Wow you’re going to catch heat for not putting the all mighty RAGE #1 😂😂😂 you turned me on to Magnus. I can kick my self for not going to them years ago “ sorry uncle ted”😂 definitely wicked sharp and accurate 👍
Started shooting shwacker "levi morgan series " have yet to have a deer go more than 60 yards. Most around 40. The fact that the blades lock closed gives the ability to practice with exact arrow and braodhead that you will be hunting with. Big PLUS in my opinion
Definitely agree. Grim Reaper mechanicals have never failed me. They shoot true and are very dependable broad heads. I won’t use anything else, mechanical wise!
I would check out the SEVR 1.5 mechanical for deep penetration. With that rotating blade, it's probably the best design to counteract some of the common cons of using them over fixed. Plus I think the practice mode is an interesting feature. Plus, they are reasonably priced. I'd like to see a review on them.
I just love the content. I appreciate all that you do, as a new archer I have learned so much. I am using mechanicals because that’s what I have. But I’m open to change as I wade through all this. Keep up the videos and I will keep watching. I wanted to mention last Saturday I miss a doe on opening day here in NC, only because I set off the thumb release early as I was setting the pin on her. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Even though I missed everything else came together. Thanks again.
Switch to fixed as soon as you can. Mechanicals just introduce extra variables that could go wrong. Definitely look into thunderheads. Solid heads and affordable.
I've been shooting Iron Will broad heads for 3 years now. Awesome? Yes. Expensive? Yes. I do like how they fly and more importantly how they cut. Not sure if I'll be switching anytime soon. If I do though I've found the slick tricks to be rather intriguing.
NAP thunderheads, magnus, slick trick. In no particular order, but I've always come back to NAP. Just got the new 170 grain magnum thunderheads in the mail!
I’m all about fixed blades and the absolute necessity in tuned bows that goes along with, but I also always have a bow tuned with Spitfires to be relied on for windy days. Every deer shot with’m has opened on and cut the hair off the hide before producing a wound channel. Nuff said.
I shoot compound and crossbow. Have been using Grimm Reapers since I started hunting. Love them! Have 9 deer taken with them. Thinking about trying the new Muzzy One heads this year, to have a fixed head to hunt with, just because I have never used fixed heads before.
The new slick trick to me looks a lot like a tooth of the arrow broadhead. I agree with all your picks those would’ve been my exact picks to however I probably would’ve picked one of the G5 mechanicals over the steel head just for the simple fact is the dull blades those used to have.
QAD exodus #1 with the Grim Reaper 1 3/8" pro series a close 2nd. Don't be fooled if u find one or more blades closed on a Grim Reaper after passing through an animal. The rapid deceleration can and will do that.
I shot grim reaper 10 year ago and twice 1 of the blades didn't deploy. Then shot and liked nap killzone. Been back to fixed blade for the past few years.
This will be my 3rd year with grim reapers part#1803 1-3/8 cut. Shot wasp, and montec for a while killed with all. For me the flight accuracy of the grim reaper works. Only had one non pass through (imbedded in opposite shoulder). Tried to shoot G5 M3’s this past weekend. Four hours later they went in the drawer of waisted $$. Out of 6 could only bring one to within 3” of field point. Put bow tune back (I record all adjustments) reapers hit 1” from field points.
Hunted with fixed broad heads since the 80's and last year, I finally tried the Rage mechanical last year. Reason for the switch is because in my opinion, shot placement is the most important aspect of harvesting a deer/elk. Anything that can be done to improve shot placement should be done and mechanicals just fly better than a fixed blade. No issues with opening with all my testing. After using it hunting, got a nice 8 pointer, blood trail was large and better than most of the deer I had shot with my fixed blade broad heads. Entry wound looked like the size of a baseball, no doubt it was a well placed kill shot and no need for a lighted nock. I will stick with Rage until I have an issues.
