    1. Most want to feel like their wins are earned, even though we all have access to the same characters

As you already know I've Stuck to my Team in Tag 2 as I'm a Character Loyalist.
    Zafina - Main/Point
    Alisa - Secondary/Anchor
Niether of them were considered Top Tier in Tekken 6 and Tag 2 .... but I did not care as I liked their Moveset Animations.
I had players Moaning about Zafina's Strength in Tekken 7 and now I have them moaning about Alisa's Strength in Tekken 8 instead.

its because its much easier to notice your character's faults and much easier to notice the other characters' strengths, like you can't really see how oppressive your character is because you're not on the receiving end, but for the opponent's character? well you can easily see their strength because you are being suppressed by them. so people just take this feeling without questioning it and they don't understand that the reason their character seems worse is simply because its harder to see your own strengths than the enemy's

I feel like individual skill & experience lead to downplaying. I play Paul and people always say how strong he is, but when I use him I feel his weaknesses. I don't spam deathfist like other Paul players so I don't have that mix up game going which makes me feel like Paul has no mix up game. I feel like a lot of his strings can be beaten or avoided with 1 option so I don't see the mix up. However, what I try to do is whenever I play against someone who is using a character that I struggle to play I try to apply whatever weakness I think the character has and see how the opponent deals with it. Like if I play Jin and feel like I can't do anything if pressured, I apply as much pressure as I can against a Jin player and see how they deal with it and I learn from them. Would also like to point out that I actually don't think Paul is weak though and honestly don't think he needs buffs.

It's something that changes from player to player. Much like you, I'm fond of Soul Calibur. Siegfried's always been my main, but I'm aware that I play him in a manner, and to those more familiar with competitive, I'm easy to counter than, let's say, a player in the Level of Kayane or yours back in your competitive days. Likewise, I jugde myself a embodiment of scrubiness in usage of Algol, whereas you would made light work with it. In current SF6, I'm aware that JP is strong, and remain using him once in a while out of attachment to this new villain in the SF Mythos, regardless of people claiming he carries me or not.

My main in T7 is Fahkumram.
He is a DLC meaning you thos characters on default very strong, to some degree OP. I addition, with those characters you have the big (informarion) advantage since players who are not willing to pay for DLC can't find a solid counterplay.
I acvept that be because I am not willing ro pay for Eddy. In most cases I lose at Tekken King rank against him.
But characters like Jin, as story hero, has the privileg of not being nerfed for the new audience.

in reality most people don’t downplay their mains, but instead rate them off of how good they are at their respective rank which is usually a low / intermediate level.
tier lists, buffs, and nerfs really only matter *most* of the time at the highest level. the easy execution of characters is what lower rank players consider as good characters. for example, you have to work way harder to learn to cheese with anti-tekken yoshi or xiaoyu and most low ranks are not specialists. in contrary spamming can opener with nina or 4 1 2 with jin at low rank is viable and cheesy at low rank

Happens with me and Johnny Cage in MK1. I’ve played at least a thousand matches with him and he’s strong, but not the best in the game. He’s really reliant on his Kameo for massive damage, despite how safe he is, it’s partially because most characters can just zone him out, which isn’t fun. There’s also the added part of learning his hype, which is hard to utilize. Admittedly, he’s arguably the easiest character to learn, but he’s got nothing when it comes to people who keep zoning him out.

I wouldn’t say anybody surrounding fighting games has a big ego at all because every single one of them back down when I suggest there be a tournament with a virtual match and a live match going on simultaneously like when we were kids and the objective is to win both of them. If you’re winning, you reach over, take the other persons controller away and attempt to submit them in real life. If you are losing, you take away the persons controller and attempt to submit them in real life. Once you gain the upper hand in the real match, you go back and win the fight on screen or at least before they can get back to their controller. if the goal is to have eyeballs on a video game tournament, that would be far more entertaining with a lot more variables.

#1 King downplayer here. While character strength shouldn't stop you from playing a character and you shouldn't care about people talking shit about your character, I've noticed that in T8 specifically, players are more bitchmade than ever and uncritical evaluations of characters may fuel this lame environment we are in. This game is the most balanced Tekken has ever been but people will not rematch you or plug because they heard your character was strong on social media. I think this is the main reason people are downplaying.
Talking shit is fine but currently you have people constantly ducking characters in ranked and casual because of character perception. People shouldn't be comfortable saying "I never rematch King" without everyone in the community calling them a b*tch loser, coward etc. The difference in strength between characters in this game is not like older games at all but people are pretending like some characters are T7 Leroy or T7 Fakumram levels of strength from the way they talk about them. That shit gets frustrating.

