Having grown up in Paddington in the 80's and 90's (my folks still live there), and being a private chauffeur mostly in central London (2013-2021), your content is literally so close to home for me and my life... Even when I was doing the K 7 years ago I thought it was excessive what they did to students. It’s a great job and I’m glad I persevered, but they need to stop torturing people so much and get them out there within 18 months to 2 years, maximum like they use to in the 80’s. A person who’s up for appearances every 28 days has a more up to date knowledge than a driver who’s been out for 20 years as they’re staring at maps all day and out pointing frequently. This is a step in the right direction.
I agree with this. Thinking back to when i did the knowledge 56s seems to take forever. I got red-lined on 28s and it felt like the end of the world. It makes you feel like you're wasting your time. I remember going through my 2nd time on 28s absolutely terrified of being put back to 56s. The anxiety was crippling at times.
I'm always going to use a black cab when I visit London (not very often) from now on - I always knew of this fabled 'Knowledge' that London taxi drivers had to take, but after watching your videos I had a deeper look into it out of curiosity and wow - it's basically a degree of memorisation. The utmost respect to all of you, seriously.
Agree with removing the redline . Once you've done your 56s you move on, you've passed that stage. You then have to pass your 28s if it takes a couple of goes so be it, it is slightly trickier. The knowledge is a hard journey and a test of character. To pass a stage is a pass. Keep the vlogs coming Tom.
I agree with these changes Tom. I was on 28’s for 18 months due to the lockdown plus having to go again 2nd time round. I was 3-3 going for my drop to 21s, lockdown came, had to wait for 4 months to get my date. The anxiety was overwhelming just waiting whether if I’m going to progress on the K or be sent back to 56s. 😥. Thank God it’s all over
As someone who has the greatest of respect for London cab drivers (having watching the knowledge television series many years ago with Mr Orme & his parrot!) I am glad the highest standard is being maintained. It gives me confidence as a punter that the cabbie is top drawer, plus it would be unfair to existing cabbies if the knowledge was made too easy after they had had to study so hard. Good luck to you guys. In Scotland we had a mini knowledge which was 5 relatively simple route questions that you needed to get 4 right to get a badge. (It's since been replaced with 25 multiple choice to get 20 right). Here, it's found that you don't really gain the knowledge until you are actually out doing the job, and being away from tourist area, I can easily ask the passenger which way they prefer if I'm unsure of shortest route.
This sounds a bit similar to how it was for me I started the Know in the early 90s. There was no red lining or from how it seemed no real structure at all, however it was unlikely you'd be put back to the previous stage. During my time I did seem to get stuck on 56s for about ten appearances but then only about a small number of 28s and 21s. It was totally ambiguous
EXCELLENT video and better explained than i could ever had. In essence this new process IS more fair for prospective students and would be more confident to have done it this way myself...albeit, there are no shortcuts as you still have to have the required standard👍🏻
Hi Tom. I think it'll be a fairer system this way. I got 4 red lines had to go back to the map test twice but after 5 years 4 months when I got my drop to 21's got a double A from Mr Shaw what a relief! I was the last to ever get that mark I think. I failed the finals twice. Roll on 5 and a half years I'm so glad I stuck it out.
I think it's a good thing. The standard is still there, just without the unnecessary pressure. Especially regarding the redline. I'd say it's the equivalent of taking your driving test with the pressure of knowing it would be a 6 month wait to get another test booked in vs being able to take it again in a weeks time; taking away that pressure doesn't make the driving test easier, it just removes unnecessary additional external pressure that has nothing to do with your ability to pass the test based on your ability to drive safely.

Can you do a video explaining the different colour of badges since you have a Green Badge which is the whole of London but some drivers have yellow badges which are parts of London. I did know somebody who was a yellow badge holder for East London
I feel sure it will be just as difficult to pass as this ensures that those who pass appreciate the badge - when they are finally working standards will remain high as fear of losing the badge must always be maintained.
These marginal changes are implemented prior to further changes that are currently being considered. I’m not quite sure why they didn’t wait and incorporate them into an overall package. They might help current students avoid being redlined, but will they encourage take-up? That’s what is important. TPH could start by abolishing the fees. I for one would be quite happily pay more for my license if it subsidised the KOL
In my opinion it's good ,to cancel this redline and moved the tricky questions to 21. I think examiners should concentrate more on the main areas of the work. Central London Mayfair etc and not asking little points with turnaround somewhere in edge of radius. First thing to forget it's that .

I really love your channel, but I couldn’t disagree more with this video. I know we need to stimulate participation in the KOL, but diluting the standards is NOT the way. Same as you do, I still use segments of the no lights runs every day. That’s the point of doing them in the first place. I never cut corners on the KOL because I knew it would pay me back when I got on the road. The lightening strikes (now obsolete because of LTN’s) and no lights runs have been invaluable in my decade in the taxi. Thanks for breaking down the changes on your vlog. To be totally honest with you I’d say it’s a good thing removing it it takes a lot of pressure off the student them examiners I’m not gonna let you pass until they think you’re ready no light runs well I think they’re a good thing to learn once you become a cab driver they can be difficult but well worth learning All that we need now is competitively priced cabs and get rid of the bloody turning circle most places you do a U-turn you just end up getting a ticket

