The point about Marianne recommending the communist manifesto when she hadn't read it is such a good point that it didn't pick up on, and your analysis of it was so good!
It’s also very ironic that she recommends a book that essentially fueled many people’s revolts against the upper class and the privileged of which she hasn’t even read!
@Teamgeist marxism and stalinism are not the same thing. Besides, reading or talking about the communist manifesto doesn't mean one is communist, just that one has interest in politics, economics, history and/or society.
another youtuber called John Fish did that. Its a good video, check it out. Would be nice to see a comparison in perspective/opinion though if Jack did do it
1. In the waiting room 2. The communist manifestó 3. Never let me go 4. The way by swann's 1/7 in search of lost time 5. Temples of delight Poem Why I am not a painter
This video just in time as I finished Normal People an hour ago. I was just about to rewatch your video about Connell. I learned a lot from these videos. I'm 15 years old an currently getting into this kind of literature (the books that are recommended). I loved how you explained the connection between the books that are referenced and the actuall text. I will look out for these references in other books from now on. I'm really gratefull that you use your knowlege and take time to open new worlds to other people.
I loved this video!! Just a warning though: 4:15-4:30 is actually a spoiler for Never Let Me Go! Those plot details aren’t revealed until the end of the book 😂
Yap, I read the book without knowing what it was about and the feeling of slowly realizing the real topic of the book felt like a horror story to me and it did not feel slow thanks to it at all. Thanks to Jack, this discovering bit is definitely ruined for other people.
Also there's a charachter in conversations with friends (sally rooney's debut novel) called Marianne. She's a minor charachter and we don't see her a lot and she has nothing to do with Marianne from Normal People but the first time she's introduced she had just come back from a trip to New York :')))))
Would deffo love more videos in this style. A fantastic way to keep the English lit theme alive on your channel, and your analysis is so so interesting
If you liked that slow burn in Never Let Me Go, you should really read the Remains of the Day by Ishiguro. It’s been a small narration epiphany for me. I love how his endings are like a slow dawning of meaning.
Jack drawing all the connections between the different books and comprehending their plots in a greater sense is so impressive! Definitely what I aspire to be x
Also: Marianne and Connell actually feature in Conversations With Friends!! There’s a cameo! I read CWF first so when I read NP I was like!! “They have to be the same characters” lol
I've read Conversations With Friends, I felt like the Marianne in that was a different character altogether. But if you have the paperback and remember, could you please tell me at what point they do?
I recently read Normal People, and I just finished the show. Never let me go is one of my favorites books, so I was really excited when I saw Marianne was reading it (as if she was a real person, not gonna lie)
I just realised that the characters are named Marianne and Connell, like in sense and sensibility, Marianne and colonel Brandon (not exactly but it just reminds me of it)
"Guess who's back? And guess who's Jack? The answer to both of this questions is me!" Nice rhyme. Nice pun. I have to tell you I love your way of puns and your sort of... may we call it humor ;) Those little puns you do, keep bringing a smile to my face, 'cause I know there is someone out there just brabbling the same way I do. And I have to tell you a lot of people in my surrounding get really annoyed by me doing very bad puns, but I find them even more funny and encouraging the more ridiculous and nonsensish and just roll-your-eyes they are. So what I originally intended with this comment is to say *thank you* for your way of beeing you (with all the puns and fun and stress and everything) and sharing it with the world. Even now, that you are no longer studying you keep my mind sane while examseason. Especially now that it is my last exam seasom before my bachelorthesis... sort of scary... Basicly: Thank you for the little smile you put on my face with the few very first seconds of this video! :D
This is so interesting! 🧐 I’m currently reading Normal People and just finished the Hulu series. Just curious to see how the story is portrayed from book to screen (although I heard it’s very similar).
I was waiting for this video 🤩 I love it when you share with us your knowledge on literature. I gotta note down some titles for my reading list ✨ I found really interesting what you said about class anxiety, when I read and watched normal people I thought that that reluctance to not giving his opinion on literary works was just part of Connell's shyness but now I get it
This is amazing content! So original and a really cool way to further understand Normal People , i did this a few years ago with perks of being a wallflower and having other novels and music to accompany books gives them so much more texture it’s fab
