Bart Van Syoc here. I remember "Fort Laurel" Very well! I was born in 1947 and lived behind him and two lots to the west on Lanark. I learned to swim in his pool. He had moved out and the property was owned by a family named Brown who ran a swim school there. The place was just as one would imagine a hollywood estate to be. Allow me to describe it for you: Behind the gates was a driveway that went all the way through to the rear of the property. The wall went around the entire acre ( I ran atop of it many many times growing up). On the left side was a small 1-2 bedroom guest house with a parking area for a few cars behind it. Continuing down the left was the Entertainment building. The first room was storage for supplies. The next part of the building was a full blown western bar just like you'd see in the old westerns, complete with a large wooden carved bar and a stage with old footlights. Behind this building was another parking lot that could hold 10-20 cars. Next was a fence that separated the landscapers bulk materials from view. The right hand side of the driveway started with a flower garden that had a fish pond and walking paths and a small gazebo. Next was the main house. A three bedroom ranch style home with large french pane windows that looked out over the flower garden. Behind the main house was a large lawn where one could play such things as croque or badminton. In the outside wall were small turret like porticals where two people could sit and watch the events of the day or share a private moment out of direct view from other guests. Next was the Bar-B-Que area with a grapevine covered trellis structure over it. Next was the swimming pool complete with his and hers dressing rooms. My mother was the secretary for the swim school and I had a lot of free time running around the Fort. I moved away in my 20's, returning to the area from time to time over the next 30 years, I would stop by the Fort and see what had changed. I am sadden to say that each time the place was in worse shape. Having seen it in all its splendor, the estate was hard to look at. Jordan, it was too bad that you didn't know that just north of where you shot this video were two house on a street that dissected the estate that still have a remnant of the old walls preserved as boundary walls for each property. Check it out on Google earth. I was a truly blessed person to have been able to grow up in this area during that time.
@@Andy-Andy-Andy-Andy-Andy-Andy Hi Andy. Sorry I had to log in with my son's account This is Bart and I was using my wife's account for the posting. I went into google earth and the address is 20216 Baltar you will see the wall on the left of that house and on the right of the house to the right of that address. You will need to look back to the front edge of the houses to see the full width of the old walls. perhaps the front end of the walls were reduced to meet code for size or height. I'll admit that google earth doesn't do them justice. I was actually on the sidewalk there and spoke with the neighbor across the street from that address.
What a fantastic vlog Jordan! I never knew about this compound but I knew that he had several homes around L.A.. I loved Stanley and Oliver's comedic timing! They were awesome. Happy birthday, Jah! 🎉🎈🐾🐾🎈🪅🎈🎉
I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. How in the world do you only have 24000 subs. It breaks my heart that more people don’t care about the good ol days of Hollywood. I can understand no one caring about the modern Hollywood. It was such magic back then. You do a fantastic job with your content and you are a pleasure to watch and hear.
Hi Jordan and jah 😊I'm glad you did these videos on stan Laurel It's nice to learn more about hi I was actually born the day he died 2 23 65 Have a good day 😊👍❤
Loved it ! Thanks for taking us there I had the whole fort placed there out of my thoughts and wow it would've been huge ! I like the early eve stars too and astronomy in general it looked like Venus or Jupiter great stuff well have a great day and look forward to tomorrow's vlog .
Dude, the coolest thing Johnny Depp ever did, involved the world renowned Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London. Basically years ago when he was filming something in London, his daughter became very seriously ill, with what I can't recall. But this hospital treated her , made her well again, so to say thank you, a couple of weeks later, he went back on a surprise visit, dressed in his full Pirates of the Carribean costume and started doing his Jack Sparrow thing on the wards, and read all the children bedtime stories! He said later of that experience, the looks on those kids faces was priceless . Thought I'd share that with you bud, since I really dig your vlogs , give Jah a big wet kiss from me, Ha !
Sad that Fort Laurel was demolished, but being LA, which knows the price of everything but the value of nothing, not surprising. My cousin is a retired contractor (an Ohio transplant) who was one day contacted by Stan to come over and inspect damage brought on by a large tree limb that snapped and fell on his masonry. Stan told my cousin that brick laying was a hobby for him. Anyway, nice upload.
Pete Rose had a longtime home not too far from you Jordan - he just sold it a couple of years ago and moved to my area here in Las Vegas - it's at 13348 Chandler in Sherman Oaks if you ever get the urge to see it - big street, easy home to see, not in a gated community
+Falcon Lair yeah, funny story.. I used to go to a batting cage off the 101 and Sepulveda. A friend of mine used to take his son there on the weekends, and said occasionally Pete would just show up and sit on the benches behind the cages and watch kids hit baseballs.. he said that if he could figure out what kid belonged to which parent, he would start giving the parents tips for hitting, or ask if it was ok to give the kid some pointers..
LOL, i know those cages very well Jordan, I used to take my son there for hitting and the arcade...one evening after hitting we went inside the arcade, decided to order a pizza, sat down to relax for a few minutes...pizza is ready, my son is no where to be seen...i start walking around the arcade area and there he is standing next to Freddie Prinze Jr., watching him play one of the arcade games...never saw Pete there, but i did get his autograph at Bellagio about a year ago...you do meet the strangest people on the tour, and my son recognizes everyone from see Bob Barker standing in his driveway to Jeff Goldblum sitting in his car next to his house, to Patrick Stewart jogging in Palisades...he sees all :)
🎉🎂🎉 Happy Birthday, Lord of the 🏰 Castle, JAH.... I think posters at 100 yrs, change it!! OMG you miss Jah!!!too sweet! I know I'd miss my boys if I didn't see them every night!
I've got a UK newspaper on the wall from April 28 1937. Small item included about Stan's wife Virginia going to court to ask for their divorce to be canceled since he'd promised to treat her with kindness and affection.
Some new and interesting information here. Didn't know Stan was an "amateur mason" or that he built his own 1-foot thick-walled house with his own hands. Must have kept him busy between making 100 movies. I wonder how long it took him to build it. Hardy often visited quite often socially but played no part in writing the scripts or planning the movies. The writing teams and ideas guys had script meetings there very frequently, presumably whilst Stan was doing a bit of bricklaying or tiling the roof. After splitting with Hal Roach, Laurel and Hardy went to 20th Century Fox, not Universal (that was Abbott and Costello).
Can we settle this house-building nonsense once and for all? Stan bought an ordinary ready-built house at 10353 Glenbarr Avenue in the normal way through an agent. He hired a local construction company to build a high wall around it to protect from press photographers. When the wall was finished, loads of bricks were left over and Stan asked his all-purpose "valet" Jimmy Murphy to make a permanent barbecue out of them, in the garden. This is the only bit of "home construction" on the site and it's unlikely that Stan knew which way up a brick is laid, never mind designing and building his own large house between making feature movies.
After leaving Hal Roach the boys went to 20th Century Fox, not Universal. This was during the early yo mid 1940’s. It was a completely different atmosphere than what they had been used to and Stan Laurel said one of most unhappy time periods of their careers
The siren that you saw was an old civil defense siren from the 1950's. The siren would be tested periodically and was loud. No longer pertinent in today"s world.
Are there really 1000 oaks in Thousand Oaks? :) L&H have to be the best team ever. Laurel did a lot of shorts before meeting Hardy and was a star on his own. Many of his films were satires of popular films (Mud and Sand=Blood and Sand, etc). He actually thought it was a comedown to be teamed with Hardy at first, who was pretty much a bit player/minor player in many films. One of Roach's best ideas was teaming them.
Why these kind of things annoy me: They get micitis & are too lazy to type up a script, so they do it stream of consciousness, adlibbed, redundant & sloppy.
Its a shame that the property was saved from demolition. I suppose the value of the land exceeded the historic value of the place. That's the USA for you.
Don't make 100 years the mark for not having a poster up to remember history. Have no limitations on the pictures you have hanging on the wall for age of subject matter. Things of quality last forever.

