One of the things I love most about Fuzz pedals is how great they sound when you dial back the guitar volume knob. You get a full range of variably tamed goodness to take advantage of as you dial up to the fuzz tones they're more famous for.
Being a Fuzz lover back when there was nothing but hate, I still need to point out that there are some unique and brutal Drives out there, including some Germanium types.Don't let the names distract you. I consider the Muff to be more of a Distortion.
The Supreme pedal is based on the 60's Japanese Superfuzz. After Pete Townsend was first exposed to Jimi Hendrix, he went through a period when he changed to lighter strings and used a Superfuzz, usually with a Gibson SG. The well-known example of that sound is the famous album The Who Live at Leeds.
I think this is the best demo of these pedals because they test them against single coil v humbucker and a clean v dirty amp which makes such a huge difference for fuzz pedals. Thanks guys.
The Fuzz Supreme is based on The Fuzz Pedal which Pete Townshend used in the 1970's (primarily in the Tommy and Who's Next era), and you can hear that pedal listening to the Live at Leeds album!
Really surprised that a gentleman and scholar such as the Captain is hearing of the Superfuzz only now, at the ripe age of 31.. :D Probably my favorite guitar sound in the whole world. The essence of rock and roll distilled.
To me Historically, the sound we were going for in the 70's was the Bender. The idea of sending an already Fuzzy/distorted sound into an already distorted sounding overdriven, amp/friedman was something we just did not do except in a rare situation/experiment. the Beatles and Stones, yardbirds used it for that B uzzsawy sound. Alot of the Live stuff that Hendrix and the Who did back then was simply 100 watt amps. Cranked to all get out. Pete today with hearing has paid the price for it, and would probably tell you so. If someone asked me, what is the sound of an electric guitar, I always send them to the opening lead sound of Paul Revere and the Raiders the song Him or Me, that opening single coil electric clean, most likely small amp, fairly cranked is the Electric sounding guitar. Then of course you get into the Clapton Beano sound. High High Gain stuff came about much Later, think late 80's-90's, that is all a matter of taste, myself I do not like lots of Gain, maybe I am too old to relish it. Well my old 2 cents worth. The Crimson they demoed seemed to have the most versatility. There actually are 3 types of pedal: 1st came the Fuzz, then Distortion and then an Overdrive pedal, and a treble booster pedal seems to do that too, in that type pedal. They all seem to bleed into each other to some degree. And then along came Phase shifters/Flangers/chorus, and Delays. Reverbs tremelos/vibratos built into mid to late 60' amps. Oh and right after the Fuzz came the Wah, Wah pedal. You can tell when certain effects came available in recording history, Wah pedal Cream and Hendrix, Stones only rock and roll album had the birth of Phase shifter, Van Halen 1st albums Flanger effects. You especially hear the birth of Chorus effects in Robert Plants 1st Solo album. I believe Tape delays would have been mid 60's. A Good Electric player plays the Amp as much as he does the Guitar itself, alot of it feeds out his fingers/touch as well. Well only giving personal opinion.
Generally speaking, I’m just not a fan of fuzz. That said, the Supreme is incredible. I even loved that scooped mode for how it so dramatically changed note definition. Best fuzz demo ever.
Boost on low gain, scoop on high gain. That's how I felt about it. But I mean there is a reason so many doom metal artists revere the Boss FZ-2, which is based off of the Super Fuzz.
@@mistergoat7357 The "not a fan of fuzz" of me three years ago now has an Octavix and a Deluxe Big Muff on the board. My, how times have changed … as have I. :)
I have the Bender and running through a Tweed Deluxe, it's really easy to get those old Neil Young tones where it sounds like the amp is about to explode. I love it.
For an example of Pete Townshend using Superfuzz listen to his solo on Heaven and Hell live at Leeds 1970, it's definitely not as gainey as the JHS version, but it sounds like he used it more as a boost to push his already gainey amp
Looking forward to getting the Bender for christmas. I have the Crimson. It's great, but personally as far as the Big Muff goes, I prefer the typical New York Big Muff. The JHS Crimson has more mids, doesn't clean up quite as nice and it's a bit more messy sounding. Still sounds good. It's just preference.
I think I am a Bender fan. The Smiley was nice as well. I have Big Muff pedal already. The Supreme was to over the top for me. Looks like I am gonna buy another pedal real soon. Thanks for the video guys! Be well. Cheers!

Marty Robins was recording Don’t Worry when a tube on the amp was faulty and made the first fuzz sound they liked it so they kept on playing and the recording was this was in 1961😜
I just listened to it-terrible song. Cool fuzz though! It is credited as being from 1958 on iTunes but they don’t seem to ever check their facts too well. They have a picture of Andre 3000 instead of Hendrix when you search Jimi Hendrix....
Nice vid! I love Fuzz! Any plans on checking out the Fender Player Duo-Sonic HS? I'm thinking of getting one and am curious of what you guys would feel about it. Just an idea now that you've had so many vids with off-set guitars recently.
Some say Rocket 88 was, a decade before. Both of these were tube malfunctions, I think Marty robins song’s fuzz was from the desk, Jackie Brenston/Ike Turner’s song was a tube in the amp. But meh, not sure about sweating the small details. I guess the Marty robins one is more interesting cos the engineer decided to build the first fuzz circuit after that session, whereas Ike and Jackie started Rock’n’Roll (with sister Rosetta Tharpe) instead.
I just sent an order for the pink CV jazzmaster a few hours ago, and now there's one sneaking around in the back of the video here... Coincidence? I THINK NOT
on the FF style one like a lot of FF style pedals the high end comes in right at the end of the fuzz control i don't think the pedal is dark if you listen to it with the fuzz all the way up 6:20 the way it should be for me.
I'm a bit confused whether the Supreme is supposed to be a Shin-Ei/Companion Fuzz. It does sound like it, but I'm sure I read somewhere it was supposed to be something else.

Felt like I was in Fuzz 101. One of the best videos ever! The natural breaks between guitar/amp/pedals was fabulous. JHS is way out front on these.
