Aye! You pulled the trigger on a RB5009! Have fun! It's an incredible little box. I got mine recently and it's been working a treat. The builtin Wireguard is very nice thanks to routerOS v7.
Man ... you are funny ... Indeed the initial config is plug and play, but the depth of the RouterOS is incredible. The best part is the firewall: I learned to create port knocking to allow access only to myself and brute force blocker; after 3 tries it adds the address to blocklist for a set amount of time ... I think Mikrotik is awesome!!!
I was really expecting even the initial setup to involve some kind of tinkering. So happy I was wrong. Wow your Firewall example sounds so good. So much more for me to explore. Thanks for the tips.
@@PaulWarrenEaton The initial setup is easy ... this is the kind of router that you can use from home until in a data center ... in my town there is an ISP that uses mikrotik on the last mile for connection. So cable from modem goes into 2.5g port? computer plugged into 1 gig port? why carn't it output 2.5g straight into computer? can you test 1 gig sqm functionality plz?
Yes that’s correct for the default setup. But then when connected to the unit it’s possible to configure ports differently so you don’t need to use the 2.5g port for the modem. Which in my case is a waste given that my internet is rated a max download speed of 1g. Hoping to do some more tests soon. 1 Gbps I can do. Later I’ll look at some devices at 10 Gbps. But need to buy more gear first.
Wohoo! Jump in and get started. It seems easier than I was expecting. Thanks for your comment. Ok I’ll look at how to do some short overview of some of the other features.
Hi! I wolud like to see a detailed video about all the possible configurations of this router. It seems to me to be a really nice piece of equipment ;)
Usually you will still have a modem in between the ISP and this router. In my setup I have a modem running in bridge mode, so the modem doesn’t do much but it’s still needed to connect to the ISP. With the RB5009 you will still need a modem.
yes you can and also pppoe just you need to know how, but i prefer erasing the default settings and configure everything myself, thats upto you, and that specific router is quite powerful for a home or small business
Yes! Keen to hear how you go and very happy to read any tips you discover along the way. So many features in this unit that I don’t know how I can even come close to understanding them all.
@@PaulWarrenEaton Just installed the MikroTik today in my network (replaced the Juniper SRX220H2), and i'm loving it! Setting up everything is really easy and VPN server/clients are running.
Brilliant to hear! You clearly have more experience or time than me.. I’m yet to explore all the features. Good for you. When yours is done, come do mine? 🤣
Good ones to compare. At a quick glance the RB5009 just appears to be a newer version but with some extra performance and features. But less total ports. Perhaps it depends what you need in your setup. mikrotik.com/products/compare/RB4011iGSplusRM+RB5009UGplusSplusIN
4011 come with wifi while 5009 require additional wireless access point. 5009 comes with OS level 7 and hardware better than 4011 which come with level 7
This may be kind of odd question, but does yours have different serial number on the box and on the sticker bottom of the router itself? Just got mine and serial numbers on the box and on the router are otherwise the same, but last numbers are different.
Actually there are quick settings to handle that also in this router. Ok so this particular device from MikroTik is not meant to be plug&play. They make other devices for that ease. But I was (and still am) impressed that I got this router and the access point hooked up and running fairly easily. I was expecting hours of tinkering.
You're giving off a vaguely "Autralian Unabomber" vibe. I like it.
Love the channel and your content on here :D! Keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing more MIkroTik content from you ;)!
So nice of you to say! Thanks. Very encouraging and definitely I want to keep learning and exploring MikroTik. Thanks again.
I'm envious, I want one. They're great bits of kit, the answer to everything starting with 'Can I ...' with MikroTik is always yes.
Pleased to read I may have picked the right gear. Thank you.

Thanks. I have so much to learn but it feels like fun ahead.
Now I know you have one also, I’ll keep you in mind as my questions pop up. 😁

which router would you recommend for home use? What is a good authorized seller in the USA?
Thank you very helpful I just purchased this router.
Do u need to setup the firewall rules? Or it is good to go like home routers?
It’s good to go! Has basic rules all set up.
PWE you are a spliting image of my mind. I'm going get a router that I have no idea how to setup LOL
Yes that’s the way! I’m still lost with it but very happy. It’s a solid unit. You can also really just turn it on and let it run.

Great idea. Thanks.
What are your experience until now?

Oh yes. I’d happily buy the same again. Still working for me trouble free.
Just got mine today but haven't opened it yet. Would love to see another video about more features of this router. Thanks for the video!

Where did you purchase one of these? Been looking for one from UK and Ireland distributors on the mikrotik site but can't seem to find any.
I bought from this place. Getic(dot)com.
Very happy purchase and will gladly buy more again in the future from the same place.
This thing supports encrypted DNS? DNS over TLS and DNS over HTTPS?

Thanks for the suggestion. That would be quite a series of videos. So many features. But yeah why not! I’ll try to start digging into more detail.
Just a heads up. RouterOS 7.1 is now stable. I'd recommend an upgrade from the "temporary" firmware and a factory reset of this unit.
Thank you. Yes I’ll do that then. Much appreciated!
you're lucky they just caught the UHC suspect or would have called the cops on you 😂

As for your serial number mismatch.. well that’s weird. Just checked mine and they are the same on box and router. 🤔
Please use WINBOX from Mikrotik for configuration.
There's so much you can do with it, I don't know if I'm certified to give pointers but I can point to people who can 😅. Firewall time!
Firewall next then. 😎

plug&play device? ...what if your ISP requires a PPPoE connection to be properly set, not just a DHCP client on the Ethernet1 port?

You create PPPoE interface in the interface submenu.
