The amount of skill it took RB to not only conceive the joke, but also to write the lines, remember the lines, and deliver the lines written upside down. back to front and inside out. An absolute genius, the likes of which we will never see again.
The conception of this sketch is amazing. Guy has a complete round of complicated drinks to remember, and gradually forgets them as he gets drunk. That's gold. But then Ronnie Barker just aces it with his own genius performance. Gold^2.
A granny in Australia says...god how I miss them! I was in my 20's when I saw these on our crappy old black & white TV. Nearly 80 now. I thought they were genius then, and now, even moreso. How they did it with a straight face I will never know! Have you guys watched "The Goodies"? Mental :)
It’s like watching a master painter or sculptor… with expert flourish of brush, blade or pen, they craft a masterpiece, one effortless swipe at a time….
I saw Ronnie Barker one day outside a school in Oxford and i left him in peace when i really wanted to speak to him. But they were both so well matched and are so missed by many who seek good comedy .
One of the classic elements of comedy is subverting audience expectations, and the end of this sketch is a great example of this. Up to the last few seconds, the whole joke is about Ronnie B being unable to remember and order a round of drinks, as he gets more confused (and drunk) - but at the last minute, we find the silliest of his confused orders actually being treated like a normal one and the barman having exactly what he asks for to hand! Genius, and comedy gold.
Love 'The Two Ronnies' grew up watching them, so along the same lines as this sketch you need to have a look at "Dinner for One" it is a two-hander (2 actors) one act play it generally is televised every New Years Eve here in Australia, very funny and I enjoy watching it every year
It’s a shame America didn’t get British comedy. Being an Aussie, we got so much of British tv. And growing up watching British comedy was hysterical and the old stuff is still funny after all these years.
Really!? I often recall the party at which Ronnie B plays a man who is polite and rude in turn but I have never seen it since the first time. Perhaps the rude comments are thought to be too rude these days. Where is that sketch?
"Barker", as in the person who stands at the front gate of circuses and carnivals shouting, "Roll up! Roll up! We've got such sights to see you won't believe your eyes!" etc.
Brilliant script writing as well as the acting. A real art remembering his lines each time he placed the order, whilst pretending to get more drunk with each gin & tonic.
OMG, Spencer. Wetherspoons? C'mon. You need to get a bit lost on a wiggly windy lane, find a village with a pub called The Slaughtered Lamb. Oooh. Will they yokel locals be good or ghoulish? American Werewolf in London film reference there :o)
There were 2 short, mostly silent comedy films called "The Plank" and its own remake which I think had the same name, which feature the cream of British comedy from the 60s-70s, helmed by the very talented Eric Sykes. Well worth a look for some greater context for British comedy.
It's one thing being able to remember lines, it's another deliberately trying to remember lines that have been forgotten with multiple variations of wrongness, whilst acting drunk. It was hard enough typing that
I memorised one of his sketches for my drama exam at school many moons ago, specifically his Ministry Of Communications piece in which there's almost no single complete sentence. It probably took me a month to get it down; I would play it again and again on my cheap Walkman (now I'm really dating myself 😊). But it was worth it, because I passed with distinction. And I can do the sketch on command even now, because I still can't get it out of my head!
P.S. My fave party/pub game is sneakily moving drinks around the table when everyone else is otherwise occupied. You'd be surprised at how many never notice My bad :o)
The Two Ronnies were masters of word play, they also had at least a couple of sketches decades before their time, likes of the department of S ual (gender) Equality with Ronnie Barker.
The two Ronnie's and Comedians like Billy Connelly, and Peter Kay are keen observers of the little quirks of humanity, but its always with affection. They are not mean comics. Its the best of British humour.
'Bag of coke' in the 70's was more likely coal and not the drug we associate today...I think the 'Two Ronnies' steered well clear of drug references so more innocent than folk might perceive with todays heads...
Steptoe & Son weren't a duo, in the 2R sense; they were lead characters in a very very very etc good show of the same name. (Reversioned in America as "Sanford & Son", fact fans.)
@@markcutting6504 The film of Porridge focused on an escape during a soccer match - are you thinking of one of the TV series extended Christmas special episodes? What happens in it? (Film had a banging theme tune, though, by Joe Brown, called Free Inside - "Made a wrong turn at seventeen, and it took me down a one-way street...")
Was just saying as a kid I remember the porridge film & Steptoe at xmas.whether it was filmed exclusively for Xmas I can't remember,I was 5/6!yes the football match & the escape & there both found drunk in the cellar.Steptoe I remember a greyhound & a coffin!
Two Ronnies are such legends.....so guys.....when are you finally going to discover the Fast Show? I've seen 100s of your videos and King Boomer's videos and neither of you have done a single video of the Fast Show. Is it banned from RUclips or something?
"Coke" in this is not cocaine, but it's funnier if it is. :D It's "a grey, hard, and porous coal-based fuel with a high carbon content and few impurities, made by heating coal or oil in the absence of air-a destructive distillation process." From wiki. I'm English and 44, and I've never seen it in my life.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont go to a Weatherspoons they are the worst of chain pubs you can imagine. Its alwasy busy because the beer is cheap and those that do a lot of day drinking go there. The food is appalling and mostly mircwaved. Seriously do yourself a favour ask a local or check an online guide for a good pub you will have a much better experience for it.
TBH - I live in London and to go into ANY pub but a 'spoons' is like taking a second mortgage out! If they didn't exist, I would not be able to go out as often as I do... 😊
Please do yourself a favour, don't go to a Wetherspoon. They are honestly shit pubs. If you want the British pub experience, steer clear of Wetherspoons.

indeed, but also consider he didnt actually need to remember ALL of the lines, only the general theme, the rest could be made up on the fly.
Ronnie Barker was a legend with playing with words 😁
How the guy playing the bartender kept a straight face is brilliant 😂
The genius of being able to remember all those lines and keep a straight face.
"Ice and lemon?"
" If there's room in the glass... "
Has passed into colloquial speech...
Similar to Groucho Marx in 'Go West', when asked if he wanted ice in his whiskey he replied 'No, it takes up too much room'.
The conception of this sketch is amazing. Guy has a complete round of complicated drinks to remember, and gradually forgets them as he gets drunk.

the tv series 'porridge' starring ronnie barker is one of the all time great comedy series
And it's still on (Dave?)

