I can imagine the people in the 70s when this movie came out.
They be watching this intro thinking "Oh this looks like this will be a nice movie."
    Little did they know...

+Oscar Quinones It barely played anywhere when it was new. Even United Artists, its distributor, decided not to release it under United Artists. So, they invented a whole new label name, 'Zebra Films', to front for them. 'Zebra' was only used once, to release that film. It was really UA, but they were apparently hiding that fact. In the States, it didn't open until September 1977. It's US premiere was a screening at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. It opened right after that, in just one theater in NYC. After a week or two, it opened at one theater in LA. It ultimately only played in five theaters in three cities for about a week. Then, it was gone. Out of circulation in the US for many years. It wasn't more widely seen until its 1991 VHS release by Water Bearer Films. The Criterion DVD came along in 1998. In its theatrical run, there was even little to no marketing for it, either. Like a dirty secret. In NYC, the NY Times newspaper ad was simply a plain, black box that read, "The final vision of a controversial filmmaker. Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom", A disturbing motion picture for mature audiences who are prepared to view it. No One Under 17 Will Be Admitted." In LA, there was no ads for it.

Oscar Quinones I’ve seen more disturbing films than this. It set a perfect example on Facism. When I discovered that Willem Dafoe played as Pier Paolo Pasolini... my thought was “ What was Willem’s thought on Salo?”. Salo seemed like a good film because it perfectly captured Facism. And also it had very good music and cinematography and it was well shot.

Oscar Quinones that’s probably what people thought of A Clockwork Orange when it came out. This decade people think of it as a black comedy which Malcolm McDowell said so. He played as the main character in A Clockwork Orange.
If you haven’t seen A Clockwork Orange you should see it. I put A Clockwork Orange (1971) as my favourite film ever and Salo would be in between 10 and 20 on my film favourites. Caligula (1979) is Number 10 And Last Tango In Paris (1972) is Number 7. Bernardo Bertolucci was good friends with Signore Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Pasolini died few weeks after " Salò ", he take off Power mask and he show us their real face.
      He is....Hero.
If you are interested you can research also Rino Gaetano ( died in 1981 ) our best singer, in my opinion...for his voice, words, lyrics etc etc.
And, Carmelo Bene, ( died in 2007)....
      They are my favorite..."teachers".
      They all died....not accidentally.

It actually used to be standard practice to put the credits at the beginning of a film, and it was for quite some time. But in this case, yes, it was a good call. ;-) John Waters said the end of Salò is his favorite ending to any film, and I can see why. The framing device of "Son tanto triste" (this is Ennio Morricone's of that song, by A. Bracchi and F. Ansaldo) is beautifully done: it occurs in the opening credits, on the piano at the beginning of the Girone delle manie, in an extended appearance at the end of the Girone delle manie (half-way point of the movie, and the most beautiful scene), and then on the radio at the end as the two evil boys dance as carnage is going on outside.
Salò, by the way, is the perfect film for the Trump era. Signora Maggi *IS* Kellyanne.

This film was absolutely the most disturbing thing i have ever viewed.
    1) The dinner scene
    2) The plot of the film itself
    3) The extreme imagery
    4) The pain/sorrow you feel for both the characters AND the actors portraying those characters
    5) The most vividly disgusting stories told by the prostitute characters, while they smile joyfully telling their tales of extreme childhood sex
    6) The ending that made you lose faith in all humanity
This film will take a part of your soul you won't get back.

    • @ianchristopher9422

And one of the most disturbing aspects of the movie was the fact that it was made by a very important movie company The United Artists not a cheap low-key company that makes shocking movies for money it was an important studio that made such a terryfing movie. Note now the movie is distributed by MGM since United Artists was sold to them since the studio's financial failure (because of Michael Cimino's box office bomb Heaven's Gate in 1980).

People who are interested in this movie because of violent scenes, will be disappointed. This movie is violent, but you can't compare it with splatter or horror-movies.
The 120 Days of Sodom is true horror, it's a movie about decadence and depravity. I've seen a lot of cruel and disturbing films (Ichi the killer, Ginea pig, etc.), but this flick sets the bar, when it comes to cruelness. You should check some reviews, before watching it.

a haunting film. the shit eating and sodomy were what made this film controversial back in the day but the age of the cast is what's most objectionable nowadays. just like Pink Flamingos (chicken scene + public indecency), you couldn't make this film today -- society has become more repressive -- though I'm not sure that's a bad thing. What is criminal is that Pasolini was castrated and run over repeatedly for making this film while Larry Clark's reputation abates one sleazy mediocrity after another.

lol this would make a perfect song for a wedding dance!
-Oh! this is such a lovely music, where did you get it?
-It's from a movie where some kids are being physically, mentally and sexually tortured, and also forced to eat their own shit by a group of fascists
    -O.O

it sucks that the majority of the releases of salo are bootlegs, the original one they released in 98 is "the rarest of the rare" of dvd's

Are you sure that this movie is based on a true story?
Also, I really liked another Italian movie named - "Malena". That was also set in WW2 times. Have you seen Malena and do you know if that is based on a true story? Thank you.

it's hard to find. if you have any kind of specialty movie rental store in your area, they'll probably have it.
otherwise, you can probably find it somewhere on the net. i've found a few torrents before-
on another note, does anyone know the name of this song? I'd really love to know

I'm a really emotional (kinda squeamish) person when it comes to movies, and after reading a lot of reviews about this movie and the meaning behind it, I really want to see this movie, but maybe in a few years after I get my psychology degree. I think I'll be able to appreciate it much more when that time rolls around. It's so fucked up how this relaxing music plays especially because of what comes later... =/

You can get it on ebay. They have import all-region DVD's (not criterion, unless you wanna pay a lot of money, but its not worth that much).

The plot of Salo states that 9 boys and 9 girls each are kidnapped. I'm looking from 0:25-0:40 for the cast of the victims and there are only 8. Where are the other 2 boy and girl?

This film is not an exploitation film. Anyone that watches it based on that assumption is missing the whole idea of the movie. Pasolini made this film as an indictment of society, culture, and history. The film is about fascism, neo-fascism, and capitalism, and the images on the screen are not to be taken at face value, but as metaphors for contemporary society and politics. The sexual depravity shown on the screen, the coprophagy, the torture, it is all symbolic.

  • @ManuelBelli

If you lack any of these three elements, don't watch the movie because you will not get it at all. Again, don't watch this movie at face value. It is one of the sickest, most disturbing films ever made, and it is that way for a reason. Not for shock value or to get banned in country after country, but to make a statement. This film is so dangerous that it is believed by many that Pasolini was assassinated for making it. If everyone got this movie, the world would be in deep trouble.
