Curb Your Enthusiasm takes that premise to a somewhat more surreal height, so its a little more bearable, but Seinfeld is pitiless. Conjecture: other people find him funny because he says things that other people wish they would say in the moment when fending off attackers. The show and his routines usually has him positioned as a reasonable person getting victimized by idiots and miscreants. So, the content is that of a complaint or a victory lap. There's an old saying that goes along the lines of a comedian says funny things, and a comic says things funny. He is clearly a comic in this regard, a little like Bugs Bunny. I found it ironic when Jerry complained of the PC sensibilities of newer audiences, that he just couldn't slay by just showing up. To me, it crystallized the notion that he thinks of himself as a great man. He does have the accolades, and that's enough for many people. My own definition is more immediate: does it make me laugh in a way that doesn't pander to cliches. The best comedy is almost like philosophy in that it answers and illuminates a point that you've been led to consider. Chris Rock had that in the early 90's, and I think it led to an advancement of zeitgeist thinking about the races. Comedy doesn't have to be so heavy, but it can provide a scale to measure against, and Jerry is lacking, more times than not.

I think a main thing is they have to be not intimidated by Jerry. Some of the funniest people had bad episodes and you could tell they were terrified.
