    I have had a lemon tree from Four Winds for about 10 years in a container. I moved, put it outside for the summer and chickens dug it completely out of the pot while I was at work one day! The tree didn't survive. The point is, I bought a three year old tree, the tree came in fantastic shape, had blooms on it already, fruited very soon after I got it and I was enjoying full sized lemons within the year. I averaged about 15-30 lemons per year for the rest of the time I had it. I highly recommend Four Winds for your citrus plants! ...and listen to every word they have to say!
    P.S. I live where I had to have it inside most of the year. It was so uplifting when those wonderful smelling flowers started blooming when we were usually still knee deep in snow.

    • @musabbir1
      @musabbir1 Год назад

      I live in an area where the plant will be inside for a significant part of the year. While these are listed as self-fertile, do you not need insects for pollination? What did you do when the plants started flowering while inside your house?

    I too am a fan of Four Winds Growers! I have bought 3 varieties of kumquat and an Omari Satsuma mandarin from them, all relatively cold hardy since I live in the high desert of SoCal in USDA zone 8b. All arrived in excellent condition, and the company has been great at customer service too, for instance when an avocado I ordered in premium size was not ready to ship in time last year due to weird weather.

    Best potted citrus video I’ve seen. You talk a lot about the soil and drainage and how to prepare it and why. This is probably the most critical part of growing healthy potted plants so I really appreciate this info. Also you talk about fertilizing. I really struggle with my potted citrus and after watching several videos I’m still not sure why my citrus drop leaves, yellow and get brown spots.

    What are you thoughts on growing citrus (or any other type of fruit tree) in grow bags?

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  3 года назад +6

      Hello Mozzeyy 👋 Grow bags are great for increasing aeration for healthy root development & reducing the common issue of root bound & coiled roots; however, grow bags result in faster loss of moisture to the rootball/ soil & require closer attention to watering schedule. Let me know what you decide, and share your growing successes!

    Awesome video! Any tips for dealing with potting soils that end up drying to the point that they no longer absorb water? I live in Los Angeles and am pretty good about keeping my potted plants watered, but sometimes (seemingly overnight!) I will go to water one of my plants and it seems as though the soil doesn't absorb any of the water and it just flows through the pot.

    The topic of watering, I live in a cold climate 6B, and stuck to the "let them dry out" method before watering, but if you want fruit, water daily!!!!!! Ive lost so many buds because the plant was drying out. My recommendation in the summer and the plant is flowering is to water heavily once a day. JMHO.

Severely root bound. I pruned the roots and fed it. No signs of transplant shock. The tree is at least 6ft in its pot. Will it ever produce lemons or is it just ornamental for life?

    I have a problem with red ants inside my citrus containers. Do I need to worry about them?

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  3 года назад +2

      Hello David, Ants 🐜 can certainly be an issue to citrus as they often farm aphids & scale to the detriment of the plant. A Neem oil drench (read the product label for directions) can suppress the ant population. Another suggestion was just emailed to me by a friend that had an ant population that harmed his citrus, and here’s how he solved the issue in a very natural way:
      “I picked up three hard, black plastic tubs (about 28" diam and roughly 8" tall) at a local lawn and garden store.
      I filled each of them with about 1 inch of water, placed a drip saucer for each of the containers in each tub and then sat the citrus containers in them!
      It has worked perfectly ever since and no way the ants can cross to get to the containers!!! And, NO MORE SCALE.
      Just wanted to let you know. Ants certainly are a problem and can, in most cases, find a way to get 'aboard'! But not in this scenario.” Al

    Adding both vermiculite and perlite to the same mix is non-sensical as they have opposing functions - perlite helps drainage and vermiculite absorbs and retains moisture. Plus peat moss retains moisture and eventually decomposes. Additionally peat has been extensively over farmed for decades and is now banned in some European countries as its no longer sustainable. Coir is an alternative. Your better option is loamy soil mixed with sand for drainage. Excessive organic material in soil, especially in containers, is a poor choice.

    Hey look. This is a citrus tree on vigorous rootstock- mine are on trifoliata- not an ancient bonsai. It will grow as long as you don't do anything stupid.

    You guys spend too much on fertilizers. I just use my urine, diluted 1:3 every week.

    I always use peat. I know that the truth is that we are not harvest enough to have an effect kn the eco system. The amount we harvest annually is renewed within a year since it such a small amount verse the total. This isnt my opinion iys the opinion of the experts that study peat bogs in canada. Also, igs doesnt have toxins like cocoir does, nor the the cost to ship cost as much plus its wild organic. Ill stick with peat becuase I know the myth of it being damaging to the envirment isnt accurate. Plus its regulated so its not over harvested. Yhe day that would happen maybe decades away if regulation wasnt policy.

    Your soil is within 1/2 inch to the top. No room for water and mulch. Bad example of planting.

    I would never use peat, the environmental cost of harvesting it is huge. You’re talking about destroying a mossy ecosystem that is ancient and an incredible carbon sink. If you care about the environment use organic compost, home made, even better. Other than that, great advice, thank you 🙏
