705 and my mini laptop Win10 PC! Just one thing, I’ve tried the GPS2time and it was not running well on my setup. So now I use the BktTimeSync by IZ2BKT and it runs flawless! 73! Stay safe! Linas LY2H
WOW. Very tempted. And as an owner of a KX3, I know what you mean by "all those cables." Even more if you have the band display.
Excellent
Thanks fot the video!

Jeezus Middle of May & there’s still snow there? Great vid as usual.
It's almost all gone now. Thanks for the comment and kindness.
Nah thanx for your outstanding contributions to the hobby. One of the few YT channels I check daily.
I am closely watching the WoR project (windows on raspberry pi) and waiting for the WIFI drivers to become operational… it seems only a matter of time. Once that happens I feel like the raspberry pi hardware will be perfect for my setup. I agree that VARA is no joke and is a reason to switch from Linux. Great video, thanks for everything you do… 73 de KD2TJU
Such a great review, Shows the power of the presenter and there deep knowledge and unbiased view. Tied of reading shallow reports by uninformed goons. This radio is another game changer like the 7300 was. I have a MS Suface and an S7 so guess whats next. Thanks for the great show Pete VK3TQ / VK2LD
Excellent video Julian, i have to agree with Simon Mitchell!!
Simon Mitchell?
Yes he posted a comment 3 months ago , you are a brilliant on your videos ! Always gave us a honest review with your experience on the field!!

Thank You Phillip. It's always work in progress.

Thanks Julian, this is another fantastic piece of work and is something one will refer back to repeatedly. The only bummer regarding the ensemble is that PowerFilm is not shipping the LightSaver Max out of the continental US until autumn, at the earliest. 73
Agreed. I've been working hard to make this happen but it's still slow going. Definitely going to happen though and we already know the distributor it's happening with. I wish I could do more to make this happen sooner.
Great review. A big question I had was Windows OS vs Raspberry Pi for portable ops. I wanted all the interoperability and capabilities of the Windows machine but portability and low power consumption of the Raspberry Pi. Really happy to hear the Surface Go is less. I am willing to carry a little more weight and size. Less wires and devices means less to lose, break, fail etc for me. You settled it for me. As always, awesome info.
Just read you blog as well. So the LSM with the J-go 45w USB charger will provide enough power to charge the IC-705 on stand by and a Surface Go? Your blog said 15v @5A and the Surface only needs 3A? That sound right?
That might be a type O. It might also be the maximum capabilities of the J go Tech USB C charger. The LSM outputs 12 volts. I simply split that output into two separate Anderson power-pole connections, one for the ic-705, the other for the J go Tech. This works perfectly together 👍
Love your videos Julian. They’ve inspired me to find was to make my station more effective while in the field. So question regarding the 705 and required software. Have you tried the WFviewer in place of the ICom software? Everything I’ve seen, read and watched claims its capable of running the wireless data modes on the 705 without the hefty price tag of the icom software. Thanks again for all you’re doing.
Great video. Also going to change over from Raspi 4 to Surface Pro. Just had enough of too many wire connections and buggy software on Raspi.
You'll be much happier Robin, for sure.

Nice setup. And a great channel 👍.
I'd like to know: What are the specs of your Go2. it seems there are different type (processor and memory)
EDIT: Excuse my stupid question, you did a great job in your Blogs. All my questions got answered there. You really went the extra Mile. Chapeau. Great Job. Excellent work.
Danke für das Video
Julian, as always a great video. I think it's important to talk about the differences between the Surface Go 2 & Go 3. A lot of operators will be looking at the Go 3 since that's what Microsoft currently offers. But the Go 3 has a major flaw/issue; the battery life as compared to the Go 2 is awful. Microsoft really dropped the ball on what is otherwise a neat little package for off-grid use. I've used the Go 2 at work and tested it a good bit with the 705 on digital modes. Performance and battery life were actually pretty good - a solid 4 hours of continuous operation on a full charge (and this on a device that was already over a year old). Based on this experience I bought a Go 3 for my own use with the 705. At first the battery life was so bad (about 2.5 hours max) I thought I had a lemon, but in doing research I found out that Microsoft's claim of 'all day battery life' is wildly optimistic, and practical use time is measured at just a few hours even when running lightweight tasks like web surfing. Stories of Go 3 battery issues are all over the internet. My Go 3 is the Pentium Gold 6500Y version with 8 GB or RAM. The performance of this model tested out very close to the top end i3 model, but at a much lower price. Performance is actually very good, and I'd be delighted with it if it wasn't saddled with a lousy battery. My advice to your viewers - look for a good used example of the Go 2. You'll be much happier.
Great work as always. Now if Icom would just release a version of the 705 with 100W on HF it would be truly worthy successor to the IC706MKIIG for those of us who are limited to vehicle ops in the great outdoors. ;-)
Interesting timing; I just discovered WoAD for Android and have gotten it working with my Samsung tablet and Kenwood TH-D74 over Bluetooth for VHF/UHF packet Winlink for wireless operations in the field (we have several VHF and a UHF RMS node in my area). 73 Randy KAØAZS
I believe ICOM and others are going to include this capability in lots of future transceivers.
well, you made my mind up for me. :) 705 it is. :)
Currently running a Flex 1500 / PowerSDR on my Surface Pro 3. I will have to try out the power adapter.
The Flex rigs seems very nice. Have not had one yet, but perhaps some day.
Here is a blog post I wrote about the adapter.
oh8stn.org/blog/2021/04/19/powerfilm-lightsaver-max-microsoft-surface-charging-off-grid/
I've used my 705 like this for a bit, but I much prefer using a single usb cable for a couple of reasons.
1 WSJT-X has a seizure when you change the frequency with the radio, and not the software, and the only way to fix it is to restart the remote software entirely. Something to do with how the remote software handles unexpected cat data coming back from the radio.
2 Using USB gives you access to the GPS receiver on the 2nd serial port. Saves having to carry around an extra GPS dongle.
3 Using both the control software and other cat software doesn't work well, so you have to use one or the other.
4 The RS-BA1 software is sooo expensive. In the UK you can only buy it with the remote VFO included which pushes it up over £200. So I bought mine from Ebay from potentially a dodgy source, because Icom doesn't sell the software separately.
Still, it's nothing major, and using it wirelessly is fine, as long as you use the dial lock, just in case something nudges it, and for situations where you have the radio in a peli case, protected from the elements with external connections mounted on the case, then using WIFI is great. But for me, sat in a car on a hill, I could take it or leave it.
Certainly can't complain though, it's handy for those times where you want to be wireless :)
5. using USB cable you can still use your phone as an Internet access point.
I was using a mcHF SDR trasncever for years, using just one USB connector for Audio and CAT.
Your Dog is So Cute 🥰
Thanks!
Just left Chameleon Antennas in Sparks NV, went in for 1 thing, came out with a armada of gear😂 Have a duplicate of your setup in the video now. Thanks for all the awesome videos!
I just ordered a MS Surface Go 3 on sale today. I am planning to use it with an Icom 705 which I have not yet purchased but will very soon. I want to do Winlink and FT8 with this rig. I keep wanting to add 100 watts to this rig but waiting on an amp...a two year wait...sad Thanks for the video.
Here's something to keep you engaged while you wait for your Surface oh8stn.org/blog/2021/10/10/microsoft-surface-go-2-faq-ham-radio-laptop/
Looks real nice, how long would this system work without charging all the pieces. The other thing is the cost, in Canada the IC-705 is worth $1800 not counting all the other thing required.

