I feel sad for those people, died thinking philippines have great future.
HUHUH oo nga😢
Underrated
But they are right since duterte took the seats.
yep philippines sucks
Philippines can have a great future..
If some of it's people stopped being ignorant, selfish and undisciplined
Some Filipinos forgot what discipline is..
I've noticed that with every country in the world, our ancestors used to dress more smartly and have more pride in their appearance. Classy and stylish despite social class.
Indeed
Do keep in mind documentaries like always show the presentable parts of a country. You will see the same for documentaries showcasing other countries like Australia and the US similarly.
IKR.. nowadays we dress like peasants.

1930s was the Golden Era of the Philippines. Manila along with Shanghai managed to evade the ravages of the Depression and thrived. With the rising nationalism and the promise of independence came pride and Filipinos wanted to compete and show it to the world. Men and women dressed to the nines. Filipino high end society flourished. Manila had a distinguished cafe culture. Commonwealth infrastructure projects were grand and elegant. It was the height of Philippine society. Then WWII came....
And broo even those Merchants and Small stalls the vendors has some filipino kind of Dresses i mean they wear the hat white shirt and black pants.like God they look so presentable .

Philippines began to fall starting from 1990's
Agreed , I read an article that Philippines still hasn’t recovered from WW2 , Half a million people lived in Manila pre WW2 , quarter million civilians died during the invasion of Manila , some of which are people of industry and educated people with them gone , It just left a big void to help Philippines move forward to a proper independent country

As a young professional, I realized Philippines is the worst place for an intellectual to be born in because Filipinos do not reward excellence, they denounce it because on their innate stubbornness.. Brain Drain is not an issue, in fact, it was never an issue. It was their superiority complex. They seek recognition, and yet they don't work for it. They live a lifestyle they can't afford. Exactly! Pride is is a reflection of the ego, a false identification that consumes humanity. I'd rather love to hear I'm proud to be a human than proud to be Pinoy. Because before being a Pinoy I'm a human.
Sad but true
This is true but i still love being pinoy.

1938,the Filipinos are very formal...
Generally, they still are very formal and polite in speech. They'll cut you off in traffic, step in front of you when you're in line, and be rude in many other ways, but they're quite polite in speech!
@Lt. Pyukumuku No, not at all. I speak from a YEARS of personal experience. Filipinos don't INTEND to be rude, but their actions usually are in these areas.
1) Try to place an order at Jollibee. If you give more than two inches of space between yourself and the persons in front of you, someone will cut in line.
2) Ask PLDT to repair their service. If they take more than a month to restore your service, try to skip paying your bill citing the idea that they should provide service before you pay even more. They'll insist that you pay every month until they fix the service - then they'll give you a credit for the MONTHS of time without service.
These are just two recurrent examples of how their ACTIONS are rude. All the while, they will be extremely polite and apologetic.
Back in those days, wearing a black suit wasn't considered "formal"
Original Manileños were already gone some perished in the War others goes abroad in the late 50's to 80's I lived in Santa Ana I'm a child of a baby boomer my father told me that many people that he grew up with in Santa Ana are now gone some went Abroad selling their properties to probinsyanos. Spanish paintings in the Boxer Codex depicts the inhabitants of the various native kingdoms of the Philippines including Tondo (prior to colonization)... this photos also include some of the ancient gold artifacts discoverd in the archipelago.

Mike Thomas - Well both the Japanese and Americans destroyed Manila during WWII and never helped to rehabilitate it... it went on a downward spiral and never fully recovered... after the war huge amounts of informal settlers started taking root in different parts of the city... creating unplanned and disorganized structures, do you even realize how hard it is to clean the whole mess up?
This was a pre-war Manila. Manila was severely devastated during World War II (one of the most damaged cities during the war). Then poor urban planning in an effort to hasten the rehabilitation took place. The spike in the population after the war clogged the city. To make things worse, the relocation of poor rural settlers flocked the city in their desperation to escape extreme poverty. Moreover, corrupt government and undisciplined citizens (you and me, let's admit) worsen the situation. Hoping we can rebuild our beautiful nation once more.
Back then when people still wearing decent clothes.
This is an old day version of a VLOG. Great video! While watching this, you can reflect the transition of every generation of Manila just like you are travelling in time
No dude it's a documentary
The Philippines is one of the few countries that achieved full independence from the US. What if the Philippines did not become independent, economically would it be like Puerto Rico or Guam today? Or do you think neither Puerto Rico or Guam can prosper without being a US territory?
Should have elected a Dominion level of stable autonomy like Australia, and that could at least have an American commissioner to oversee regional & internal affairs in a limited period of time, just like the US Bases here, but for rooting out unsustainable corruption
Nah...I think it simply depends on the administration of government. If you have very competent leaders running the bureaucracy, your country will prosper even with little to almost no resources, regardless if you were a colony or not.
I dont mind imagine your income is usd. Fuck I'll take it everyday. Fuck this country

