@@markodea interesting to hear your opinion Mark, especially with you living in Malaysia and being a fan or ex-fan of the 1975. I'd be gutted if I was at the festival and I don't know enough to comment on what affect it will have on Malaysians in the lgbtqia+ community. I do think that the organisers of the festival should have done their own research more thoroughly on the band though. You don't have to look too far to see that The 1975 have already been banned in Dubai for speaking out on this exact subject and that Matt Healy is clearly speaking out often and openly on stage. Did they really find it such a shock or were they maybe expecting some sort of political statement and if so, what was the agenda 🤷‍♂️ I think Matt Healy is going through some difficult times in general right now. He has been slammed by the western media and social media for the past 4 months and think he is being directed off a cliff edge personally. I think he's furious with the world and unfortunately, Malaysia was his tipping point and I'm sorry you guys had to witness it. Being young in the city, believe and say something! 😉

Thank you for voicing your opinions.
    YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!
Now 1975 had added salt to big wounds ...OUCH!!
So close to 6 States' Election whereby the Extremists & Oppositions.
Matt Healy is an EGOISTIC & NARCISSISTIC Person.
Why can't he just be just a musician to his fans and not mix politics or criticise any govt & other religion?
If he disliked so much of the laws of Malaysia..,WHY did he agree to come to Malaysia ?
Just to prove his point, he doesn't care what happens to his fans or fans of musicor for other musicians & bands who want to perform in Malaysia for their fans.
To Matt Healy, Whatever happened, he will still be paid.
Sadly, because of his SELFISH Actions , Good Vibes got cancelled..
    &
Kid Laroi had to perform inside a hotel lobby..
#SHOUT OUT for The Kid Laroi
    COLDPLAY almost got cancelled..
Many fans were hoping to get 2 days from Coldplay because tickets were sold out within hrs.
COLDPLAY will be performing in Singapore for 6 DAYS !!! in Jan 2024.
Musicians had gone through tough times like all for almost 2 yrs of pandemic.
That is why they are going round the world to perform to their fans.
1975 should APOLOGISE TO THE FANS & PAY for it.
Matt Healy's DISGUSTING BEHAVIOUR DRUNK, PROBABLY ON DRUGS too "perform" on stage...as a political critic. SO UNPROFESSIONAL.
WHAT KIND OF MORON WOULD GO TO SOMEONE'S HOME & CRITICISE THEIR HOUSE RULES?

@@asain3586 I know all about Malaysia and its racist laws that discriminate against anyone who isn't Malay. Where have these laws and politics based on racial supremacy got you? Nowhere!
The Malays and their silly religion destroyed all potential Malaysia had at independence. Not being held back by either, Singapore managed to achieve fully developed, first world status by 1990 the same year Malaysia introduced its Wawasan 2020 program to do the same. Come completion in 2020 it had failed miserably and in some aspects the country was worse off than when it started. The SPV 2030 extension, despite only running for three years, is also clearly failing.
"Tolerance" in Malaysia applies only to one race, the Malays. All other groups get on fine with everyone else but you Malays are deeply resentful of the success of others. Success, achieved through hard work. You Malays want what they have but not to have to work for it. "Tolerance" is telling you not to start another massacre like you did in 1969 something you're closer to now that at any time since then.
I don't need to "research" because I know how Malaysia works better than you do. Malaysia is probably past the tipping point but unless you address racial issues, and stop the descent into the abyss of conservative Islam, there is no positive future.

I attended Good Vibes Festival probably 8-10 years ago, and it is a cool, fun, free event for young people which must be supported all the way by everyone. My opinion on LGBT is that there are many non-muslims who are against it too or at least don't agree same sex marriage etc is legal, it's more of a Western narrative rather than seeing it from an angle of religion alone. I think Malaysia especially with the current government is pretty open, progressive and welcome freedom of expression, but, there are things you should not touch on. Muse, Kreator, Nofx, Linkin Park, The Strokes, Napalm Death dulu datang waktu Malaysia sangat ketat nak bawa artis luar ke sini. Proses nak bawa diaorang pun leceh. Sekarang ni tiba-tiba jadi hal macam ni. Memang akan beri kesan untuk penganjuran akan datang. Sebagai artis & berada di tempat orang, dia patut datang buat persembahan sahaja. The organisers took a big risk to bring them here, notwithstanding the frontman's past behaviours, and have even appealed and guaranteed good behaviour, so I can't say they were totally blameless. The ironic thing is that the band played 2 nights in Singapore before Good Vibes, and nothing major happened there, so perhaps Malaysian organisers and authorities need to look into that as well.

