How come every time I open a video about mestizos and mestizas on RUclips, I see a lot of Filipinos posting hateful comments? If you're not mestizo and are proud of being brown skinned then good for you. Don't go hating on fairer skinned Filipinos for having Spanish or foreign blood. It's not their fault that they have the skin color that is deemed desirable by society. Mestizos and mestizas also have the right to celebrate their culture and heritage like everyone else. Attacking other people because of their skin color or posting disgusting comments will not change how society thinks. Change starts from YOU. Better yet, educate yourself and acquire good manners and right conduct. SMH

These mestizos need to recognize their UNDUE privilege and usually is at the expense of the indigenous peoples. And these mestizos NEVER called out, but participated in the oppression of indigenous people. Their European ancestors enslaved and stole lands from the natives but they REFUSE to recognize this and ANY of their privilege.

@@shahanibraga7498 So is the mentality that only brown Filipinos are the "real Filipinos"...you sit the fuck down. I am not stating my opinions to make you feel good about yourself or to suit your ego. Part of the reason why Hispanic superiority exists because brown skinned people still think that fairer is better. If brown-skinned people stop thinking that way then the illusion of Hispanic superiority will vanish.

@Yr Kim Exactly! I still feel discrimination and suffer from stereotypes even though I'm mestizo. Many brown-skinned people do and say hateful things to me based on my skin color. Whether they do it out of jealousy r racism I don't know. We all experience bad things from other people.

Exactamundo, Pilipinos has a lot to be proud of . We R the friendliest, happiest most welcoming people on the planet. We accept everybody without judgement nor prejudiced. We accepted Vietnamese and Lebanese refugees, Russian refugees, and Jewish refugees during their time of need at the outset and during the heights and horror of WW2 , when practically the whole world shut their doors on them. The Philippines showed we R willing to help people when they R down no matter what. For a country that has experienced it's share of War, invasion and horror from more powerful countries with imperialist tendencies, we never lost our sight of who we were, a proud, brave and resilient people. As a true born and bred Pinoy, I would be proud of my country till the day I die.

Many of the photos are from the Manila Carnival. Just wanna share that before the miss universe and other int'l. beauty pageants created there's already a beauty pageant here in the Philippines called the Manila Carnival (1903-1939) which was like an annual parade of beauty to celebrate the "friendship" of the US and the Philippines. The two countries have their own representative the oriental beauty (filipina) and the occident/western beauty (american). So yeah, even before the filipinos love pageants.

The word mestizo was only a classification in the Philippines for people who belonged to the upper society. It was only used before for Filipinos with Spanish blood. These Filipinos can be a Filipino native, Filipino-Chinese, or a Filipino-Indian. The problem is that today the word mestizo has been misused and misunderstood. Now Filipinos think that the word mestizo is only for people with fairer skin which is incorrect. Eso es lo que pasa cuando dejan de hablar español; empiezan a utilizar mal términos sencillos.

Fun fact: Mestizo is a racial classification, not a skin color. It is misconstrued in the Philippines that the term Mestizo is only for light skinned Filipinos. Not true. So nostalgic that I reminisce the past. I was already aware a a young child during the early 60's that my family and social circle were 1st to 3rd generation western mix predominantly Spanish. We had trunkful of memorabilia letters, postcards and sepia photos going back to the late 1800's and mostly written in Spanish. It was so common a physical feature to the eyes of a child that I thought everyone else were all the same mestizo type. Nowadays, most of my family are either long dearly departed or have migrated overseas and so did my close associates and friends. It took a while during my formative years to see and distinguish the subtle difference in the diverse demography of Philippine society. Filipinos are so widely diverse that the spectrum of mix blood types create very beautiful individuals especially the present generation nowadays where both West-East and East-East mix mestizos now proliferate. The future of a modern Filipino society will be mixed-blood wether we like it or not. What is important though is that everyone from whatever ancestry embraces the Filipino identity that distinctly distinguishes them across the World.

***** The real people of these Islands like myself dont worship traders like the spanish or chinese traders and we dont accept them cause they are not part of my original culture. If your part this part that thats what you are, you part of those ethnic races you mentioned. People should stop implementing those other ethnics part of my culture cause thats not what my people are!! For instance if your part mexican part chinese does that mean all mexicans are part mexican part chinese? If your part brazilian part japanese does that mean all brazilians are part brazillian part japanese? And should they be part of there original culture? Absolutely not!! I know my people they have round eyes and beautiful smile. My family go back 20 generations and when I look at my family and friend picture album non of them have any spanish or chinese in them. Even though my grandfather was spanish I dont consider myself spanish I consider myself as being FILIPINO ONLY. True people of my country would never give in to another race why should we? LAPU LAPU our national HERO killed ferdinand Magellan a portuguese and killed most of his spanish soldiers in the battle of Mactan island why would my people worship the spanish while we defeated them? My people slaughterd over 100.000 chinese and be-headed them cause they were trying to take over my country why would my people bow down to them? Does that make sense to you? I think so!! People who are destroying my culture are foreigners they will invent and LIE about anything to sabotage my culture & people thats why the whole world hate my country!! As far as the chinese there MOTTO IS once we contaminate you with our Chinky blood we will invade you!!

The truth is most Spaniards who came to the Philippines are from Andalucia, Basque Region, and Madrid. Greeks from Malta, as well as Italians from Sardinia, arrived with them; then French from Gibraltar and Camargue migrated to the Philippines too and the Portuguese settled in many provinces too. These people started to call themselves “FILIPINOS.” They wanted to break away from the power of the KING OF SPAIN. Only those “Castilians, Argentinians and Mexicans are loyal to the king during that time.” They studied and learned all the native dialects in the country; they mixed the Spanish creoles “Ermiteño and Basque Caviteño” with the local dialects and created the “TAGALA” known as TAGALOG. The Native locals of the country were called “ INDIOS.” They thought they were similar with the Incans, Aztecs, and Pacific Islanders.” Governor Narciso Claveria not only imposed the Spanish Names but FORCE ALL OF THESE EUROPEANS TO INTERMMARY WITH THE LOCALS. NOLI ME TANGERE explains that the “MODERN FILIPINOS are a mixture of EUROPEANS, LATINOS, AND ASIANS.”

Yes, Indeed, sa amin kasi its look like na sa lola ko nalang at lolo ko nlng yung huling linage ng mistizo at mistiza, although si mama at mga kapatid nga may na kuha kahit papano pero di na sapat para tawagin kang mistizo.

Interesting to watch and read. Being born in the Philippines and being multi-cultural made many very educational experiences, I now realize. I lived in the Philippines and Hawaii growing up. I do remember being ridiculed and called a zebra but I didn’t care. My latest experience was at 7-11 in Hawaii. The cashier was speaking Ilocano and unbeknownst to him, I understood every word. Well, let’s just say the words were not kind and his statement was directed at me. After the 7-11 cashier finished his rant, I turned to look around to see if perhaps he was directing his statement to someone behind me or around me. No one but me stood before him. I responded back, not in English but Ilocano. I was given a 20 minute history lesson from the 7-11 manager who said I was not Filipino but a Spaniard. She said pure or real Filipinos are from Manila. I asked this manager where she was from in the Philippines and she responded,”Manila”. Next I asked her what her maiden/surname was and she responded, “Santos and before that was Fernandez”. UNDERSTOOD!
