Things are sure different today than they used to be. In the 80s and 90s you used to have to drop the fuel tank to remove and replace the fuel pump. Nowadays most cars seem to be like this one where you can just remove bottom of the back seat and a screw-on plate and access the pump, while the tank remains in place. Thanks for posting this 😊
Thanks for your help. Used this as a guide last night and it worked great. Couldn't get the aftermarket fuel pump to seat as firmly as I wanted to in the tank; but then again I didn't use an OEM fuel pump.
Just took the top off mine and freaked when I saw wires sitting in gas. But, thanks to your video, I feel much better. And thanks for the info on how to get the pump out.
As helpful as some might have found this video, rule #1 is DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!! You are very fortunate to be still with us :) Good luck in the future!
+Adrian Mechner ....if you cared so much to correct someone that may have helped you, then you should have cared enough to respond to someone else and correct your half truth the respectful way! your bloated ego is apparent! DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE PULLING THE PUMP BUT NOT DURING DIAGNOSIS!
+Brandon L I'm surprised you didn't say anything about holding a lamp above a full tank of gasoline. Even if it's a CCFL tube (relatively low temps) a variation of the inverter frequency could have produced some micro-sparks igniting the vapors... - I would have felt safer with a low voltage LED lamp... though it would have been even better to just drain the tank before working on it...
Dave Thanks so much for this video. My fuel pump just failed on the Audi A4, exactly as you covered. But I have one question. I want the PROBE you were using. I only can find dumb light probes. Yours is sophisticated. Please tell us what it is and where you found it. Thanks, Kim
Great vid I used this because there was diesel in the petrol and had to drain the tank. I was quoted £200 for the job but with your help did it in 45 mins. Cheers.
I have a 2003 vw Passat W8. It appears to have 2 fuel pumps, one on each side of the back seat. There are 2 access panels. Wish I could upload a picture. Had a 2004 Jetta. Fuel pump on it was in the middle of the seat.
Thanks Dave !! I have removed my first fuel pump now, I couldn't say that untilI watched and followed the steps in ur very helpful video. Thanks for sharing gr8 work!
good video. I am going to tackle my son's 2004 vw golf. It stopped starting while I was out of state and I removed access panel hit top of pump several times and then it cranked. I drove it home praying the whole time and I made it. Whew!!! So pricing the pumps now and they're expensive. I was wondering is it possible to rebuild one of these new styled pumps? As the manufacturers have changed them from the older styles which were rebuildable.
Great video but did you disconnect the battery. The last time I disconnected the battery I lost my TP and needed a VAG to reset. Also is it safe to bang the area with a screwdriver and not cause spark.
Can you describe the "Normal" sound that these fuel pumps are supposed to make. Thanks, Bill with a dead fuel pump, no sound even with 12v directly connected.
Nice thanks for the info. I just did a diag where I took the fuel rail fuel hose and no fuel was pumping out when key on or when crank. I haven't checked the relay. I'll check that out if it clicks then I sure the pump is bad
Great video. I was wondering, can a bad fuel relay result in that it sometimes start, sometimes is hard to start and sometimes don't start at all? Now my 2001-Passat starts sometimes, and sometimes not... I'm not sure where to start diagnose, but if it is only the fuel relay, it would be great.
My pump does work, it does turn on. When ohm tested, I am getting a resistance of 3.7 ohms (not between 1-3). Should it still be replaced? Or is this okay? Since it works and the ohm reading is above 3, I’m not sure.
what i had fun with was diagnostic compared to what people were saying. i had 3v at the connector going to the fuel pump. replaced the relay and i still have 3v. replaced the pump and the car ran great. weird! also there is a "V" notch on the pump and two marks on the pump cradle in the tank that needed to be lined up to make the pump secure. my gloves kept melting off in the gas trying to figure it out. words for the unwise: DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE PULLING THE PUMP BUT NOT DURING DIAGNOSIS!
Have a 2004 Passat GLS. Took off the cover and unscrewed the black open ended cap. The fuel pump does not look like the one in the picture. No hose connectors coming out. Only 2 plug electric. Looks like it could be the fuel gauge.
Thanks so much, it means so much to me. I'm pennyless at the time so I need to fix it myself, since I have tons of experience working with flammable liquids and gas I can afford doing it myself. Let me share a simple advice through your channel though: If you can, please empty the tank USING A SUITABLE FOR FUEL, MANUAL PUMP before starting the procedure; Vapors are really explosive and testing live circuits in a fume-dense environment could result to an explosion. Fumes also are bad for the health; prolonged exposure can damage mucus tissues and neural system. Take good care of yourselves, everyone! Thanks again, thank you so much!
Hey, I got an 2005 passat vw and my car stopped with no reason.. but it started again and didnt stop for 2 days.. I wonder that if my fuel pump is bad it will not start again right ?
@@davesgarage512 That's the cost of the pump, right? 800 dollars seems about right for the job if taken to a repair shop or dealership, accounting for about 3 hrs of labor to scan for fault codes, test the electrical components, remove old pump and install new. I could be wrong.

My only issue was when I installed the new pump. I screwed it back in; well technically it "bayonetts" back in, and it was certainly looser than the original pump. I'm sure that the pump will not move out of position, but may rattle slightly. Maybe that's what you need the special vw tool for. Anybody else have that problem?

Anyone have a picture of where the cords are supposed to plug back in. Should have taken a picture before disconnecting there is and orange and black plug in the goes underneath the top part of it not sure which one go s where... HELP please
Can anyone tell me the trick to removing the black plug of the wire harness of the car that connects to the white plug on the lid of the pump?? I know it should be simple and I look stupid for asking this question, but for the frikin life of me I can not get mine to disconnect! I just broke the small black tab at the top off and afraid I will break something else w/o knowing how this thing should come off. I tried pressing down on the black tab and pull but i had to press so hard it broke then still won't frikin budge! I do not see anything to press in to release but I know it has be there! Please let me know asap if anyone can help me here. Thx!
Don't worry about it. I busted mine up removing it and it goes back on snugly. I tacked it with a high heat hot glue gun to make sure it doesn't ever loosen unless I peel away the hot glue.

Literally only reason we would watch this is for the part you cut out. Nice job
For those wondering, the fuel pump is:
~$300 OEM from a retail location
~$150 + shipping OEM new from ebay
~$100 + shipping OEM used from ebay
Pump is 38 dollars on Amazon fuel pump module
James Brown 75 German auto wrecking
Mine was 180 bucks from O'Reilly's. Just got it tonight.
Thanks, Dave, for this video. Helps me to figure out if I have a fuel pump related issue when I try to start my Passat.

My question to you. How can I diagnose a issue without the battery hooked up?

You would have known the answer if you would have had such.

Yes I have one available, where are you located?
excuse me, hi!!, do you know if the relay for the fuel pump is the same one just with an other number?
Anyone know if the fuel return hose is connected to anything inside the tank or on the fuel pump house? My return hose line broke off.
So how much was the pump for the Passat?
Nice one, so educative!1
Where would a fuel pump for a 2004 VW Passat GL wagon be located. I'm looking to buy the Car off from a friend that has no interest in the Car.
