On certain surfaces solvents etc are not always suitable! So often the best method is using sellotape - push it onto the unwanted sticky residue; pull it off. And again.. Do it as many times as necessary. Little by little all is removed.. Very satisfying!

I have also heard that if you don't get a label wet, you can put really really hot water in the container, let it sit a short while and then you can start peeling it and it generally will peel without leaving residue. I haven't really tried this yet. I have soaked in hot soapy water and had pretty good success depending on what kind of glue was used. I do like to use oil of some sort when needed but never thought to add baking soda. Will have to give that a try! :)

I am thinking it will depend on the type of adhesive, and it is impossible to know what adhesive used. I suspect the ultimate answer, is to have a series of methods (that will not damage the surface) and try one after the other.