  • @alanmosa2849

My take is simple but I think peoples mains weaknesses stand out to them more than their characters strengths because it's what they have to deal with often when they lose. I play Hwoarang and I have to resist the mentality that he is ass because his approach in neutral is not good because its linear or to simple or that he has weak to no defensive options. Because often these are the reasons I lose and watching high level players also feeds into this when I see Edge blocking for his life and struggling to get in. In reality once I'm in, I'm in and its my game. Thats balance, I just don't like how its balanced but that doesn't make Hwoarang a weak character its something I as the player have to work around so I can do the thing and win. Thats how I've coped

As for why people downplay their main, i think it has something to do with loss aversion. It hurts more losing their rank then it would winning it, therefore it would make sense for people to be averse to losing. With that in mind, people with loss aversion hurt so bad that they have to rationalize why they lost, and they shout and point to something that takes the pain of a loss away. This i argue is where people downplay their main in order to explain away why they lost so they dont have to "git gud".

I definitely think people purposely downplay to appear more skilled without admitting that the character they are using has really good tools. I also think people do it so they can convince devs to give them free buffs even if they don’t really need them.
And when you get destroyed by a player who just may be more skilled/experienced than you I think people want to justify their losses by saying that the other person is carried or that there was no way they could’ve dealt with whatever caused them to lose to begin with.

Only character I never give crap is Bryan because he does not use gimmicks that are very obvious. Unreactable Hellsweep from any Mishima WR2 from Dragunov with his massive plus frame game plan, hell even my main Alisa has massive gimmicks but Bryan just plays straight up standard fighting game almost completely even with his counter hit archetype.
I think that is why people can get so annoyed because they feel the powerful if not stupid gimmick a character has gave them the win and they did not play "Fair Tekken" in their mind.
Sadly this will be forever a common topic brought up of people getting upset from any character and it's because every character is different and balance is not 100% equal and it never will be unless you play mirror match only.

Just go have fun with who ever you like in any fighting game regardless of being top tier or not

Im a Bryan main, and i dont think the character is weak at all. He is just difficult, but not execution tbh, combos r not that hard. Its the gameplan. Execution other then taunt is kind of overrated for me. U dont need qcf knees to hurt with combos.
But he is very strong if u can make him work. Especially 3+4,2 at the wall won me countless rounds with Bryan.

I have never down played Azucena I knew she was ridiculous and I advocated for her nerfs to an extent I agreed with most of the changes until they made her stance better then I was ok with the loss of tracking on a few of her moves but tbh I never cared if my character gets nerfed I played 2 thousand hours of Lei wulong I could care less about it until it's just pointless unjust nerfs but then again I try not to hold biased opinions and I can't wait for marduk and armor king hopefully they are season 2 it would be insane if they weren't in T8

Downplay to not get your main nerfed. Unfortunately not all is true, lot of hypocrisy between people, and the devs who listen to twitter complaints. When ppl don’t lab shit and just complain, it can kill a character.
I personally say don’t make characters too complex ffs. People wanna play and not spend too much time labbing, or going through 100 moves just for one character and 4 different stances. That shit feels like too much homework. Games are to relax, and not be too much of a chore.

I don't give NO fks about how other players see him.... SIMPLE. I've gotten to a point in my life where if I constantly continue to cry about what other players characters are doing and I don't lab the counters to said characters its a skill issue on my end point blank.

I think that its not just ego but fear. If they get their character up played then nerfs are in bound and no body likes nefrs.
ss gokus legs got crippled for like 3 years
Sean in thd strike was butchered due to lore reasons
Bayonetta was "rebalance" .... she needed it
Thr gave wolverine a new move in umvc3 to stop his mashing (needs citation).
Sentinel lost i think 300k health in a few weeks. He went down from the most health to 900k... 930k...below average
On the other hand if a charcater gets down played buffs might come
    Kurilins rocks are ridiculous now
Goku black got some cool stuff
17 and vegito who weren't bad got much better as the game went on.
Dldr: down play to get buffs up plays get nerfed, does it actually work idk

People play and like to troll/deceive in general these days. That's why. That's part of society at this point. People downplay/upplay and cap about all kindsa shit "stellar blade is what people wanna see from women in games" when the chick look like a whole weeb wet dream, "western devs can't design women" when it's plenty generally attractive women in these games, but people will pick the worst examples as a reflection of the whole thing. It's the wave to troll behind bullshit; whilst knowing better. Bringing it back to the topic, like Ken players KNOW Ken is better than say....Jamie, but they don't wanna seem carried, or admit that they don't wanna work as hard for shit. It's fun to bullshit. That's why people downplay their characters/upplay other characters.