Don't think my dad has shot anything other than G5 Montec for well over the last 10 years. I however am a fan of Magnus for fixed blades and Grim Reaper for mechs, but this year I'm giving Ozcut a run for the fixed blade head in my quiver due to a non-vented one piece construction, but also keeping a strong eye on the Grim Reaper 4 blade Hades for a "backup" incase Ozcut doesn't do it for me. Love the tips on Grim Reaper heads.
I use to shoot traditional but after 20 years of hauling steel in and out of Chicago my shoulders are full of arthritis. So unless you make your own bows and arrows you need to get off your pedistall. I shoot crossbows now because of injuries.
@@jowho9992 I also have a friend who is an over the road truck driver. Maybe home once every 4-6 weeks. For a couple days. Do you think he should have to shoot a compound he can only maybe get a a few times to practice a year. To me if don't have time to practice then it's best for you and animal to shoot with more accuracy less chance of wounding. Traditional archers say the same about compound bow hunters to lazy to make own bows and arrows. Again watch how you judge others when others can judge you the same.
Great video brother I love Grimm Reaper broadheads had great success with the razertip 1 inch 3/4 last year going to shoot the Whitetail special 2 inch cut this year good luck this year
I have Original Montec , Deadmeat, and Afflictor hybrids. They all shoot accurate and do the job well. The Montec will not feel as sharp because of the angle they are ground. But I still put it on the stone for a few strokes. The Deadmeat and Afflictors are sharp. And they are all made in the USA. Afflictor also has some fixed that I’m curious about. But just can’t let my Montecs go! Not yet anyway.
Ive never understood all the hatred for some broadheads....or types....or crossbows....or compounds. I use all kinds of broadheads...so do my grown kids. I also shoot my bow and a crossbow and then I also rifle and muzzle load hunt. I dont get a deer with all of them.....but still love being in the woods. If you are in the woods hunting....you are blessed to be enjoying nature.
Agree. The hunting community, and fishing too, can often be their own worst enemy. All the ANTIs are bad enough, we don't need fellow hunters/fishers doing their job for them. We need to support each other and be united, not divided. All the bickering against mechanical heads, crossbow users, it's nonsense, and just elitest attitudes. See it in fishing as well, usually with certain fly-guys having that elitest attitude.
When you start paying $100 or more for broadheads, take your pick in my opinion. I think it's a total wash at that point. Just pick the style and company you like the most!
I'm right handed but lost my right eye in a accident so have to use my left side so using a cross bow is much easier than using a compound or recurve/longbow ect. I am how ever Making a serious attempt at trying g to use a compound...
I love magnus buzz cuts. My Mech choice is the trypan the titanium ferrule is very durable but would like rage to make a trypan in 1 1/2 cut great vid Master Jack
I always come back to this vid. Its hilarious! I've been shooting magnus and grim reaper for 20ish years? I also killed an elk, yes an elk with the shockwave back in college when I was pulling change out of my ash trey to buy broadheads!
Magnus for me all the way. Ever since I got my hands on the Blackhornet Ser Razor in 2016 it's all I have used. Not interested in any other broadheads anymore. The Ser Razor is all I will ever need for the rest of my bow hunting life.
Thanks so much AJA for the super high quality videos! I am learning A Lot. I have recently acquired an old matthews solocam and am hoping to harvest turkeys in close quarters with it, at least to start. Any thoughts generally, on arrows, the Magnus Bullhead fixed blade or other broadheads you or the team here might share? Sort of thinking the "20 gauge" of archery setups ? Thanks again!
Maybe it's all from post production editing, but you are a funny guy, Nate. It's nice to laugh while watching your videos. I bet amongst your circle of friends, you have them in stitches. I can imagine that at your school, you are one of the favorite teachers (from those kids that don't hate school).
