Well, when one dies, it's the end of their "own world".
I’m not gonna lie I use to be one of these right wing, prepper type people. And honestly I really feel sorry for these people! This isn’t just a hobby, this turns into a whole lifestyle that robs you from living in and enjoying the present moment.
I was radicalized through RUclips. It started off with watching sermons, then to prophecy interpretations, and because I was always really into “gear” (military surplus stuff) I got into the whole prepping lifestyle.
This whole thing is a racket that starts off preying on people’s genuine beliefs and fears and fleeces them out of all of their money! And when you look at the actual theology it’s completely inconsistent (if you’re a believer and going to be raptured before all these events take place, then why are you worried about it?)
Thank God I was also brought back to reality by RUclips as well! I would watch a lot of really heavy and emotionally/mentally taxing video. And one day a “last week tonight” video showed up in my feed and I laughed my ass off! It was a nice change from everything that I was watching.
The thing that totally changed my view on everything was the emergence of Qanon.
When he posted that Hillary Clinton was about to be arrested in October of 2017 and it didn’t happen I knew it was BS. (I never discounted anything that had a specific date right away until the date had passed) I was also so saturated in this theory and that theory, and I was going through some personal struggles too at the time that I just had to walk away from it all to catch my breath.
I became totally apolitical and honestly didn’t care what happened. My marriage was falling apart and I was distracting myself with work and other activities that kept me out of the house so I didn’t have to deal with the fact that my life was not how I envisioned it would be.
Then Covid hit and my dad died in the first wave of it in April of 2020. It through me in a tailspin that I’m only starting to pull myself out of.
I’m still a Christian although I don’t know how well I’d be welcomed into the community. And I still have family members that are completely wrapped up in all this nonsense. I wish I was able to reach them but after feeling like I’ve been dooped I have no patience for the lies anymore. I’m also seen as a traitor and that I’m destined for hell.
But I know that it is possible to come out of this worldview. To those of you who have family wrapped up in this belief I wish I could give you some pointers, but I can’t. All that I can say is that there is hope.
If you’ve read this far, thank you for listening to me and my ramblings. I guess I just wanted someone to talk to…And I hope that I was able to at least provide a bit of hope.

This is fabulous! I have an ex-husband who was losing his mind and after we divorced in 1997 he started prepping for the end of the world to be in Y2K-year 2000. He scared our teenage children so badly. He had a plan to take them out to his mother's 5 acres and live in the woods. He buried water, rice, beans, set out various motion cameras in and outside his house....he is still crazy.

This is a decidedly upper middle class phenomenon, in most cases. Hard to be a prepper if you live in an apartment with no disposable income. The prepper anxiety is very tied up with a sense of economic tension... if the social order falls you want insurance that you'll get to keep the stuff you've "won" under capitalism.
Don't forget the outcast loners of *all classes* : the disenfranchised souls with barely any real friends. Societal dystopia is their utopia, as they believe that in 'Cataclysm World' people will be forced to hang out with them to trade petrol or learn tactical knots - and in this dream world they will get their long-denied relevance and comeuppance.
Preppers now days are smart. Our economy cant stand after the trillions they printed out, they're want it to fail so they can push socialism. And maybe these millionaires in the Senate ( the VAST MAJORITY) kinda seem like they are actually only out for personal power and ability to skirt any true responsibility.
Its all a conspiracy theory because anyone that isnt drinking their koolaid of choice (Ultra conservative ideals that dont REALLY look like freedom or Liberal inclusivity that really IS about only making it better for the people that will for sure vote for them) you should be able to see this strategy of divide and conquer by racial and class divides. Any world in which these people re-emerge after a cataclysmic event would be unlike anything a human in the year 2021 would be prepared to live in, and few except the hardest would be able to accommodate. The trappings of a McMansion bunker will be the last vestige of a world long gone.

My prep is simply self reliance, I learn science and learn wilderness camp techniques, scrap technology and flora. Nothing too crazy, if there's no surface then there's gonna be no life anyway.

Prepping is not necessarily bad... my parents and grandparents were raised in the depression era... we lived on a few acres with a huge garden, apple trees, pear trees, cherry trees, etc. My father even hunted and fished. I was very fortunate to grow up in a very stable middle class life, but with the foundation of that mindset of when your kids are hungry, you need to do whatever you need to do to feed them, save for a rainy day, etc. The greatest benefit of this mindset is that I was raised eating good food and passing on the importance of healthy eating to the next generation.

Yes, totally! I have enough preps to last my family of 4 about 6 months without going to the store, but not a nuclear bunker under my house! A line has to be drawn somewhere.
The societal shift to 'fear your neighbor, reliance for self' has been toxic. Prosperity gospel evangelists go against the word of the very God they claim to be in service to. I am no longer Christian, but I still firmly believe in God and the greatest commandment 'love one another as I have loved you.' or the secular 'love your neighbor as yourself.' Anyone claiming to serve God who is teaching otherwise is not serving God. When preparing for the future, encourage this as a community. If you have your community's back, they will have yours.

on the other hand, returning to a pre-gasoline civilization pretty much is a collapse, esp since we depend on the high productivity that cheap fuel and power delivers in order to keep things moving.
an interesting example of how this can play out would be the bronze age collapse. It was a civilization that depended on particular materials, trade routes, productivity, and education levels to operate. When it fell below a certain level in any of them it could no longer support any of them and the whole thing came tumbling down.
His is probably the most realistic of the outcomes considered. The world is so incredibly petro-dependent and complex, that the collapse of that system will basically cause famine and desperation. But shooting all of his neighbors isn’t the best solution, even though a lot of these psychos think it is. If you can grow enough food for yourselves and your community, you’ll probably be insulated from the devastation.

@@Juuk-D while it is true that there is a potential transition path, if we lost gasoline over, say, a 10 year period, it would probably not be fast enough. neither are anywhere NEAR being able to replace fossil fuels across the all domains. We don't even know if either CAN be good replacements yet, both technologies have serious limitations that engineers and scientists assume they can solve, but it is not a guarantee.
just because alternative technologies exist does not mean it can scale quickly enough to offset the loss, and with modern logistics and economies the way they are, that could indeed be catastrophic.
Again, going back to the bronze age collapse, they mostly lost, well, bronze... and that was not even a total loss but just a difference in amount available. They could still make tools and weapons out of other materials, but the loss of productivity meant they could not support the population and structure they had.

Take oil away, and you take both of them away too.

I don't think this video is as dismissive of prepping as every prepped responding to it thinks it is. Being prepared is good, but it should come from a place of logical thinking, not as some middle finger to the government, not to fulfill some political or religious mythology. Canadian prepper may be a good guy creating content with mostly good intentions (and I enjoy his channel), but you can't argue his audience is comprised of people who believe that progressive forces are trying to implement some sort of communist nightmare on to society. And that is what this video is commenting on, the cycle of fear that sells all these products, and how the commercial nature affects society. To the preppers, just do you, why are you so offended at this sort of video?

Prepping for bad scenarios is not such a ridiculous ideas. After my family lost power for 2 weeks from a hurricane we bought a generator and started keeping general long term supplies and it has come in handy many times
