I love how Rooney makes characters write long profound emails. This woman is gonna bring back love letters and now I want to live a life where I can write long profound letters to someone😭
Honestly, get a penpal! I truly recommend it, you can do snail mail or email and find some one to write long letters too and it's so much fun, builds real friendships and everyone should try it!
it makes me so sad when people put down sally rooney’s books because “nothing really happens” or “they’re boring.” like you said in the end, a good book doesn’t have to be profound or incredibly philosophical, but the little things can be so enthralling!! especially because there are few authors like her that focus on the importance’s of every day things. it’s refreshing to see that take in books instead of everything having to be dramatic or have huge plot twists, even though i like those things in books too. diversifying what i read just keeps my interest in reading alive and i have sally rooney to thank for that :)
It's the same with films -- sometimes it's not about the plot (I sometimes even get tired of fiction with heavy plots, especially when I am busy with daily life), it's about how the story is told, the language and observations. Sometimes, it is the everyday things that are most relatable.
Honestly I am currently having trouble finishing "Normal People" (my first sally rooney book) and not because of the fact nothing happens...its actually the opposite, I just find the plot a little soap-dramary? I REALLY want to like her books because I LOVE slice of life and books where nothing much happens, I just don't really think that's the case with "normal people". Is BWWYA better?
Give me Bret Easton Ellis for that kind of thing over Rooney any day. I get the vibe and appeal of her style, but it wore thin after her first book for me. Her characters all come across as people who think they have something worthwhile to say, but really don't - and I'm not sure if she's being ironic about that (if it's some kind of observation on millennials and gen z) or if she genuinely doesn't have anything worthwhile to say for herself.
It sounds so comforting like "book club sleepover" omg imagine lighting a candle in a room, sitting with your friends, all comfy and just reading quietly
my favourite thing about sally rooney's writing (and there are a lot of things I love about her) is the way she portrays silence and things unsaid, which, in my opinion, is the whole point of her stories: the miscommunication we encounter every day and how it shapes our relationships with other people. And I think you summarize it perfectly on this video ✨ I can't wait to have the book and start reading it 😭❤️
Wow I hadn't thought of it that way but after you say it I realise that it's exactly how I feel. And it's why I don't mind the lack of quotation marks. I like that it exaggerates that sense of silence
The thing that is interesting though is us here in Ireland, growing up we're essentially told to just get on with things etc. so we do often fail to communicate well/have deep connections especially due to the effects of things like the magdalene laundries and other religious/politicial incidents. You're told we don't speak about those things growing up and it keeps us silent and isolated from others who probably feel the same. Even mental health! its just a huge stigma here which conall's issues showed in normal people. So even when it seems like she has a lot of privilege to only speak out about communication/love, its much more deeply rooted here and context and living and growing up in Ireland definitely helps with seeing that! :)
I feel like Irish singer/songwriter Orla Gartland kind of talks about this in her song "Bloodline/Difficult things"! At least your comment made me think of that song.
@@dartapriedniece6936 100%!! also a huge national treasure lol! and she had to move countries to even grow as an artists mainly due to the lack of emphasis on female artists here!!
I feel that, I often find that here in New Zealand too. I felt when I went to Ireland it was quite like it here back in NZ not just the scenery but the people too.
The part where Jack is closed up in a blankie, and god he looks so adorable talking about Sally he's totally mesmerized and in awe of her writing and it shows in his expressions and smiles!
I really love Sally Rooney's writing. I liked what you were saying about how we want to read about relationships because I really think that that's the biggest draw of her books is the way she depicts the complexities of interpersonal relationships. But she does it so well with such an honesty. Like I really loved Normal People but also reading it was excruciating because of how deeply she made me feel these characters feelings.
Just watched your video, then came here! I also didn’t love Conversations with Friends so feel like I’ll have similar feelings to you, but the fence is a great place to be.

