I really enjoy your videos, because you almost always are testing your common convention for how to use pedals effectively. It was great to hear that higher gain sound. I agree that it’s really fun for higher gain, especially cutting through a thick neck pickup.
If I'm not mistaken the drive knob on a Klon isn't "like" a blend, it literally is one to an extent, that's part of the design. People who keep the drive knob down low aren't actually hearing what makes the Klon special.
Couldn’t agree more. I recently started using my ryra as my mid gain sound and stack it with a KOT for more gain. Works amazingly when the gain is at 11 o’clock or higher !
I use my KTR as a drive pedal, and set the gain past 1 o'clock. That is supposed to be where the "magic diodes" are really beginning to be utilized. I then use a clean boost after the KTR to thicken things up!
The Power of Klon type pedals imo is drivy boost and especially boosting into other drive pedals. It was a moment of great discovery whe I fliped the order of my Clone and the Dane... Klon into dane is insane
I use 2 klone pedals (Tumnus and Wayhuge Conspiracy theory). 1 as a low gain pedal the second as a mid-high and high gain. Often separately, sometimes stacked. It's a great sound anyway you use it.
Thanks for this video. I have always run this pedal as an overdrive. I usually keep digging around two to 3 o’clock. And I adjust the volume to taste. It sounds so great with most amps and all guitars.
What's funny is you actually described what the gain knob does fairly well, klons have dual gang pots for gain which means turning it up both adds gain and turns down clean signal
I have the TC Electronic Zeus on my main board and I have to admit I mainly use it as a boost as I also have a BD-2 and UM-300/DS-2. Great video though. Can't wait to explore the pedal a bit more.
I like sticking a compressor with a volume knob in front of the klone and keep the klone volume at a unity setting and just let the gain and treble knobs along with the tone knob on the amp shape the tone more. It also lets the guitar's tone knobs have more function behind them. But there's some eq shaping that I really appreciate from the gain knob and it's so much fun to mess with!
@@gryphon37 Not as a substitute. He put a compressor in front, so the volume knob on the compressor is volume out. Changing the volume on the clon defeats the purpose of the compressor in front.
New to the channel but definitely becoming one of my favourites always have cool pedals and guitar playing. I would 100% watch a rig rundown... *hinthint*
That’s the diodes kicking in between 11 and 1. Regular ole non magic diodes. Yup, I started using the gain when Josh from JHS made a whole video on it years ago. These days I know people with 2 klones on a board just so they can use both its boost and it’s drive.
My signal chain: Rickenbacker 4003 bass, DR DDT strings tuned D standard, Sansamp Bass Driver DI v1, Boss Bass EQ, Klone by Tone germanium Klone, Boss Bass Driver BB-1X digital preamp into DI or amp FX loop or power amp. This produces a killer bass tone especially thru a bass cab, but also thru a PA system too.
Thank you! The klon is NOT a transparent overdrive, with my tweeds and midrange amps it sounds too honky like a tubescreamer, klons sound great into twin reverbs and scooped amps. Timmy’s and king of tones and blues breakers for tweed amps
I sold my Klon for a micro amp pairing with a super sexy black MXR 10 bands EQ. That’s all u want with edge of break for shaping your dreaming tone :) But Nice video bravo !
I play it at 11 o'clock, and with treble at 2-3 o'clock. Works great to fatten a strat bridge pup, but feels a bit of a blanket over the amp on the neck (for me)
I think your spot on with the drive knob, I "season to taste" with whichever amp its in front of but usually start at 9 o'clock position with my J rocket Archer.
I like mine from 9 o’clock to full gain but most of the time I have it at about 1:30. However my pedal is not a stock klon circuit. It’s a clone with few mods to make it more to my taste and make it more versatile. Main thing it that for my taste the original circuit removes too much low end, so mine has a bass pot that works beautiful and let me dial the bass as needed. Not going to talk about the other mods or options. The klon circuit overall sounds great and the drive is beautiful. Many people us it to boost and color something else because it makes something great to the tone but I also like it very much on it’s own.
Hard sell for me. I’m not a mid hump fan. I’ll give this a go because I’m always open to new ideas on improving tone. But i love mine with the gain off pushing my other two drive pedals. The sound is magical for me.
I actually took the Klon off the board several months ago. But when it was on the board I was not using it as a boost but rather as a push pedal as I stated above. I used it that way after watching a Cory Congelio video and really liked how it sounded. So I tried his suggested settings and it worked quite well for me.
I'm trying to build a small rig, starting with one pedal first. I like the way Klon clones, and the cheap TC Spark Booster can do boost, a little tone shaping. But also they can do drive. I have one other hardware unit I can use, a Strymon Magneto eurorack module (tape/looper+spring reverb). To use that I'd need a pedal that does the high impedance to low impedance output, and about 18db+ of clean(ish) boost. I wonder if these klon circuts could boost 18db+, with the drive down? I'm using an ES-335 copy, with P90s, so maybe something like Xotic EP booster would be better to beef up the lows, and dust on some high end sparkle.
the gain knob is AN ACTUAL mix of clean and overdrive signal (distortion really... yes!)... Before 9-10 o'clock you're actually not using the diodes at all.
Actually never seen someone use those clean boost settings. I’ve seen those settings more on TS style drives. Which makes more sense cause you a low cut and mid boost with little gain. Klon style just some better with some grit or drive. That’s my humble opinion.
It's really weird for people to take almost 30 years to remember their overdrive pedal has a drive knob.
I really enjoy your videos, because you almost always are testing your common convention for how to use pedals effectively. It was great to hear that higher gain sound. I agree that it’s really fun for higher gain, especially cutting through a thick neck pickup.

