Ronnie Barker was a writing genus you should check out his sitcoms Porridge a British slang word for being in prison where he plays a career criminal teaching his younger cell mate how to survive in prison and constantly outsmarting the guards or open all hours where he plays a grocery shop keeper who's obsessed with money and the statuesque district nurse who lives across the street. His use of the character's speech impediment to completely change the meaning of a line of dialogue is comedy gold.

1:34 Sainsbury's is a UK food store chain
2:10 A Bloomer is a type of bread (Ron C: Bloomers, 2 large. Ron B hears: Bloomers (women's underpants) too large
2:20 Ronnie Corbett refers to 20p bread rolls, whereas Ronnie Barker hears it as her "rolling around" for 20p

I did notice you looked a little confused at the pilchards joke. A pilchard is a fish that's usually kept in a tin of oil, similar to sardines. And in case you didn't know, "having a quick butcher's" is Cockney rhyming slang. Butchers > butchers hook > look. This sketch is just full of subtle innuendo and I love it :P

I wouldn't say that that Tommy Cooper is the greatest British comedian of all time, I'd pick Lee Evans. However in my family there was an inhouse joke that Tommy Cooper (due to the uncanny resemblance) was my Grandfathers 'funny side' as my grandad looked JUST like him but hardly ever laughed and was very stern and strict, never told jokes at all and was always serious and had an anger problem. We'd say Tommy is his lighter funny side and we got saddled with the dark side.

All I can say is watch as much of The Two Ronnies as you can. They were on telly for many years so there's plenty to go at. Ronnie Barker wrote under the name of Gerald Wiley which is a name often seen in the credits. He kept this secret from everyone for many years, submitting material by mail only, until he accepted an invitation to a meeting at the BBC where everyone was excited at the prospect of finally meeting this Gerald Wiley. Just before they went into the meeting he took Ronnie Corbett to one side and told him he thought he should be the first to know that he was in fact Gerald Wiley which I think was an incredibly respectful thing to do to acknowledge his partnership with Ronnie C before anyone or anything else. I'd also recommend you watching Ronnie Barker's speech after accepting his BAFTA for Lifetime Achievement Award that was presented to him by Ronnie Corbett and David Jason who he described as, "my two best friends," and to watch it without getting at least a lump in your throat. The Two Ronnies were remarkable comic performers and we will never see their like again. Feast yourselves on as much of them as you can.

The two of them met by chance on Sir David Frost live show as everything was back in the 60's and before, they worked with a number of people on his show including John Cleese, Ronnie C and his wife worked at a few clubs in the West End of London, Anne Hart appeared in The Crazy Gang I think she was already married, and then married Ronnie C, however he was one of the lead men in a nightclub which my late friend owned, they'd previously worked before in other clubs, and when Dan bought his club Ronnie worked there. Look up Danny La Rue, he passed away in 09 and we were friends from the 1970's

Barker's Minister for the mispronunciation of words is one of the funniest dialogs ever. He was so good that he once accepted an award completely in character add lib.

This reminds me of the Peter Cook and Dudley Moore sketch of "Roger Braintree". Both brilliant!

As with many of these types of program both then an today, there were many writers of sketches for them. Sure they did a few of their own. However, the most prolific writer the producers bought from was Gerald Wiley. Ronnie Barker never influenced the purchases. When he died, it was announce that he wrote under that pseudo name. Check them out acting individually. Ronnie Barker in "Open all hours" and a few movie roles, for instance.

You should also check out some of their solo sitcoms such as open all hours and porridge with Ronnie barker and sorry with Ronnie Corbett

The two Ronnie's based most of their comedy on wordplay and Rinnie Barker was a master at it (though they also used other writers including many of the Pythons).
Check out the Mispronunciation Sketch and The Ministry of Equality for a start.

You asked who wrote it. A great deal of their act was written by Ronnie Barker, the larger of the two Ronnies. He was a very clever writer of comedy sketches.

Hi guys. Hovis is a brand of bread if you were wondering. We also say bun in the oven as slang for pregnant. Great reaction as always. Think this sketch is 35 plus years old. Porridge is a good shout as is the worm that turned and piggy malone which were skits in their show

Ronnie barker, the taller of the two is an absolute comedy genius. His writing skills were second to none. Ronnie Corbett was good but barker was a different class. Watch an episode of porridge to really appreciate how good he is!

no comedy double act, thanks mostly to Ronnie Barkers writing, can get close to the two ronnies, Even the great Morecambe and Wise, But one i think you should try, mostly because theyre from my Hometown, Oldham, near Manchester, is Cannon & Ball, sadly one of them, Bobby Ball, died of covid a couple of years ago, but one of my earliest memories is seeing them on stage once and they briefly included me in their act. they knew their art.
