  • Let's take a look at how to set up and indicate a workpiece on an EDM sinker before burning it.
In EDM applications, there's no room for error when setting up your workpiece! A little debris underneath the block or the magnet can easily skew your setup ultimately turning your work into scrap. In this episode of Learn to Burn, Steve Michon from Zero Tolerance explains the reasons why setting up your job correctly is paramount, walks us through all the steps of a setup in detail, and ultimately burns the part successfully.
Setups are everything! Take your time to do it right and utilize your machine's capabilities to the fullest!

Great Content, as always! For cleaning the probe and touching Surface, i still keep keep some Gum around. I dont know how you call it in English, that Stuff Watchmakers use to pick up lint and so on :D Oh, and if youre entering Values into the Table and use Tab to jump between fields: Double check where you put what.

I’ll always double end or as many quadrants as possible on a trode. And to negate any discrepancies with rotating the c axis I will pickup the same tool with a different offset for each rotational position when the job requires it

Do you ever get discoloration on the carbide ball after some time and it starts to refuse to make contact with the workpiece?

Depending on how accurate you have to be. My older EA12D i do 4 for 1 cavity. My newer EA12PS i like to do 3 for 1 cavity. But depending on the circumstances as few as 2. It's all subjective. It just depends on the tolerance. I work for Essentra in ARKANSAS. We make fasteners, so most of the things we make are very small with a lot of detail, so do to the scale of the parts we can't afford low resolution parts.

As someone looking to apply for an EDM operator position, is it tough to go into it without experience? If so what can I do to better my shot at getting a job working with EDM machines?

Hi, i'm designer not operating the machine have a question for design consideration, let say i want to make exact 6mm hole at workpiece, then the electrode should less than 6mm right?(maybe about 5,9mm), how to manage the offset, can EDM change the offset size without change the rougness, . I assume the more rougness , the more offset size is. Do controling the offset is only by electrode size or the EDM can do some offset change at specific rougness? Thanks.

hello sir, as answering your question,
we decided no of electrodes required based on metal stock left by cnc milling machine, according to stock left we make roughing and finishing electrodes with different spark gap.
Sir i also have a question,
Is there any relation or formula, between Spark gap of electrode and setting current ampere in edm machine as for example if we give spark gap value on electrode as 0.075 mm/ side then current value should be set on machine as 2 ampere to 3 ampere .
Can you please give any fix relation Between Spark gap value and current value so that we can achieve final size in less iteration

I worked on an older edm machine and i had tables that showed the correlation between current and spark gap. Maybe you can find something similar in your machine manual. Modern machines usually do have fixed spark generator cycles saved into the machines control. You type in the undersize of your electrode and define the surface roughness you want to achieve. The rest is done by the machine. It will even orbit to achieve the final size if the electrode undersize is too big.
