I feel about kids the same way Sarah does! And many times get scared people might misconstrue my enthusiasm and so back out... So happy to hear I'm not the only one who loves kids that way!
I love kids, but I do not want to have any. If you had asked me ten years ago, I might have given a different answer. But today, after an exhausting battle with prescription drug addiction and mental health issues, I am almost 40 and I am tired. I don't want to spend my 40s and 50s raising kids, I want to spend them actually enjoying my life, which I haven't really been able to do since I got OCD when I was 16.
The one thing I am glad about is that my sister has kids, so my parents have grandkids. That means the pressure is off of me, thank god. And my other sister is going to have kids too.
That sounds rough, but there's nothing wrong with knowing what you want for you or what you can handle. We're all different.

I really don't get how anybody of any gender manages the child raising thing, to be honest.
You do your best while still "failing" but as long as the parenting comes with love and respect it will all be good in the end.

Hooray... I love and support all 3 of those things. But I don't like some of the vegan community being anti child. There's scientific evidence esp for a more plant based lifestyle than the earth can handle our population, we just aren't giving sustainable now

Right on, men too! We are around 40 yo and zero kids. This is also due to human over-population (poodwaddle dotcom), that 450,000 kids-teens wait to be adopted by the anti-BC people and for many other reasons. Well, we all get to pay child support tho, like "socialist" public schools k-12, but universal health care is "socialism" to some!

There are many problems with wanting to be "childfree", but the biggest one is this: Only people of certain cultures will embrace the concept of "childfree" and those cultures will diminish and disappear. This has happened before and it will happen again. An example from history is the Shakers (look them up in Wikipedia). The shakers did not have children and now they are all gone.
If you do not want two or more children and your friends do not want two or more children, then your culture is in the process of going extinct.
Words of Cheresie Whats the problem with cultures disappearing? It has happened before because of war, low birth rates or whatever and it will continue to happen in the future. Theres going to be more and more people on earth and cultures will merge or disappear, thats how it goes.
Andrea Marinela, I agree, but it does insinuate the child free # will always be a fringe minority and become more so over time. In a 100 years Mormons and similar prolific cultures and religions will be huge. The earth is doomed. So have a nice day, because the future doesn't matter that much anyways.

I actually think that question "how do you do it as a working dad," is a great question. Dads are important. Dads aren't just providers. There is evidence that having 2 parents (or more, if you include grandparents) in the home helps children grow up into happy, healthy adults. So how does a dad be present for their children while holding down a full time job? I want to know as a gay man.

It is a little sad that people dont understand why gender roles exist at all. A mother has the job because she is biologically better at it. The life that is her child has come from her own, and she has a more intimate connection with the child than the father. That does not mean that the father is incapable or the mother does not have a choice.
When a single male parent takes care of a child he has to play the role of both the father and the mother - meaning that certain aspects of parenting are feminine and other aspects are masculine. Biolobically, females have more feminine characteristics and males have masculine characteristics, making them more suited for their respective jobs. Gender roles are a real thing, and we should understand as much.
Growing up, I was much closer to my dad than my mom. I still am now. I couldn't relate to my mother very well. I looked at things from an emotional perspective, and so did she. My dad however was both emotional and logical. He was the person I would always turn to for advice and talk about life and my friends and boyfriends about. My dad was always home when we got home from school. He went to work early (at like 7 am), came home by 4:30 pm at the latest and finished his work on his computer after we had gone to bed. (we all did after school activities, so we got home around 5 pm ish) Both my parents cooked our meals. Both taught us important life lessons. I love my mom, but I was always closer to my dad. (I wasn't comfortable discussing my first period with my mom, she found I got it from my sister.)
Biologically, mothers carry babies and give birth to them. But after that, the kid can develop an emotional attachment to either or both of the parents. I do think that gender roles exist, but only because we perpetuate them. Mothers are usually more available than fathers. (Because fathers are working when their kids want to talk or need something and mothers tend to be at home.) I think that having both parents teach the child important lessons, but I also think that they only prescribe to gender roles because society expects it of them and because they were raised with those roles.

Yup. This. You nailed it. I've always related more to my father. My sister was closer to our mother. That's not to say that I wasn't close to my mother, because I was (she passed suddenly in 2005, hence the past tense but thankfully my father is very much alive)-we were very close as my parents divorced when I was 15 and I lived with her so we got quite a bit closer as the years went on and her unexpected death completely fucked my world up. With that said, when it came to general personality, interests, temperament, and general rationale- I connect(ed) with my father a bit more. Our personalities are damn near identical, so we are naturally more comfortable with each other. Our family dynamics didn't revolve around gender roles so much as just natural connections as people.
Dragoonman, it's fine for you to speak for yourself or your family, but don't you think it's a little bit ridiculous for you to make a sweeping statement about all the families in the world?
My dad was far more nurturing and emotional than my mom. My mom, sister, grandma and many of the women in our family really hated staying home with kids. It wasn't a healthy situation for them, so they worked, and were judged harshly by society for it (not my sister too much, luckily things have changed). If society would have eased up on the rigid gender roles, maybe my dad could have allowed himself to stay home and care for us, while my mom made money, cause she was better at it!
It's just fine if you like traditional gender roles, and I hope you find a partner who agrees with you, but speak for yourself. Your views don't represent humanity as a whole.
Cami - What you are talking about is the nature vs nurture argument. I claim that biologically a mother is more likely to be better at taking care of a child. This statement means that statistically she is, meaning there can be people who dont fall under this generalization, but the majority do. Also, a person's upbringing can affect their characteristics. Maybe the women in your family learnt from the other women in the family how to behave and it has stuck over a period of time.
Society is stupid Cami. It thinks recognizing gender roles is equivalent to enforcing it. As i said above, a male can be feminine and a female can be masculine. I associate feminine traits with motherhood. i am sorry that your family was judged for its decisions, and I am happy that they were able to overcome it instead of succumb to it.