I will never shoot any broadhead other than a QAD exodus straight backs. Been shooting them for years. Killed many whitetails with them. Prior to that I used the Montechs. I don’t mess with mechanicals. I’ve tried them a few times and lost big bucks. And the deer I have recovered some of them only two of the blades opened up. I tried a few different rages, Grim Reaper’s, And the NAP spitfires as well as the Killzones. I keep my bow well tuned and only shoot fixed broadhead’s. In my opinion mechanicals are designed for people who shoot bows that are not tuned properly. If your shot placement is good you will have no issues Harvesting with a fixed broadhead
Sounds like you prefer 3-4 blade Broadheads over 2 blade ? If so curious why you feel that way. I shoot the NAP Slingblade. 1 7/8 inch cut , cheap, super accurate, no clips/ o rings, rear deployment, and tough. I also get great penetration too. You should check them out . Great info and video ! Keep up the great work !
I don't understand what the deal is with the Rage haters. I've shot Rage broadheads since they came out and only lost a couple deer that I hit in the shoulder bone ( not scapula). I've shot a couple thru the scapula and dead deer. Not so good shots (guts) dead deer. Excellent blood trails. The entry holes are huge and if you hit the opposite shoulder better blood trails. Whitetails in the Midwest where I'm at don't require fixed blades w heavy arrows, at least not in my experience.
Check out Thorn Broadheads they are by far the best i've tried they function perfectly and are super durable, I havent had a deer go more than 20 yards. They are also veteran owned and made in the USA.
Curious to know why you prefer G5 over QAD. I’ve tested both quite a bit, found QAD is more durable, makes a bigger hole and tends to fly better and quieter.
Great list outside of the Rocket one that you probably have to get via EBay or the like. I am sure that it’s an awesome head and nothing wrong with an old school favorite. Speaking of old school favorites I am sure that Muzzy MX3 and MX4 could be on your Top 5 fixed. Made in America 🇺🇸 too if I remember. I currently have the 100 grain G5 Montec CS on my hunting arrows. I bought Magnus Stinger Buzz 🐝 cut and Sik F4 in 100 grain at Cabela’s last year. I couldn’t find 125-150 grain Magnus after your video on them as well as RF and The Hunting Public videos. Not even on the online stores. Oh well. Lol 😆… I won some G5 broadheads a week ago and went with the M3s. I was debating on the Striker V2 of X as well. I had the original Strikers and they are razor 🪒 sharp. The target doesn’t move when you shoot fresh ones into it. I just kept losing blades when I would switch back and forth between broadheads and field points. Looking forward to the Top 3 or 5 arrow brands next.
Ramcats fly like field points and are number one in penetration. There is no reason to take chances on failures with mechanicals anymore. The G5 strikers and the montechs do on leave blood trails trust me.
Killed a pile of deer with the rocket steelheads.125s were my fave. I also had great experiences with the Sidewinder. Another "over the top" that has worked flawlessly for me was the Wasp Jak Hammers (original).
I've nothing but bad experiences helping people track deer with over the top expandables. I dont why people hate on rage so much. I've killed a ton of deer with the rage hypodermic 2blades. If you have issues killing deer with them. It's operator error on your part. I've never had one fail. Most deer either only go 35yds to 40yds an fall over in sight. Some lucky if they make 70yds to 80yd. It's very much so to each there own on opinion on what they like. Cannot beat fixed blades on penatration ill agree 100% there. They're is nothing wrong with deer hunting with a 2blade hypodermic. With the right arrow an poundage that is.
Dude the meat seekers are awesome. I’ve been shooting them for nearly a decade. Rocket is no longer owned by trophy ridge . They are there own company now after a few year hiatus . If you ever do a penetration test with mechs .... you will be shocked by the meat seeker. It’s a sleeper. Yes it has an annoying rubber band ...... the triangle hole slug hole it leaves doesn’t lie. China made, at least they were when trophy ridge owned them ...
What are your thoughts on some of the Hybrid heads being made? I recently sent Trenton a Bloodsport Gravedigger COC 125gr head to review and I'm looking forward to see that. That head in particular should be super nasty when it hits.. Great vid! and how DARE you mention Rage.. lol
I personally have never felt the appeal of hybrid heads. Some hybrids are 70-90% fixed blade it seems anyways. I'd rather just shoot a full mechanical with the crazy accuracy or a fixed with all the structural integrity.