Do you find that the Surface Go 2 is powerful enough or would you go with the Surface Pro 7 with the i7 processor? Would you upgrade or have you upgraded the memory to 8GB in the Go 2?
The type A USB port is nice in the Pro 7 and it is a much more powerful computer, plus the larger screen, but it is almost 2.5 times the price. Curious about your experience with the Go 2 and it's visibility..
Thanks for the great posts,
Phil
Another excellent informative video Julian. What is the make and model of the microphone you are using??
Thanks 🙏
The mic is Rode VideoMic Me.
This is one of the very reason why I like the Japanese Brands Radios because They have very High Quality Product's and lot's of Invocations to There Products, unlike the Pool Quality Chinese Brands, that ten to Copy the Japanese Brands! I have a Alinco DJ-MD5X DMR and a Yeasu FT5D HT, and also have a HP Mini Tablet and a Samsung Laptop,
Completely agree with you. The Japanese have this attention to detail we don't see from other countries. Thanks for the comments and for watching, greatly appreciated.
Watching this, I'm thinking about: cold weather, and the impact on battery life.
Keep the IC-705 somewhere protected, and reasonably warm. Then use a small tablet, or even a phone, with a WiFi connection back to the transceiver. Keeping a small device close to your body means the battery will stay warm, and last longer. You could even carry a battery pack (at the expense of another thing to carry, and another cable).
That just leaves the issue of getting appropriate software for the phone, to control the transceiver.
Have you explored using the free wsview in lieu of the rs-ba1 Icom v2 software? I’d also love a more detailed video showing your wiring for the radio and surface and solar. I’m exploring how to do that with my 12aH LiFePo4, Surface Go 1, and 60W solar to be used in the field. Thanks de AI3W, Rick
Wsview has latency problems I couldn't reconcile. Ultimately it was easier and more fruitful for me to use the RS-BAT1v2 and Ivom remote utility.
Regarding the solar with the surface, we're just coming out of the dark season. Give me a month or so, and I'll publish an excellent video on the Surface, PF 60w panel, and LiFePO4 battery.
What protective case are you using with the Surface Go?
Great video, thanks. Is there a peer to peer secure option for emergency communication between 2 users on HF?
Sure. For email Winlink P2P.
For chat and file transfer Vara chat. For keyboard to keyboard chat js8call. For voice and text ION2G.

Hi Julian! Can't believe I am just now watching this video. Your setup is amazingly slick! 2 years after, do you still like the Surface, or have you moved on to another computer?
Thanks for another informative and fun video!

Great video, inspiring, thank you.
You say the wifi in the IC-705 is good, however I am getting median ping times from the IC-705 to my home wifi router of about 189ms just a few feet away from the router. What ping times are you getting from your IC-705 over wifi to the tablet?

You already know you have a winner of a companion in Snapper. However, I think she needs her own call sign!
I'll work on that 👍
Thank you for the video, the setup looks very cool. Any particular reason why you went with the Surface Go 2 rather than a rugged tablet (like the Dell Latitude 12 7220 Rugged Extreme), other than maybe cost?
Simple reasons. I wanted to be able to charge it with USB C PD. I needed extremely low current consumption. The weight was also a consideration. Finally, I wanted it to be as thin as possible. Those rugged latitudes are pretty freaking amazing though. I might pull the trigger on one later for overlanding the car
@@OH8STN Thank you for the reply, that makes sense.
I really enjoy and appreciate the way you present and impart knowledge
Thank you
