Jim was a bodybuilder whose heyday was in the 60s. By this time the drugs had evolved because of the Russian scientist's efforts for the Olympic weightlifting team. Also, Jim had wide hips and beefy thighs which over powered his calves, and did not possess the shoulder-to-waist differential that Reeves had. (I believe Reeves had a 24-inch difference Chest 54 inches and waist 30.) Try finding that in today's modern bodybuilders. Reeves had a neck, arm, and calf measurement of 18.5 inches. The level of precision in Steve Reeves's physique was astounding and most novice lifters really don't understand what he was trying to achieve. Reg Park found out the hard way. Haislop was 5'11 215 and Reeves was 6"0 215 so not an incredible difference. After Jim got beaten by Boyer Coe a few times he gave it up as he was never really able to get his conditioning right. He was a great nonetheless and most forget about what he was able to achieve which was significant.
IF I'm recalling accurately (I'm age 67, been bodybuilding since beginning at age 15 in 1971), Schwarzenegger stated at least once that actually Steve Reeves was his initial goal-model, but that he realized early that his structure and proportion potential was more like Reg Park's than Reeves', so he switched to Park as his goal-model.
Love to hear Ken talk about his movie and TV roles and not just Pumping Iron, but also Stay Hungry, Hart to Hart, and Kill the Golden Goose where he plays a muscle man taken out by a ruthless hitman...with a fork!!
Reeves was indefinite blueprint for all. No question about it. Then and now ( with most). I have no doubt that any pioneer of that era would want to look like the abominations we have today.
Ken Waller was both massive and balanced. His symmetry was vastly overlooked. Many of us from that era remember just how special Ken was. Today's bodybuilders are a trainwreck
i personally like streve reeve4s because he didn't look thick. He looked wide from the front but from the side he was very lean. any ways how to replicate that?
The bicep attaches to the top of the humerus....not the shoulder area. It seems very possible to build large arms and still have small deltoids.... although I'm interested in Ken's opinion.
Interesting, you never hear his name mentioned. I had an encounter with him at a store in Southern California, and sorry to say, but he was a real jerk, but he was huge.
Great video as usual! The arm measurement he discussed makes me think of Arthur Jones talking about how he measured Sergio and Arnolds arms - flexed and cold. He stated Arnold's was 19 5/8". IF this were true, then without a doubt, it was when Arnold was off gear and downsized, as he always got when off season. When ON, Arnold's guns were friggin' MASSIVE. Not to mention Arnold had the perfect arm for getting the most out of a measurement due to his insanely high biceps peak. I myself am 6'0 tall, weigh 255 lbs and have the same arm measurement as Ken - 19 1/2" cold & 20 1/4" pumped. Arnolds arms when ON DWARF mine. He easily had to have a 21 1/2" cold arm and prolly 22 1/2" pumped (which was what his arm was reported back in his day). Not to mention his arms dwarfed Kens arms too.
I was waiting for what Arnolds arm measured . . . Waller said his own were 20 1/4, of course Arnold had the better arms but it would have been interesting to see what they measured. Good interview Golden Era !
Steve Reeves was Only 21 years old when he Won the 1947 Mr. America. All of his Photos were taken Cold and Unpumped. In his Era it was considered Fake or Cheating if you Pumped Up before a Competition or having your muscle measurements taken. Steve Reeves was 6'1" 215lbs with "Cold" 18.5" Arms, Neck & Calves. A 52" Chest, 26" Thighs and a Tiny 29" Waist. Frank Zane and Steve Reeves had the Same Size Waist except that Steve was 4" Taller and 30lbs Heavier! 21 year old Steve Reeves would've Absolutely Destroyed 21 year old Arnold Schwarzenegger and 21 year old Frank Zane! Steve was a 100% Lifetime Natural Bodybuilder. Before you Naysayers BullSht remember that it's a Proven FACT that the Men of Steve Reeves Era had Triple the Testosterone that the Young Men of Today have...
Ken just wanted the all the women that Steve Reeves had chasing him. Loved his tank top story, I still have some Gold's gym swag from the early 80's. I also was inspired by Steve Reeves in the 2 Hercules movies & The Slave.
That's no surprise as to WHY! STEVE REEVES is the GREATEST OF ALL TIME! PERIOD!
Maybe, but to me he looked more like a fitness model to me. No offence to Steve.
Disagree.
Serge Nubret was far more impressive and aesthetic than Steve Reeves, so was Zane in 77,78 and 79
Ken was definitely more symmetrical than most BB's and that's why I really appreciated his physique.
Looking back, if he had better tanning back then he would have accomplished even more. It does make a big difference.
@@robertarnold7187 Being fair skinned myself, although not red headed fair like Ken, I would agree.
I love these interviews, especially with Ken Waller.
It's amazing that most of the golden era bodybuilders like Arnold himself liked Steve the real *men's physic* bodybuilder
steve reeves was just amazing and i bet he had a better phone back then than ken waller has now😂🖤
What's a phone back?
The Arnold is Numero Uno shirt in the photo would be a great retro t- shirt & these Waller interviews have been great!
Jim Haislop had the symmetry, musculature of Steve Reeves but was bigger. Shoulder to waist ratio was fantastic & had very muscular, defined legs.

Ken had more of a Greek Heracles type of build. Which is excellent.
Never try to be someone you are not.
Appreciate your own being.
Mr. Reeves was a God 💪🏽
I would say a beautiful Adam
Marvelous video Carlos! Always appreciating your rare finds
Love to hear Ken talk about his movie and TV roles and not just Pumping Iron, but also Stay Hungry, Hart to Hart, and Kill the Golden Goose where he plays a muscle man taken out by a ruthless hitman...with a fork!!
Thanks, Golden Era Bookworm!

DAMMMMN, Off The Chain video. Man, Ken is BADA$$. Great episode, man. Respect.

Modern bodybuilding is a wasteland of injured, debilitated and dead bodybuilders.
Nothing worse than when a dead guy gets on stage and starts posing. It's just not natural.

chris jones just gave you a shoutout!
I'd love to hear an interview with Kalman Szkalak.
Interesting, you never hear his name mentioned. I had an encounter with him at a store in Southern California, and sorry to say, but he was a real jerk, but he was huge.
That is unfortunate. @@stevepick9527

21 is so hard to achieve. at most i could get 17 simply because I'm natural and 5'9
Symmetry is when the left side resembles the right side. He was chasing proportion.

Its more of the fame/recognition for the praise
BTW Andrew jacked is trying to bring back the golden era again ❤
Trying and failing😢
Great interview and not a reference to the tshirt thing!
If you didn't notice, my t-shirts are referenced 😁
I want my calves and arms to be the same too 😊

Yes. Just look at Reeves photos vs Joseph Baena to see a decent comparison.
18.25* not 18.5

Great Video, But the Sound 😢
The real Blonde bomber
He’s red can’t you see?
More like the Red Raider, if we're really going to nickname him that lol
He's nickname was Big Red!
😮My God, that sounds like a old woman.