I found the series superior to the book. I just couldn’t get over some of the stylistic choices she made in the novel. I am gonna give Rooney another go with Conversations with Friends, which curiously is also being adapted into a series.
I never thought I would hear someone promoting The Communist Manifesto on youtube. I live in a former socialist republic and this book is a taboo here. When my grandma caught me reading it she got so concerned lol
Hey, I’m a English Lit (&Philosophy) Student at Nottingham. I’m actually your age but first year & I would love a break down on literary theories 🥺 It also seems you have them naturally ingrained in your brain. Pleasee do a video! 💜💐
It's actually really amazing how you are explaining that book so well even when we both have same feelings for it. I get it that you're an English literature student and I'm only a senior in highschool with no scope of studying literature in uni even though I want to, I still hope one day I can explain so beautifully like you do!
Thanks for this video too, I now have a list of books to read for this summer related to Normal People. Aaaaand I'm really glad you talked about the illustration on the cover of the book!! I was actually wondering about the significance ^^
I literally finished Normal People today and I love the videos you made about it! Looking forward to Conversations with Friends, I definitely have to get that one, too.
In The Waiting Room - Elizabeth Bishop The Communist Manifesto - Marx & Engels Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro The Way by Swann's - Proust Temples Of Delight - Barbara Trapido Frank O'Hara
I’m late to the party but this is a fantastic series, Jack! I feel like RUclips and Lit students like yourself are supplementing the education I’ve always wanted but never took up (I went the conventional Econ path 🤣)
i have the attention span of a fly but i watched both of these videos straight through because they're SO interesting. normal people is brilliant and so is your channel !!!!
So happy you made this video to follow up the one with Connell! Actually just finishing reading Normal People at the moment so feels like a weird coincidence that you've uploaded this now. Definitely feel you re: not becoming Paul Mescal, think I'd be in the same boat if I did the same and didn't transform into Daisy Edgar-Jones by the end of it (she's such a stunner!)
I've seen two youtubers now that I love make the mistake of saying that Marianne recommends the Communist Manifesto to Connell. It is actually the other way around: "He told her she should try reading The Communist Manifesto, he thought she would like it, and he offered to write down the title for her so she wouldn't forget. I know what the Communist Manifesto is called, she said. He shrugged okay. After a moment he added, smiling: You're trying to act superior, but like, you haven't even read it. " p 13 So no she didn't recommend it to him but the point still stands that Marianne has the advantage of pretending to be "superior" in intellect because of her wealth and the status it brings when in actual fact, Connell, who is working class and stereotypically expected to not have "high culture interests" is actually more well read.
THANK YOU, I was so confused about that point I thought I was remembering it wrong and the comments were also talking about it like Marianne recommended it aahh. (unless they changed it in the tv adaptation?)
Jack really restored my faith in man like he likes literature and is a feminist and nice and not toxic or misogynistic like can you please be my friend? 😂
People also say "there no jobs in certain industries " but it's where we go looking for this . Also we are going through a whole pandemic too Haha. Creative people need to stick together our time will come. 😀💚
You should do some of Rory Gilmore’s reading list from Gilmore Girls :)
He promised Harry Styles’ reading list first
Yes yes yes .... and the Jess Mariano Reading list
That would be a dream!!!
I was about to comment this!!
Yes yes yes!!!
I would love seeing you do the books Elio and Oliver read in Call me by your name!
That will be cool
Yes!!!!?
yess that would be so cool
Yes pls omg!!!!!
I agree.
It's like, the shortest book, too, and specifically written to be very clear. So she managed Swann's Way, but not that? It's got to be intentional...
I am very confused. I just read the book and Connel recommends the Communist Manifesto to Marianne. Not the other way around.
@Teamgeist marxism and stalinism are not the same thing. Besides, reading or talking about the communist manifesto doesn't mean one is communist, just that one has interest in politics, economics, history and/or society.
@Teamgeist Tell us you know nothing about marxism without telling us
As an unemployed English graduate, the jokes in Normal People hit hard
I have a English diploma and I don't work with literature
Ohh, he should so do : Every book Joe reads or is mentioned in You.
another youtuber called John Fish did that. Its a good video, check it out. Would be nice to see a comparison in perspective/opinion though if Jack did do it