That would make a lot of sense. Thanks Jared!
That’s correct, they are called dual gang pots that blend as you turn
Couldn’t agree more. I recently started using my ryra as my mid gain sound and stack it with a KOT for more gain. Works amazingly when the gain is at 11 o’clock or higher !
Doing the same thing here but stacking it with a BD2 also set with gain at around 11 !
I use my KTR as a drive pedal, and set the gain past 1 o'clock. That is supposed to be where the "magic diodes" are really beginning to be utilized. I then use a clean boost after the KTR to thicken things up!

I've never used my klon clone as a clean boost. I have a TC Spark Mini for that. The klon sounds too good to waste as a boost IMO.
You’re driving your amp into more overdrive…..what if you’ve got it set to a high headroom clean platform?
Nice video! I’m using the Archer as a clean boost that also has a secret weapon overdrive available when needed for another flavour. Killer pedal!
I use 2 klone pedals (Tumnus and Wayhuge Conspiracy theory). 1 as a low gain pedal the second as a mid-high and high gain. Often separately, sometimes stacked. It's a great sound anyway you use it.
Correct!! It’s a good boost. But it’s a better drive pedal 😊
Yeeeeeessss
Thanks for this video. I have always run this pedal as an overdrive. I usually keep digging around two to 3 o’clock. And I adjust the volume to taste. It sounds so great with most amps and all guitars.

I always use it with maximum drive. I specifically got the Tumnus deluxe for the extra gain.
I was scrolling comments to find just this! How do you run the Tuminus with the Klon or Ryra? I want to run 2 Klons with a Tube screamer
I have the TC Electronic Zeus on my main board and I have to admit I mainly use it as a boost as I also have a BD-2 and UM-300/DS-2.
Great video though. Can't wait to explore the pedal a bit more.

What do you mean? Your using the compressors volume as a substitute for the klone's?
Why?
@@gryphon37 Not as a substitute. He put a compressor in front, so the volume knob on the compressor is volume out. Changing the volume on the clon defeats the purpose of the compressor in front.
My main tone is either a RAT or Klon at low gain settings into ODR-1 into amp. Great tones. Stacking is simply great!
Brilliant video Jackson. I now feel the need to pick up klone!
Thanks man! You need to try one ☝️

Welcome dude and thank you so much! I did a pedalboard rundown not too long ago, but if you want something more in-depth then I can do that

The diodes don't kick in until around 1-2 & it really is great sound. Joe Perry sets his to about 12:30
Joe Perry blows! Worst guitarist ever.

I stack mine with a blue breaker and use it like a distortion for leads and I just turn the volume down on my guitar if I want less distortion
i like how your facial muscles are in sync with your strums
Was it the klon? Or your exceptional guitar faces that got the tone there?
Hahahah tone is in the face
Klon face! It's a real condition!
"Gain" in a Klon circuit IS essentially a blend control.
The klon is best as a boost or low gain pedal as far as medium to high gain it’s not as good as other pedals
Thank you! The klon is NOT a transparent overdrive, with my tweeds and midrange amps it sounds too honky like a tubescreamer, klons sound great into twin reverbs and scooped amps. Timmy’s and king of tones and blues breakers for tweed amps
Gain Always 3 O’clock or higher. Use your guitar volume as your gain control

If you play in a band you need mid range
@@AP-ui7oi You don't need a Klon for that.
That’s like sitting in a car without driving it. If you want a boost, get one, but a Klon is so much more than that

Each to their own dude. Personally I love stacking a neutral drive with something like a Klon
the gain knob is AN ACTUAL mix of clean and overdrive signal (distortion really... yes!)... Before 9-10 o'clock you're actually not using the diodes at all.

That’s some drive section!
If you use it as an overdrive don't you put it after your clean boost? You probably said and I missed it
It depends. I personally like running a clean boost after all my drives for a pure volume jump
I'll use my Klon any way I fucking want.
Imagine spending $5000+ to just turn the volume up.
Lol😂seriously!!!