I don't believe I'm down playing my main at all. Nina Williams is pretty much the same character she was in Tekken 7, and she was low to mid-tier at best in that game. Actually, she's been nerfed in some instances. For example, her d3,2 can no longer be used to stop people from ducking the 2nd hit of her d3,4,3 string, because it does minimal damage and doesn't launch anymore. Her magic 4 also isn't as dangerous as it used to be, her evil mist no longer guard breaks, etc. However, for unknown reasons, people are all of a sudden saying she's one of the best characters in Tekken 8. In Tekken 7 a lot of people, mostly casual players, watched TMM's STUPID videos about Nina, and they all of a sudden started saying she's the easiest character in the game to win with. Those videos were a lie. Anyway, let me not go off on a tangent. The point is, from what I can see, the same thing that happened in Tekken 7 is happening in Tekken 8. A lot of people haven't really labbed Nina that well, so when they come across a Nina player, they get hit by a lot of shit they shouldn't get hit by, or they fail to defend properly. Then all of a sudden, "Nina is S tier!" Lol. Meanwhile, there's like nothing that would actually make her S tier in comparison to characters like Paul, Bryan, Jin, Devil Jin, Jack, King, Hwoarang, etc. Those characters are legit cheap with endless plus frames, safe launchers that fall within the plus frames, guard breaks, psycho crushers that travel all the way across the screen and put them at plus frames, the ability to fly and avoid getting hit, unfair gameplay when they have you up against the wall, etc. Nina has none of that. She's still very much one of the more difficult characters to win with, IF she's going up against someone who can defend her properly. So, to me, it sounds crazy to say she's S tier.
Every time I see my opponent is Nina, I get happy. It's an easy win for me. Most Nina players play like garbage, even high ranking ones. They constantly do things like df3,2; uf4,3,4; ss4,2; slide kicks; power crushes, etc. All of those things are extremely punishable.

    Hah, couldn't be me.
I used to play Geese in Tekken 7 fam. Yes, learning that was fucking masochistic. But you know what? it was the coolest time of my life.
Now I play Yoshimitsu in 8, I tried him in 7, bro, the level of buff this character got, is off of the moon.
But the thing about Yoshi, is he's fucking broken bro. He's so busted. It's disgusting, comparing to how hard opening someone up on Geese was, I just run up and do unblockables with Yoshimitsu, which opens them up like crazy, and a hop kick launcher? Bro, it's like playing on tutorial mode after T7, I get to instant launch punish any low, It just picks up from such range, its slightly high evasive. it's a Joke mate. Lili players and any hop kick launcher character is giga carried, that move is so stupid that it drained any level of seriousness I had about the game.
Don't get me wrong, chip damage + heat, is the ultimate cheap thing about yoshi, Because he has so many stance transitions, all of his movements look smooth? so I have several ways to just knowledge check you, where even if you block, you're losing health, until I finally open you up again and you couldn't even notice losing 70% in that madness. The parry? Cracked. All of the stances? Cracked, Indian stance was kind of bad, but now I read they buffed it??? Why lmao, namco was like, yo this stance is under utilized in the tornado that Yoshi is, so buff it. Wilding.
Dunno, your title made me rant instantly, but for real, I love ranting about yoshimitsu, he's the most fun I ever had in the game, he's not as satisfying as geese, but its a different vibe, dominating on Geese felt like being a main villain, dominating on yoshimitsu feels like leading a circus, especially when my friends are watching. I should go for some more Tekken 8, but honestly? too many games to play. Just got done tuesday/wednesday with Shadow of the erdtree which was phenomenal, and in that time I missed that SMT V Vengeance came out, so it's time for that.

I respect your take, but I disagree. If you're flocking to high tiers because they are high tier, then that is a pattern I'm gonna notice and call out. It does not mean you're bad, or that you should switch characters. I just find your choices to be lacking in taste.
That said, enjoy the game in your own way, despite what I or people like me might think. Cheers!

it's important to remember that most tekken players (not all of them) are so fragile and soft.
downplaying is a defense mechanism for them to feel some validation and maybe wipe the tears from taking L's.
This is why Harada says don't ask him for 💩