@@BuzzlightyearinactionSaSenado lol it depends on your job, stupid. Earning dollars doesn't mean you're rich plus Guam and Puerto Rico don't have the same benefits to the rest of the United States because they are likely neglected territories. Study well to avoid being dumb.

Amazing video / film ! I guess not too many Filipnos even those from generations ago have seen the sceneries depicted in this film ! I'm very sure those who are in their 80's or 90's would truly appreciate this video about Manila circa 1930's. Thank you so much and more success to you guys who conceptualized and endeavored to present this archival film of Manila in You Tube channel. Great works !
I'm very sad to witness what Philippines has become. It used to be very clean and beautiful. No poverty and Very little crime. Very saddening that those days are gone. I believe that the Philippines can regain it's prestige and opulence it once had. Unfortunately, it will be VERY difficult. It will need a solid governance. A strict president just isn't enough. Mayors, senators, congressman, etc. should all be in the same boat in wanting change. Also, ALOT of the big business people in the Philippines aren't Filipino. That's also a problem because all they care about is money. They don't care about the country. I am hopeful that one day, Philippines regains it's status it once had. Fellow Filipinos, please do your part as well.
MAke the Philippines Great Again
Beautiful manila no coke no Pepsi no burgers, no plastic such a beautiful life, well dressed Filipinos what a beautiful era. I wish I can visit your beautiful country phillipines. Love from India. Thanking Michael for this treasure.
I can’t totally imagined that manila was contained of news all over the world and It seems to be the one of the most prestigious country from previous era. Beside, manila was well known queen of the pacific, being have this titlle owned was totally amazing and honourable recognition of a country..
Manila, Philippines.. a rich country, hospitable people... but what is the problem? Government officials...down to the lowest barangay..., why people dont protest....protesting with other people suddenly stops when some were paid to stop....Filipinos should wake up and take sacrifices within themselves to stop corruption....a very hard step for someone who lives a good life being corrupt...THE only cure is a heavy punishment to apply for some crimes that involve corruption...
Now; The Philippines is a dump since Indepenance.

jay correa Philippines should have been greater than Singapore and Hong Kong, everywhere in the world there’s corruption, but when the corruption is too much, that’s what destroy nations. I live in Philippines now for 5 years with my be loved Pinoy wife, we live in metro manila. I wish this country goes back on track again
jay correa ..If you complain about any government official here you are likely to end up with a bullet in you head.
I wanted to go back to the old times, when Manila is a rich and clean city. Specifically during the era when "Filipiniana" and "Barong" are the trend, when Kalesa is the national transportation and Native Filipino(without any other languages involved) is what we always use in communicating.
Just reminisced those moments after reading the book "I Love You Since 1892".
Actually many Filipinos in this era also spoke Spanish. especially there's still quite a lot of Spanish people residing in Manila, especifically in Intramuros.
For the new generation, this is fairly accurate representation and commentary on Manila. Many scenes here were still there in 1950's and even 1960's. Notice the Tramvia (train on Plaza Goiti in sta. cruz
manila!
Worth the watch, to take notes on and to learn!
Less building and structures yet very clean and organized!😱😱😱😱
1938 is when my Grandpa entered the Earth, still fascinates me about all of his stories about the old times.
Imagine how beautiful The Philippines was during the American Period. Take me back pls.
Man In Barong then they will be attacked by Japanese after several years. Where every atrocities, unimaginable were done to civilians. Would you still live in that era?
Wrong.. even before spanish and american period, philippines has always been the pearl of the orient
@@3ls3tak3n Before the Spanish were the time of Tondo I think. It's definitely not the pearl of Asia at that time. Ming Dynasty had better cities in that time. In fact, the only reason why Manila even survived was because of trade from the Chinese. And don't forget Japan. Japan also had more technologically advanced cities and more population at that time. The time when Manila was called the pearl of the orient was when Global trade happened. When Mexico, Madrid and Manila were connected in trade. This made Manila a very advanced and rich city, even richer and advanced than any Qing Dynasty and Japan Cities.
Firefrog Don’t forget that we are bombarded by the Japanese during WW2 and halfway colonized by the Americans.
I studied in LPU in Intramuros, Manila.
And I've been on every corner of Manila.
Seeing this, my heart is breaking knowing that it was such a beautiful and safe place back then.
Unlike today, every filipino would walk in fear of being robbed while walking or riding their way to school or to work.
You literally have to hide your cash inside your socks/shoes so that if someone robs you, they won't get all of your money.
You'd have to carry your bag in front of you so you won't be pickpocketed.
Pasig river is literally black.
Flood can reach your waists on typhoon season.
It would probably take longer hours of commute from a place in manila to another place in manila than an out of town travel..
God, Manila is a nightmare.
Hoping Mayor Isko Moreno could still rehabilitate Manila to its finest state again.

