Used to work on Birdcage Walk and sit on the grass in the Park for my lunch. Squirrels would run up and move my skirt a bit so that they could dig up some of their acorns which they had buried there before the winter....a privilege to be involved I felt!!!

Have visited London twice (and would love to visit again). First time in 2010 and again in 2018. So much beauty and history. I loved watching the changing of the guards and visiting Buckingham Palace. Love your channel and the new format works for me. Watching from Melbourne Australia. 🇦🇺

Many of the trees edging this Park are 'London Plane trees' - provide lovely shades for the crowds..
In the Sixties we always thought all the different spies from everywhere would meet on the St J's Park bridge for their secret discussions and transfer of notes etc.! Think those days are gone...but maybe not!!

Yes! It really is.. situated in the heart of London. :)
'chest plate' is a cuirass, from the french language. Very heavy and hot to wear. The weight of the armour the Trooper wears means that when he has to dismount from his horse he will 'hit' the opposite flank of the horse, who will then know that the weight of his rider to shift a bit more to one side than the other. People think the trooper is being cruel...no - the horse is trained to adjust his own stance to accommodate the Trooper dismounting. Clever??

Some of these soldiers have never ridden a horse before. Some may have only just finished their 8 week course. It is not a case as soon as they are in the Blue and Royals they learn to ride. No, first and foremost they are soldiers and on the front line, and possibly fought in Afghanistan. As they have ceremonial duties they then have to learn to ride a horse. Very daunting as the horses are perhaps 19 or 20 hands high. Learn to fall off, walking, trotting, jumping over small jumps all in 8 weeks. This could be the first time that they have been on ceremonial duty. Please note that are also carrying their swords in their right hand (most are predominantly right handed) so all control of the horse is in the left hand and in their legs. Extremely daunting for the first few times. Well done to all of them.

sorry if I'm being a tad picky but the Troops carry swords rather than sabres I believe....certainly the Office will say 'carry swords' when they use them to 'salute' with right hand and guide the reins with the left hand. Is a sabre a slightly different shape, does anyone know?

Why do they ride with their swords out?
Ready to use if threatened, they would be killed in the time it took to get the sword out of the scabbard. They are real swords and kept very sharp.