This is Ronnie Barker at his absolute best.
Ronnie Barker was an absolute legend when it came to wordplay.

Agree, the Americans laugh when they shouldn't and remain blank faced when they should laugh.
I love the fact the Aussies loved The Goodies ! Brilliant stuff!👍🏼🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️
The line "I do what I'm knowing" tends to get missed on these things lol
Very much a classic Ronnie Barker line :D
Spencer that may be the most I've ever seen you laugh 😂😂
You gotta watch the phantom raspberry blower of old London town.....ir was a regular story segment during one of the many series of The Two Ronnie's
Yes I agree and The Worm has turned 👍🏻👍🏻
I have the box set of the entire Two Ronnies series (all 12 of them) on DVD. This one is from series 5, which was one of the best for me!
May I suggest, as a follow up, 'Two Ronnies. Best Down the Pub Songs sketch'. This is a must not miss!
So glad you finally reacted to this one, I knew you'd love it 😅
One of their greatest skits is "Encyclopedia salesman". You should definitely react to that one.
Great comedy sketch, check out this one, Morecambe and Wise, the breakfast.
Brilliant script writing as well as the acting. A real art remembering his lines each time he placed the order, whilst pretending to get more drunk with each gin & tonic.
Have a look at the art gallery sketch by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. I promise you will love it!
Next 2 Ronnies HAS to be "Swear box"
I notice you haven't done any of their musical ones which are hilarious
In case it hasn't been mentioned already, the 'coke' isn't drugs. It's a form of coal you put on the BBQ to light and cook your food over.
Been there, done that !
Ronnie barker not baker
Ronnie Barker wrote for That Was The Week That Was, an avant garde comedy show that featured members of Monty Python.
This was shown during family viewing hours.
How many times have you seen these guys?? It's Ronnie BAR KER :-Barker we Brits pronounce our R's!!! Well sometimes 😂😂😂
OMG, Spencer. Wetherspoons? C'mon. You need to get a bit lost on a wiggly windy lane, find a village with a pub called The Slaughtered Lamb. Oooh. Will they yokel locals be good or ghoulish? American Werewolf in London film reference there :o)
& a very young rik mayall sat with Brian glover

Sykes shared an office with Milligan - imagine...

Great to see you laughing so hard, Spencer! :)
Ronnie Barker
The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town..the 2 Ronnie's...a must watch
You need to watch taskmaster please
And he probably nailed it in one tske
Great reaction, guys. I'll have whatever you're drinking!
Barker, not Baker.
I cant be the only one who forgot the 1st order before he even finished the sentence lol
P.S. My fave party/pub game is sneakily moving drinks around the table when everyone else is otherwise occupied. You'd be surprised at how many never notice
My bad :o)
The Two Ronnies were masters of word play, they also had at least a couple of sketches decades before their time, likes of the department of S ual (gender) Equality with Ronnie Barker.
Now Your Cooking With Gas 😂
Pure Genius!!😂
I feel for the bartender!
The bag of coke these days takes it to another level 😊
It's only by watching old comedies like this beauty that you realise just how miserable the world has become.
The two Ronnie's and Comedians like Billy Connelly, and Peter Kay are keen observers of the little quirks of humanity, but its always with affection. They are not mean comics. Its the best of British humour.
React to Taskmaster. Start at Series 1. It’s great!
'Bag of coke' in the 70's was more likely coal and not the drug we associate today...I think the 'Two Ronnies' steered well clear of drug references so more innocent than folk might perceive with todays heads...
You both need to watch the two Ronnie's (racing Pigeon)
2 Ronnie's were a great comedy duo. Hope you guys can do a reaction on Steptoe & Son another great comedy duo.

Do you mean Ronnies Barker
I've got a feeling you're going to have a good time in the UK. I'm not sure you'll see much outside the four walls of a pub... which is fine.
Don't forget Fred Dibnah.

Yeah...58 here and from a Derbyshire mining town so more familiar with it
Why didn't Ronnie C play the barman?
Weatherspoons? Give it a miss, or do the tourist thing coz just coz
The Two Ronnies Comedy genius can you please do a reaction to another British legend Dick Emery
Spencer ring back I ignored the foreign call signal
Try watching some Dave Allen.
Has Spencer stopped laughing yet?
Isn't it Peep Show today? really need a fix..😂
Im guessing you like this one, Spencer
Avoid Weatherspoons

It wasn't cocaine coke
Coke=coal
I was about to say the same, but the sketch still works regardless.
@@SirHilaryManfat I think it being cocaine makes it funnier.
They're American not fukin martians😫I doubt quaint English pubs sold sacks of cocaine even in the cheaper 70's.
Coke = SMOKELESS coal... 😊
It is a sad fact that these American 'Reaction' shows the hosts think it is all about them.
Please do yourself a favour, don't go to a Wetherspoon. They are honestly shit pubs. If you want the British pub experience, steer clear of Wetherspoons.
Guys it’s not that funny enough with the fake laughing
The obnoxious party guest-another two ronnies great