these videos were so nuanced, loved them for that
I loved this video!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! YOU ARE AN ANGEL.
Ah i wish i read this comment sooner😭
I feel like my brain just expanded after watching this video

This is exactly the video I needed as I refreshed my feed.
Would deffo love more videos in this style. A fantastic way to keep the English lit theme alive on your channel, and your analysis is so so interesting

Never Let Me Go is such a good book, I didn’t stop reading from pretty much the first time i picked it up.
its one of my absolute favourites ....i cried
sad because it was a lethargic book for me :/
Jack drawing all the connections between the different books and comprehending their plots in a greater sense is so impressive! Definitely what I aspire to be x
Please do Gilmore girl book list Haha.great video love normal people so much also from the lovely island of Ireland 😀💚
Also: Marianne and Connell actually feature in Conversations With Friends!! There’s a cameo! I read CWF first so when I read NP I was like!! “They have to be the same characters” lol

OMG !!! yesss. We need a Sally Rooney Literary Universe.
I recently read Normal People, and I just finished the show. Never let me go is one of my favorites books, so I was really excited when I saw Marianne was reading it (as if she was a real person, not gonna lie)
Jack the Postman....He Delivers!!
Love the video!!
Honestly, these 2 videos have been the absolute highlight of my entire RUclips experience. Never waited for a vid like I did for this one.
I just finished my English degree too and am OBSESSED with your channel. Doing gods work truly
this is so cool omg i love it !! love how the books link to the character of marianne it’s soo clever
I just realised that the characters are named Marianne and Connell, like in sense and sensibility, Marianne and colonel Brandon (not exactly but it just reminds me of it)
I love this, I loved reading normal people and this extra context and your analysis is amazing
I had goosebumps when you relate the poem with the book cover design. SARDINES. The cover in Orange.
My mind is BLOWN AWAY!!
I LOOOOOVE any reading challenges you do! Such good reading inspiration in such a fun way!
Love these tipes of book videos. Keep up the good work! You inspire me to make better videos every day!!!
Have been waiting for this for SO long! Delivered as ever Jack x
Suffice to say, you totally delivered, Jack!
i love that even though he posed similarly than marianne in the thumbnail he still jack-ifies it with the pout 🤣
A list of the books mentioned in the description box is appreciated (don't worry, we will still watch the video to hear you talk about them!)
"Guess who's back? And guess who's Jack? The answer to both of this questions is me!"
Nice rhyme. Nice pun.

YAY! Finished the book as well as the series a few days ago. I LOVE your videos.

This is sooo good omg, norma people is just PERFECTION
the class topic in normal people is done SO well
I just noticed when you talked about Proust, your tshirt had Persia/Farsi words on it! So thumbs up to that 👍👍✌️✌️
This is amazing content! So original and a really cool way to further understand Normal People , i did this a few years ago with perks of being a wallflower and having other novels and music to accompany books gives them so much more texture it’s fab

I liked this even before watching the whole vid. THANK YOU FOR DOING A PART 2 !!!!!!!
I never thought I would hear someone promoting The Communist Manifesto on youtube. I live in a former socialist republic and this book is a taboo here. When my grandma caught me reading it she got so concerned lol
@Teamgeist "Communism is when genocide" - Karl Marx
Maybe actually read something before talking about it
I really enjoyed your analysis on the books and how they link to Normal People, as well as the analysis of the characters. Super super interesting.
So excited to watch this! Loved your video where you read Connell's studied books
Super insightful! The videos are such a pleasure to watch after reading to book! Thanks 😊

jack these videos are among the best ones I've ever seen on youtube
Loved this video!! Part 1 made me read the book and I really enjoyed it!!