I honestly just don't understand when I see any reviews on top mechanical broadheads and not only is the Sevr (any and all of them) not the far and away number 1 mechanical, but it doesn't even make the top 3?!? Now I have worked in an Archery pro shop the last 6 years, and of course we don't sell them, because they are only sold straight to the buyer to cut out that retail price, but I still tell any of my customers that asks what the best mechanical is, to go check out Sevr. It might get some management upset, but not mine, because they know it's the truth and the all shoot them. The only thing I can reasonably think of is that you haven't shot them before so you can't rate them. I have shot everything from my Ravin, and my compound from Schwacker and Rage to Spitfires and Grim Reapers, then I discovered Sevr and I haven't looked back. Everything from their best in class accuracy, unreal durability, locking pivoting blades that widen your wound channel, will actually move around bone and continue in a straight line on glancing bone hits then smash right thru bones that heads like the Spitfire would break, get stuck, or deflect on (seen it many times since Spitfire used to be my go to), the fact that you are paying straight from manufacturer prices, but the biggest reason by far is that in a sport dominated by your confidence, that you can practice with the same exact broadhead you plan on sticking a deer with is a game changer! It's not even close, and not worth debating, Sevr is by far the best name in the mechanical game right now! I don't work or profit from Sevr, actually just the opposite since I only sell their compitition, but I just cant believe when I see "a best of" and Sevr never comes up. Especially knowing a FAR FAR inferior head mad the list in the Spitfire! Took my deer with a bow this year at 41 yards with SEVR 2.1. Double lung, top of the heart. 1 lung was GONE! Almost completely liquefied, far lung was completely cut in half. Complete pass thru. Found my arrow, still razor sharp and ready to roll next year. Hey you guys shoot what you want, but please don't say any of them are better than the Sevr, unless you know something I don't. By all means I hope to find something even better than the Sevr. Hopefully it will drag my deer out to my truck too!
You could of just stopped at slick trick. Their fixed blades are best IMO and their mechanicals are steel and don’t bend. The blades will mind you but all mechanicals do. Swackers are aluminum and offer replacement blades but they aren’t issuable because the aluminum ferral bends. Slick trick are my choice. Every deer I’ve shot with them I watched them drop. That’s 99% my placement and not the broadhead but the broadhead held its integrity and was reliable. That’s why I like them. You can keep everything else.
american made fixed blade, check out wasp broadheads the new fixed blade that they teamed up with havalon blades are nice an cant wait to use them this year
Whats your opinion on the truglo titanium 4 blade mechs..I used them for the 1st time this past season ,and straight pass thru with a 544gr carbon express maxima red sd
So, by the logic of “…you can kill a deer with 1 1/16, why use bigger?”, shouldn’t you be hunting with a field point since you can kill a deer with it?
Oh there are a bunch of great broadheads. But at the onset of the video I clearly wanted to make this a "walk into your local shop" feel. Gold heads from Iron Will, TuffHead, Cutthroat, etc. but they're not ammass produced product.
Thank you for the shout out! I agree with your fixed head choices, especially going striker over the montec, montecs are pitifully dull. Spot on with your mechs too, although I give a nod to true blue broadheads crossbreeds in the 40ish broadheads Ive tested they tied Iron Will for the sharpest. I really miss those rocket steel heads. 7/8" cut of pure devestation. Most durable mech ever made hands down.
@@averagejackarchery I just got the sever 2.0 150gr for crossbows so hopefully they work out good for me. I've tried fixed and they fly all over. Idk if it's because it's shooting at 385fps at 475gr total weight or what but I literally have to go to 1" or less with fixed heads. Thanks for the reply

You should look into THE TOOTH OF THE ARROW broadhead....100% made in usa......Also i recommend Afflictor Broadheads K2 Mechanical
I prefer the slick tricks that were made here locally in Arkansas. Still have quite a few left.