Cherri, I've had a look on google earth for the old wall but it's not obvious where it is. Do you know the address so I can take a look? thanks!

Love those Santa Ana winds!
Before the Rams had their training facility in TO, The Cowboys were training at CLU then known as CLC mostly during the 70's.
Where did the name Jah come from?
Just wondering if you could a vlog on Robert Reed and Florence Henderson from the Brady Bunch?

+mrsbrown andhercat stan was a pretty interesting man all around.. sounds like he had a ton of energy
@ Daze - Indeed, and a ton of cement, a couple of tons of bricks, loads of doors windows and plumbing and a couple of hundred roofing tiles.

I love that comforter
Nice :)
Can you tell me the difference between a blog,, a vlog, and podcast? I really have no idea what they all mean.
Somebody, anybody when need an answer here please>
After leaving Hal Roach the boys went to 20th Century Fox, not Universal. This was during the early yo mid 1940’s. It was a completely different atmosphere than what they had been used to and Stan Laurel said one of most unhappy time periods of their careers
Wake up and live!
The siren that you saw was an old civil defense siren from the 1950's. The siren would be tested periodically and was loud. No longer pertinent in today"s world.
I remember that siren. I lived one block away in the 40-60's, the first wednesday of the month at 8:00 am was the testing time.
Interesting. I guess you weren't kidding about Stan having a "fun house".

So Stan was a big player, who woulda thunk it? It's always the quiet ones, LOL!!!
Well, lets say definitely a ladies man, but also sounded like a man who took care of people financially
He always looked a little off, I thought when young that he was.
Why these kind of things annoy me: They get micitis & are too lazy to type up a script, so they do it stream of consciousness, adlibbed, redundant & sloppy.
the Rams nerd in me is jealous ☺
Looks like Oliver Hardy's son at 13.10

Sorry very much dislike most modern day actors ! Jah my favorite celebrity 💕🤗 do you have anything on Ollie ?

No shark teeth display 4 us todae. Out 4 the count. Laurel en Hardy a space in tyme. Real deal comedy.
