At the time this was filmed, my parents were young and living in the city. They were married in 1949. After the war a lot of houses started being built in the suburbs and my parents bought one in 1958 but before then, we lived on Marmora Avenue. I remember seeing these cars in my baby pictures. The electric buses were still running and my mom and aunt knew the numbers of every street. (Chicago streets are mostly a grid with some diagonal streets that used to be Native American trails.) Thanks for letting me live in their time for just a while.
Chicago is noted for some of the earliest skyscrapers, which look much better than contemporary "internationalist style" versions. It's great seeing these buildings in period with clear footage. THX, NASS.
Note at 5:50 in the distance a single, rapid transit car (by the ARMOUR sign) on the old stock yards, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) line. This route was discontinued in October 1957. Thanks for sharing this indeed early 1950s footage of Chicago!

Omg Small world!! I live on that corner NOW in a 1924 Coop building. We just celebrated 100 years. And yes, there are images of Catalpa and the nearby Senn High School.
That’s wild!!! I live at the corner of Catalpa and Winthrop NOW, for the past 16 years! We are a coop and just celebrated our centennial (1924)! I was thrilled to see a glimpse of the old Edgewater neighborhood and Senn High School! Small world indeed!
The Ginger Rogers movie was 1951. I was born there in 1958, nice to see it like it used to be. Palmolive building searchlight, all the iconic buildings, the El, the museums, Marshall Field's, and snow.
So beautiful architectures. How much preserve today? Old city have soul, beautiful soul. Love it. It's inspired to me. Thank You, thanks very much for this video.
My grandparents both grew up in Chicago and moved here to FL the 70s. The used to tell me how much fun they had in the 50s before they started having kids (7!)
I was born also in 1955, only over the pond. When I came here in '77, I expected to experience everything I read n heard about America. Nothing was true, although back then America was a lot better place. Now, communism in Poland is none, but here is coming in full bloom, by means of garbage from other poor countries, along with the domestic marginalised citizens. Lies, theft and deception.
I'll say this as someone who has traveled all over the world, and as someone who was born, raised, and continue to live on The North Side. Chicago is the HEART OF AMERICA! Save Chicago, save America. It is an incredibly beautiful city that has been hurt by people with LOW CHARACTER. It represents everything amazing about our country. It is also the only major American city that is American. New York was settled by the Dutch. Los Angeles was settled by the Spanish.
We used to put on our very best clothes to go downtown state street in Chicago , and look at the holiday scenery displays at , Carson Peire Scott , Sears , Marshall Fields , Goldblatts , Montgomery Wards , they're all gone now , State street these days is just an empty canyon ,
You must look forward not back. Many immigrants come here and see much better than where they come from . They also work very hard , long hours because they have a dream
My earthly hometown is always a very family oriented place. Yes, there are dangerous parts of Chicago, but not the whole. Living here my whole life, it's 30%, I'd say. 😊 😊
A beautiful, evocative restoration. It's reassuring to know that Grant Park (seen at 0:11 and fleetingly afterwards) remains unadulterated by buildings To think, too, that the children queuing to enter what looks to be a movie show (at 2:05) are (if still with us) now around eighty years old. Many thanks!
Fantastic job with this one. It was almost certainly shot during the winter of 1950-51. The movie "Branded" was released just before Christmas of 1950.
Once a beautiful city and the politicians have destroyed it. RIP great old city. Your majestic beauty will never return. I am so glad I got to see the real you before the downfall.
This was great to see. I own a 1950 Chevy fleetline and it looks just like it should have been in this video. I love how the women were dressed. It's a time gone by for sure. Thank you for this
Man, I almost wish I could go back there! HAHA Can't imagine life with party line phones and encyclopedias! I grew up on the Southwest side and remember when it was a big deal when my Dad took us downtown! The only thing is I don't remember red busses - from my recollection, they were that greenish color and cream ... Great video and thanks for sharing!

Lovely! I even saw a glimpse of my own neighborhood! The only thing that wasn’t Chicago was the exterior shot of a palm tree 😂 but otherwise this was exceptional!