Well I decided to go with the Bowtech Amplifi.
Ramcats fly like field points and are number one in penetration. There is no reason to take chances on failures with mechanicals anymore. The G5 strikers and the montechs do on leave blood trails trust me.
What makes a crossbow hunter lazier than any other hunter?
I expected the Shoulder injury Crossbow hunter to jump from the roof...
I gave up on mechanicals.
Simply because less moving parts means less issues.
Tune your bow to COC heads and your good to go.
Killed a pile of deer with the rocket steelheads.125s were my fave. I also had great experiences with the Sidewinder. Another "over the top" that has worked flawlessly for me was the Wasp Jak Hammers (original).
Great head.
125 Steelhead was (is) the bomb. Great head!
I need to come across the 125 originals
I was waiting for him to say Rage for #1😂. But I'm glad someone agrees with me about rage mechanicals
What’s the story on rage. Guess I been out for to long.
Have you used the sevrs yet?
You can put moose, caribou, dall sheep and even grizz on slick tricks list.
What do you think about the Sevr 1.5 I’ve never tried a mechanical but was thinking about trying this one out on mule deer
With the right arrow an poundage that is.
i watch the steel drum trials to make my decision on structural integrity.. so i use SWHACKER 125gr with 75gr brass incert..
I shoot mechanical's, and you didn't mention Swacker? I've been shooting Swackers for the last 7 years and there awsome!
Nice video. Well spoken and informative.
Mean seekers are on my radar I'll probably have one in my quiver this year.
@@deerbeerdeerbeer test one at home , make sure you are satisfied with the flight. And shoot the first for you see with it . They work very well .
Have you tried Tooth of the Arrow? Made in the USA, solid one piece steel, super tough like slick trick on steroids!
Are u still shooting the super V sight lol
Are you sure Tricks are made in America? I still have originals since before the original owner passed when I know they were made in USA.
Hard to beat the OG G5 Montec. I like to tink with others, but always find myself digging back into the bin for good old reliable Montec.
I have those. For some reason I want that magnus serrated black hornet tho
You can keep everything else.
still shooting Savora 4's till my stock of replacement blades run out !
Pro series grim reapers have killed everything I’ve shot at
american made fixed blade, check out wasp broadheads the new fixed blade that they teamed up with havalon blades are nice an cant wait to use them this year
Love the shirt!!
Whats your opinion on the truglo titanium 4 blade mechs..I used them for the 1st time this past season ,and straight pass thru with a 544gr carbon express maxima red sd
Sevr is the best hands down
So, by the logic of “…you can kill a deer with 1 1/16, why use bigger?”, shouldn’t you be hunting with a field point since you can kill a deer with it?
What's your take on SEVR?
Beefed up rage
Not my style of mechanical. I never out any stock into two blade mechanicals regardless who makes them.
Iron Will?... Sevr? Thought they'd be in your list!
Should be #1 on both lists! Grim Reaper is definitely close though!
To expensive but good heads. He has the average Jack channel, not the upper echelon channel
@@-lovefromnh grim reaper's slogan, "Watch em drop", is no lie. They always die within 60 yards if you make a good shot.
Oh there are a bunch of great broadheads. But at the onset of the video I clearly wanted to make this a "walk into your local shop" feel. Gold heads from Iron Will, TuffHead, Cutthroat, etc. but they're not ammass produced product.
@@averagejackarchery definitely understand that part. The list could go on and on. But maybe that's a whole new video?
Finally someone mentions spitfires!
Are you saying mechanicals are better for crossbows compared to compound?
I personally push mechanicals for crossbow shooters, yes.
Ramcats are my go to!
Thumbnail makes me uncomfortable but I loved the video.
What about sever broadheads,Jack ?
Rage on steroids... Doubt he cares for them
The words "expensive" and "mechanical" put together just sound like "waste of money" to me....
Aren't you losing energy with front deploying having to push the blade all the way around? 🤔