And where the beauty is hiding?? Aaaah just pls bury me with this book

I completely agree with you about the dinner party scene -- like it was so good I could not believe my eyes as I read it. I've never read Sally Rooney before, but I adored this and now will have to check out her other stuff.
I was just reading the Guardian's article about this book!! Miss Rooney continues to amaze us and dunk on whoever decided writing about love was silly and low brow
I just finished it, I cried and not even lying, hugged the book at the end because I loved it and wished it didn’t end 😌 everything you said summed it up perfectly, everyone should read this!
I feel like Jack needs to follow Rooney around on any book tours she does. He’d give an absolutely perfect introduction that makes you love the book, appreciate her literary style and it’s integration with her themes - before you've read the book or heard her speak.
I’ve never had a problem without the quotation marks, it somehow just ropes you in. You don’t see quotation marks in real life, people just speak. It’s so real.
You’re dead on about the quotation marks. At first I thought “ugh..” but I had just read handmaiden so I read on. It really began to flow because I somehow I always knew who was talking. Same thing with the little details Iremember reading in Normal People about Connell scraping off the label of a beer bottle. It’s little details like that that put me in this awkward position of being in a party where I don’t know anyone and the only thing to do is to anxiously pick at the beer bottle in my hand. I can’t wait to read Beautiful World.

i just got done with reading it. had to give myself a bit of time, it made me cry like a baby for some reason. i love your energy and remarks in this, they gave me relief. i got so wrapped up in this one hell of a book that it was exactly like you said, like i was a voyeur. there wasn't an instance when i loved each character perfectly: all four were so flawed, stumbling, frustrating. rooney has helped me find a bit of myself, and given clarity to what beauty is for me, again, more than ever. the misery surrounding us everyday, the surety of it threatening to engulf personal happiness was so perfectly portrayed. the social class commentary, the caustic dead-end towards which capitalism works, all of that was discussed as realistically and believably, with all the weariness and resentment and understanding, with the sometimes distanced, almost desensitised acceptance, as I've ever done myself, even if inside my head more than aloud. and through it all, always, always, this navigation of personal relationships. of love and friendship and sex. i think she outdid herself.
I loved Normal People and the way she never used quotations marks! It reminds me of a portuguese writer José Saramago that does NOT use any ponctuation besides commas and periods. It's a real challenge in the beginning but I always end up loving his books. Maybe you should try and read one of them some day. Love your videos!!

I read it a few weeks ago (cheers Sally) and I enjoyed it. However, for me, Normal People is still the best book she’s written. As the book is so character driven, rather than plot driven, I think it depends on which characters you identify with and what stage of your life you’re in as to what book you love the most. The only thing I didn’t like about BWWAY is the way that some of the emails felt very unrealistic; don’t get me wrong, me and my friends have intelligent conversations over text and in person but I don’t know many that would open an email talking about the Roman Empire!
I really liked this video Jack! It's so interesting to hear someone rave about something that differs from your opinion. I've only read Normal People by Sally Rooney... and I did not like it at all. I felt like I read the longest run on sentence ever and was bored with the characters. This was an interesting take... maybe I'll give this one a try!
I really want to read this book now. I picked up Conversations with Friends as my first Sally Rooney book and am so excited to read it. But this may be my 2nd Rooney book. 😉
Could you maybe do a video on het other books as well? I’ve never read any of her books and I am really excited to read them now! I sort of want to figure out which one to start with though☺️ so a video about the other books would be soooo great

The only thing I didn’t like about BWWAY is the way that some of the emails felt very unrealistic; don’t get me wrong, me and my friends have intelligent conversations over text and in person but I don’t know many that would open an email talking about the Roman Empire!
Loved this video: It's making more excited to read this book.
lil late on the video but i got recommended this when i started this book literally yesterday. its seriously scary how social media knows sm helpp
Have you ever read José Saramago? He doesn’t uses quotations marks. I recommend Blindness, one of my favorite books ever!
Thank you Jack for your amazing content and some ✨great✨ recommendations!
Love the reading vlogs
Started this book only up to chapter 4 and its sooo good already the characters are quirky funny. I wanna see where this goes
preordered it! Can't wait, Autumn weather & this lovely book.
A reading vlog? No….more like 13 minutes of jack fanboying over sally Rooney!!!
I just finished this book. I loved it so much.
I really want to read this book now. I picked up Conversations with Friends as my first Sally Rooney book and am so excited to read it. But this may be my 2nd Rooney book. 😉
you're a sweetheart, thaaaanks for this
I love sally Rooney she is so talented!
Could you maybe do a video on het other books as well? I’ve never read any of her books and I am really excited to read them now! I sort of want to figure out which one to start with though☺️ so a video about the other books would be soooo great
PERFECT timing, I just finished reading it myself. ☺️
so now you've read the book, can you read every book that the characters recommend in it please? that would be super interesting!
Jack you're a cool guy. Hope to run into you in London some time and talk to you about books. Just finished reading conversations with friends and can't wait to read this too!
