    J.C. the Hi-Rail wheels only carry a few hundred pounds and are used to guide the vehicle while on the rail . It's a little odd as you don't steer the vehicle , it follows the rail . I installed hundreds of hi-rail attachments while working for Union Pacific Railroad here in Arkansas .

    Nice set air horns behind the grill 👍

  • @tedbownas2748

    The high rail wheels ride on the rail, but only to guide the truck. The offset tires ride along the top of the running rail, and the truck is driven by the tires on top of the rail. They often have accessory horns because high rail trucks are considered a rail vehicle when they're on the rails, and they have to sound an air horn at grade crossings just like a train does. They usually also have red auxiliary lights in front and rear because anything operating on the rails is required to display red marker lights to the opposite direction of travel. Since high rail trucks can operate forward or backward, they have to be able to display taillights on either end.

      If you look in the video when JC shows the hydraulic set up for the front , you can see the air horns at 31:25 just peeking out in between the grill and the radiator, so your correct!

      i have bought several high rail trucks through out the years...i have never had any with red light in the front tho.....i knew the steel wheels were only for guiding and not load carrying....they are usually great running and driving trucks...perfect for parts

    1) Maybe I can be last person to notice that you have a hydraulic leak in the Gradall. The forks on the lift were noticeably lowering. Just another thing to put on the Gradall to do list.
    2) If you've had several of these railroad trucks in you should know if the track gauge axles etc. have any value to the companies that modify trucks for the railroads.

    • @j.c.smithprojects

      what you were seeing was where i cut the video in efforts to shorten the run time. it doesnt drift at all. most the time no one want the old high rail parts....it is just scrap metal.

    It's hard to believe that 10 years can do so much damage to a vehicle. I've got a 22 year old truck thats been minimally maintained and other than one cab mount being fixed it's completely rust free. All original

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 лет назад +1

      here in my area it is not uncommon to see a vehicle a few years old developing rust....these truck have places that are more prone to rust than other also.

      vfl rockytop that’s obviously ex-CSX, we use, abuse and lose Trucks on a predetermined schedule. I would guess a short line ran this truck after we took it out of fleet service, they’re typically not as concerned with appearance.

    It might be worth salvaging the extra light units off the high rail units, they're probably top-quality lights and having some spare work lights is always useful if you work on trucks...

    JC- In one of your videos you commented regarding the removal of the cab on a CC versus a EC versus a SC. I have a 2000 F-350 CC. I want to remove both the bed and the cab so that I can rust-proof the frame. If I removed both of them but left the engine in, would the balance of the remaining truck be unstable/dangerous? Would it tip over onto its nose? I would think not given that the cg must be located behind the front axle, even when both the cab and the bed removed, but wanted to verify that with an expert on the subject of cab/bed removal such as yourself. Thanks!

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 лет назад +1

      jerry, i am not an expert at all. i remove the beds and cabs of these trucks regularly with no troubles at all. the remaining parts and the chassis were very stable and fairly easy to maneuver around.

    • @RX7GSLSEowner
      @RX7GSLSEowner 6 лет назад

      Ok thank you for the reply JC! And given the frequency and number of removals that you've completed, you're an expert in my book! Keep up the good work; I've binged watched until I've seen every video you've made. :)

    Hey JC- Seeing you pull the bed of that truck reminded me of a question. Can you see any way of adding a second fuel tank to the midship area, on the passenger side off the frame, directly opposite the stock tank? I'd like a second tank but don't want to sacrifice the spare tire to do so. Thanks

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 лет назад

      No i dont. the exhaust is on the other side. i dont see any room for any other tank inside the frame anywhere.

    • @RX7GSLSEowner
      @RX7GSLSEowner 6 лет назад