I was a bit disappointed to have a black cab driver in London recently using a GPS on a smartphone. I use black cabs because the drivers know The Knowledge.
Hi Tom. I did the KOL about 20 years ago. When I was at 28’s with 9 points, I then went 3 or 4 D’s and was redlined. On reflection the extra time needed helped me and after that went straight thru. I agree with your assessment. BTW I’m getting a TXE soon. Have no idea where to put my phone. Don’t like suction cups on windscreen. Also don’t like blocking air vents but you’ve got your phone on the central screen. How is that possible? Pls tell 🙏
Great video as always Tom. You alluded to "tricky" examiners. Are some of them really miserable and deliberately set out to make tests virtually impossible? Does anyone review the examiners and how fair they are, or is it just pot luck and there's a wide difference of test difficulty depending on who you get?
Tom it should get considerably easier for the sake of the future of the trade. People love London black cabs. But the number on the knowledge is more than alarming. Add 10 years will anyone be on the knowledge.. I think the yellow badge drivers could be offered the chance to study the central London circuits and be given the opportunity to earn green. I also think the knowledge would attract decent enough numbers if you just mastered the magic circle. This will attract super divided opinions but I think far more people would come forward and ultimately, knowing every single street and backstreet in central London (and what can still be used is still a massive achievement) if that means that a future cabbie may not know every Street to Sydenham.. I don't think that's the end of the world! Current cabbies wouldn't agree but I'm so sure this would be a massive solution
I do and I don’t agree. I definitely think that YB should come a bit more into centralish to cover some of the dead areas where GB generally don’t work or are only passing through. YB should also be easier to obtain. It takes just as long as the GB! It’s a tricky one with areas such as Sydenham, as yes, I could not navigate down there without my cabbies mate and frankly with LTN’s popping up everywhere I wouldn’t dare risk it. It’s also very uncommon to do jobs west to east out in these further areas. But I still think the actual process itself is the character building exercise. Wether you go there or not, or utilise that knowledge is by the by, I think it’s the dedication thats required that earns the badge and retains a cabbie with strong values. Finally, I believe the benefits of the job should be self evident. In years gone by, it kinda sold itself, someone knew a friend of a friend who did The K and was doing alright for themselves. Nowadays everyone has so many career options and opportunities, it’s almost overwhelming. This is partially why I wanted to make the channel, I want to share my account as someone who’s done it and how it works. 😊

Word of mouth is powerful. But if there is no Mouth (and ever decreasing amounts of it. Then there is no word. And when there is no Mouth, then there is no trade. And I think logic needs to be the essence, far more than the character building. You may have been the best coal miner. But when there is no coal mine then yes the persons character will take them far elsewhere, but if we don't want to take it elsewhere then drastic action needs to be taken and that's where my point goes in making the knowledge more attractive. And in order to do that you need enough drivers telling enough people why they should spend years on this and not on a gas installation course. Cabbies need Knowledge boys to survive. The trade is absolutely not old fashioned it's so busy out there I can see with my eyes but the knowledge is and I think it desperately needs to become similar to what I mentioned to get those people getting on it now more than ever
Question needs to be asked why the changes now. Most likely because knowledge students numbers are down. It’s all because of The disruptive tech companies financial clout with influence. The hurdles put in front of you by the examiners set the standards by removing them one at a time over the coming years, pushed by TFL will eliminate one thing for sure quality.
In 2022 with the cheapest phone having a sat nav it's pathetic learning something so obsolete. Keep a few black cabs for the tourist but personally prefer ordering a cab through a app.
The red lines was one of the reasons I decided not to start The Knowledge and now they've bloody taken the bite out of them just my luck And I can't reapply because I was so exasperated by my treatment by TfL (2.5 years just to finish Application Process because of mistakes by them ) I sent them an angry email But whatever onwards and upwards Its all far too expensive now anyway even with this change which is well overdue
They should scrap the red line completely, it’s not necessary. Examiners will know who is more deserving and put through the hard working candidates who are putting in 10-12 hours a day and make the ones quit by continually d’ing them. Before the red line was introduced it was always a 80% drop out rate and most likely always will be

Do really still need knowledge test that much long because with technology All is changing and after test dose cab driver remember all run I don't think so it just need to reduce whit time
it was never hard to start with. Could be done in a week. If it was that hard you would get the calibre of taxi drivers we had that did not go to school passing it. I know a few who are as thick as two planks who passed the knowledge.

Well explained...I had been setback whilst on 56. It was mortifying.

Black cab drivers use satnavs like they would use A-Z map books. Its an aid rather than a necessity.

In 2022 with the cheapest phone having a sat nav it's pathetic learning something so obsolete.
Keep a few black cabs for the tourist but personally prefer ordering a cab through a app.

The red lines was one of the reasons I decided not to start The Knowledge and now they've bloody taken the bite out of them just my luck And I can't reapply because I was so exasperated by my treatment by TfL (2.5 years just to finish Application Process because of mistakes by them ) I sent them an angry email But whatever onwards and upwards Its all far too expensive now anyway even with this change which is well overdue
They should scrap the red line completely, it’s not necessary. Examiners will know who is more deserving and put through the hard working candidates who are putting in 10-12 hours a day and make the ones quit by continually d’ing them. Before the red line was introduced it was always a 80% drop out rate and most likely always will be

When I took my knowledge test 20 years ago it really meant something!!! Now don’t mean shit. Sadly are council panders to the political correction brigade, sadly losing sight of quality and honesty in are trade!!!

it was never hard to start with. Could be done in a week. If it was that hard you would get the calibre of taxi drivers we had that did not go to school passing it. I know a few who are as thick as two planks who passed the knowledge.

@Gareth Mathew noone said satnav was shit. its just not as good as actually knowing. On a normal day with no traffic, of course a satnav can do just as well. But as there is no such thing as a normal day with no traffic in London. But more to the point, how does the uber driver type in "the back of Harrods" or "Finchley Road by the cinema"? By the time the uber has fucked about with the satnav, the black cab is halfway there. That is the difference, and that is why people with real money dont use shit like uber. Uber is for those who want people to think they've got money. Otherwise known as pretentious pricks.