Hi Mark - thanks for the video and I do understand what you trying to say in your view of respecting culture/personal views etc.
My concern is that none of the focus (or responsibility) here is on the actual Malaysian government, who decided to cancel the entire festival on the back of the brief comments made on-stage. I, personally, would argue to respect the artists autonomy to speak their views on what they believe is right. If people disagree, it is up to them. It also really didn't go on for that long.
From my point of view it appears an extreme action to cancel the entire festival because a foreign singer made some "objectionable" comments in some peoples view. Hence, the responsibility of lost opportunities and profits of involved artists/vendors should be placed on the government. The comments made were also pretty brief and they did not go on for that long about it. I understand it is a complicated situation with a muslim-majority country, but I feel like you are sidelining an important moral argument concerning the rights of LGBT people which Matty decided to voice. You cannot hold a band accountable for all these losses when it was completely not intent.
All this "disharmony" from this is much more reflective on the fragility of the government not to trust their citizens to make their own judgement about what was said, in place of a progressive front man who is known for making off the cuff comments about a variety of topics and issues (a quick RUclips search will reveal a lot of examples!). I think it is kind of dangerous rhetoric to blame the minor actions of the band to the clear over-reaction of the Malaysian government. Do they not believe their citizens can make up their own mind about what he said, without dismantling an entire festival? The crowd even cheered!
Anyway, just wanted to share my two cents and a different viewpoint. I respect yours and the citizens of Malaysia. Giving my best to all music lovers in Malaysia and hope you guys get the chance to enjoy more shows soon. :)
P.S. I will say that I thought relating this to the situation with the Qatar World Cup was in poor taste. Given that is an international tournament of the highest order - it is understandable that LGBT players and fans all over the world who have every right to participate were unhappy/upset about this - in a country where being gay is constituionally illegal and can thus be legally given the death penalty. I think saying "nobody is right and nobody is wrong" is too absolutist and to be honest, a bit of a cop out

There are extremists everywhere. Like you said, Malaysia is in a perpetual delicate balance of so much diversity and thus we had to be extremely strict towards anything that could possibly disrupt this delicate harmony.
1975 sucks hard because they target such unprecedented harmony trying to create discord.
FYI, google 13th May 1969 and you can see why the anti-harmony crimes are treated so harshly in Malaysia.

When I first heard that the 1975 was gonna be performing in Malaysia , I had doubts knowing how this band would drink and smoke on stage. How will the government handle this situation? And then boom, Matt just had to do what he always do (preaching his beliefs) in Malaysia. Since then , I stopped listening to their songs and lost respect in the band. It may sound silly, but I never thought I have to ‘unlike’ my favourite band in my life because outsiders are not allowed to talk bad shit about my beloved country !

And what @suria commented above is undeniably true. Homosexuality is not only prohibited by the Muslim community but is also forbidden in Christianity & opposed by the Western people as well. Try & search about the Spencer Church burning as an instance, apparently the church supported the pride movement - a 100+ years old church was struck by lightning. Lots of female singers wear more appropriate clothing, while nowadays, it's just underwear. It's like singing skill & music are not enough to sell their songs. I remember 90s female singers like Leigh Nash, Jewel, Jennifer Paige, etc wore modest clothing compared to lady gaga, Britney, Beyonce, etc. Not to mention the explicit words in the lyrics.

I respected the Law in the UK, regardless my own beliefs. Made a lot of friends all over the world, learned their different cultures and and tried to understand why they think what they think.
People like Matt Healy is someone who would say diversity is a great things, but only diversity in skin colours and tones. He lives in his own bubble, even when he travelled to another countries, never tried to learn other cultures and beliefs. I do hope one he will change his way and mind, be a better person, so that people like you Mr Odea, and his other fans here in Malaysia, can enjoy his songs again.
ps/ I have never heard of him nor his band. But I am not kinda of person that wish harms to others (unless a war criminals of course, that different story) I believe people can change and be a better person. Number 2: I only pray and wish one day they would change, be a better respectful person so that people like Mark Odea, who is big fan of him can enjoy their songs again.
Number 3: I am kinda person who never believe in fighting fire with fire, we should fight fire with water. The Muslim's prophet once had a neighbour who loved throwing stones at him and he did nothing. One day, she wasn't throwing stones no more, and our prophet went to visit her and found out she was ill. He decided to feed her instead. She changed and embraced Islam,
That's my 2 cents. Yes, I was angry initially, but I need to be a bigger person. I can't change the past, but what I can do is trying to create a better future.

Artists today are now expected to share their beliefs about different issues and use Instagram and concerts as a platform for preaching. They are paid to sing that’s the bottom line and not paid to politicise or share their opinions on things. Malaysia is diverse, it’s so important to be mindful of others. We truly live in a multicultural society. The fact that Sabrina Carpenter performed was already huge and now 1975 comes and just ruins the Good Vibes. Whyyyy. It’s not the organiser’s fault guys, don’t ask for a refund because they can go bankrupt.

Like you said, the selfish actions of 1975 not only affected themselves and their reputation but thousands of others financially when they literally did nothing wrong.I just hope the government is sensible enough to know that this was an outlier and wont impose needless restrictions. On another note, if they were trying to show support for the LGBT community in their own stupid way, they've probably set them back by years of progress towards acceptance.
