- Rick Rosner always had a trick up his sleeve. Watch how the crew starts to pack up for their on-location shows from Florida...DURING THE SHOW! Great gimmick!

It’s episodes like this that make you appreciate the people who work behind the scenes on game shows
Studio 3 was the Art Fleming Studio. The same one used for $ale of the Cetury.
I didn't know what to expect from this. The Davidson Squares was always addicted to gimmicks (how many times did they go to FL during their run.) But this was actually really well done. It was a novel way of plugging the FL shows without resorting to stale copy. And the giddiness of the celebrities all crammed on some risers, joking around with each other was actually more fun than the normal show.
*AWESOME* show!! I love seeing how big sets get broken down... 😊
I remember watching this episode in the original run :)
So do I. For some reason, I mis-remembered the big "3" in the background as a "B", black on gray. 34 years does that. :)
Finally, a footage from 80s Hollywood Squares in good quality!
Those were THE DAYS!!!
I'd love to see more episodes from this version of Hollywood Squares. Thanks Wink for posting this
Thanks Wink!
He has some great stuff. I totally had forgotten some of these celebrities.
I like how all the slates we're seen so far look totally different from each other.
Thank you for sharing these!

Hilarious answers to the final question!

Looking at the end credits: Wayne Bartlett worked on audio on Sale of the Century. Wendy Rotoli did audio for Scrabble. Robert Pearson and Paul Zigabarra also did video for Scrabble.
Tom Patio was the unit manager for most of the NBC game shows.
I would love a jacket
I wonder if the next upload is the one where they show a sped up time lapse of reassembling the set. Thank you for the recent string of videos Wink and JRJ!
But John Davidson/the contestants' area remained untouched. Weird, but I love seeing these kind of videos.
OMG I remember seeing this episode but not understanding what was going on. Looking back I assumed the board broke mid show.
I...think? The board does in fact break down on another episode, so they're forced to use the X and O signs like you see here until power gets restored.
Holy crap that's Sally Jessy Raphael!
The celebrities on this version were fun.
It's good we get a behind the scenes look on breaking down the set. In later episodes, the bottom left square be modified to accommodate big groups and the celebrity chef (can't remember his name).
Justin Wilson? I remembered that episode because Weird Al was on there too.
The Solid Gold Dancers appeared in that elongated "square" within just a few weeks. That was probably the most-extreme example.
I think Wolfgang Puck was on there more than a few times too.
Also I think the Facts of Life girls & the girls from Just the Ten of Us (I had a crush on the redhead; Jamie Luner, I think her name was).
I think the Osmond "boys" were on there too, when they first started performing in Branson.
@@ericjonmagnuson2728 i remember the solid gold dancers appearance on the show. I was young then
At 2:30 , awkward question as Nixon had two veeps!
At 5:55 , Eastern Airlines!
I remember the set breakdown prior to the trips east...I bet it was costly to ship everyone and everything!
Another great post! Thanks, Wink!
I was wondering how they'd address the Nixon VP question for that exact reason. "Bush" is easily understood, and "a Ford" fits the question much better than "an Agnew"...but if they were going for some kind of vernacular in there, it makes me wonder what the heck "a Mondale" is supposed to be other than Walter/his family.
Hey! "New" episodes are nice. (Back in November, I binged on what's been available of Davidson Squares - this, like Joan Rivers's debut on this run, isn't up anywhere else.)
Sidebar - Sally Jessy Raphael being a square on this one might explain "Donahue Game Show Hosts" being a chosen pick on the right side, heh.
I can tell this is from when they still did the show in beautiful downtown Burbank, mainly because for about a second or so, I can see the images of Johnny Carson painted on the back wall.
It was. They didn't shoot at Universal Studios till Season 3 (this was Season 2, the Florida shows aired in February).
the closing credits long ago prompted me to look up the meaning of the term "amanuensis" - fancy term for secretary or scribe...
This was probably one of the most interesting game show episodes ever seen; we don't get to see this stuff that often - John had mentioned what was going on through the week, but this episode lol. I remember this episode, too. Good to see Gábor Zsá Zsá before the drama, Gary Collins, Mary Ann Mobley, and Pat Harrington - RIP. Shadoe Stevens isn't in this episode.
@@samuraicrunchbird That's his brother Richard.
He was off filming a movie
I would love to ask Bob Costas about this episode.
How long did it actually take to strike that set?!? Anyone know?!?
One of the first questions upon their return was (after rerunning the footage) was how long did it take to put the set together. I don't recall exactly, but I think it was 11 hours or so. (35 years will blur anyone's memory!)
Hey Wink, I guess your show wasn’t the only one with X’s and O’s. Only occupant of the squares on your show was a dragon.
I always felt the whole packing-up thing was ridiculous. For one thing, game shows were videotaped in advance and not live. Also, "The New Hollywood Squares" was in syndication as opposed to a network. Besides, they used a customized set while they were down in Florida.
It's just a joke dude. Relax
@@jrjgames exactly
Most of the gimmicks on the John Davidson version were ridiculous.
I think that particular set was being transferred to ABC Television Center for the remainder of that season. Season 2 was taped Fox Television Studios and Season 3 was taped at Universal Studios.
@@Lupton2000 That actually makes more sense as to why they're doing the set thing.
Nixon also have Agnew
I love Pat's enthusiasm! You couldn't get away with those answers today.
Funny thing about the "somniloquist" question - the (wrong) answer given, that it's a sleepwalker, is actually what a "somnambulist" is. And that would itself be a separate question on another episode - asked to Zsa Zsa Gabor, no less, who remarks that it's an awful word for a Hungarian (like herself) to pronounce.
I prefer tic tac dough over Hollywood squares, but both are sure fun to watch.
I'm not used to people getting no money per square after 2 years of Buzzr ;-)
Or the zingers? ;)
Or no default wins.
@@sprinter82 Actually, this version does in fact have a few "default wins" in it - but only under one specific circumstance.
There's a few episodes floating around where a contestant gets a question wrong, and the result gives their opponent a 5-Square win. (I'm not sure if these are all where the game came down to the last square remaining, I'd have to double-check that.) There are no "default" tic-tac-toe wins like in MG/HS, that is true. But there are a few "default" 5-Square wins (unlike in the Bergeron run, of course).