Architects and urban designers should restore the old buildings and urban planning! It's possible to rebuild.
Instead of pointing fingers, putting blame to others and saying bad things about Philippines during this current year (2019), why don't you help the country to regain its glory?
Despite of what's happening and what we have now. If you start the change in yourself, we can still restore what has been ruined before.
How I really wish I could travel back in time.
Love,
A lad from the current year.
the life before was so simple and less complicated than now.
Escolta Street... I went there a few days ago and the street was packed with trucks parked on each side. It's going to be difficult for the local government of Manila to be the center attraction of the Philippines again. I hope they're doing their best.
This makes me appreciate the simplicity of life back then. Maybe that is why old folks would say 'the good ol' days.'

People Power Revolution, Philippines would've been one of the best countries in the world.
Sooo. She is a Marcos supporter?
Nagkakaganito ang Pilipinas dahil naaabuso na yung 1987 Constitution na freedom of speech; spoiled na ang mga Pinoy, I hope we can still change this mindset of us, and change for the better para naman umunlad na tayo.
Yall i hate this so much. You dont have to take any sides like holy shit. Stop with that pro marcos anti marcos thing. Its not going to help and all it will do is seperate us all. Instead, talk about what marcos did good and where he fucked up. While it is true that he did do so much great stuff for the Philippines, we will still wont deny the gross things he did to many people (hence why the people power revolution happened).
Instead of thinking "PH would be better if the People Power Revolution happened", maybe think about it more deeply because "the people power revolution WOULDNT happen if marcos didnt do that intense militarization thing".
Talk about it, no one is right. Come to an agreement.

It was also the Americans who chiefly destroyed the city during WW2. With arms superiority they would bomb a beautiful building to flush out 3 or 4 Japanese hiding inside. They did that to 400 year old Intramuros and suburbs.

During the battle for the liberation of Manila the Japanese do not have anymore air power. 98% of Japanese air power has already been destroyed by the Americans in the Battle of Leyte Gulf dubbed as the greatest sea battle in history. On the other hand the Americans have a most superior air power over the Japanese since nkabawi na sila after the bombing of Pearl Harbor more than 4 years earlier. The Japanese had superior armed forces INSIDE MANILA and they went on a killing ang raping rampage of the civilians. Desperado ang Japanese army. They were already suicidal. So the Americans bombed Manila to flush out the Japanese since wala na naman pambobomba ang mga soldados na Japones.
True the Japanese went on an orgy of killing and raping but the destruction of buildings were left more on the hands of the Americans. Manila was the 2nd most devastated city in WW2 killing more than a hundred thousand civilians. The killings and massacres were more by the Japanese but the bombing and destruction was mainly by the Americans who in the process of bombings also killed several thousand civilians.
Do not rely on UTube as the Americans relied later on propaganda to make up for their senseless destruction of Manila. My source are books that were published by American press like TIME and NEWSWEEK. No. Not the magazines but their compiled stories that were released to their subscribers. You can also check other history books.

I wonder how it feels to live in that year. Because in this 21st century. The old traditions of the Philippines are slowly fading because of the new technologies. The crimes are still shocking but it always/sometimes or mostly happens in 21st century. And the poverty has already reached the level of it. It keeps on increasing in every year.
I feel sad after watching this video. Seeing the past of our country. It was beautiful.
